Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

it's a fair bet

I'm sure there'll be some good-natured antisemitism in the game to make up for it

The genre depicts a tension between the apparently still and bland social surface in Scandinavia and the murder, misogyny, rape, and racism it depicts as lying underneath.

Cheds Baker (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 September 2017 07:43 (six years ago) link

seriously, how fuckin' hard is it to not say racist things?

Cyndi Larper (stevie), Monday, 11 September 2017 08:09 (six years ago) link

i imagine it's a good deal more difficult if you're, y'know, a massive racist

oh ok, never mind then

The world's highest-paid YouTube star, PewDiePie, has used the "n-word" during an online broadcast.

The 27-year-old Swede - real name Felix Kjellberg - could be heard using the racial slur while he was playing a video game during a live streaming.

After using the term he appeared to recognise his error, saying: "I don't mean that in a bad way."

The threads on reddit are enlightening/horrifying. My favourite apologetic is 'you could say the same thing about f(gayslur) and no one complains about that'.

The immense fame of these vlogger never ceases to amaze me.

Jeff, Monday, 11 September 2017 13:12 (six years ago) link

I have never seen or heard anything this dude's done until I watched some "adults react to PewDiePie" compilation and... yeah, this guy is horrible.

I mean, the main appeal seems to be "this guy sounds like a really dumb south park character" combined with "wow I'm a teen and he's saying all this shit my mom told me is bad, how edgy"

like if you think swearing and making screaming noises or running around in a game saying how "I rape this! I rape that!" is entertaining, I'm sure he's the fuckin' nobel prize winner of game streamers

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 14:36 (six years ago) link

lmao "but I wish it did"

frogbs, Monday, 11 September 2017 14:41 (six years ago) link

I'm sure he's the fuckin' nobel prize winner of game streamers

more like the lottery winner of game streamers rly in that he's a millionaire despite having (afaict) very little going on to differentiate him from innumerable other screaming youtube tools

if there's anything we can learn from twitch it's that being a public asshole is the easiest way to reach the gaming demographic

ciderpress, Monday, 11 September 2017 14:51 (six years ago) link

pretty much all the top gaming streams are either the few most skilled players at whichever game, or loud rude dudes

ciderpress, Monday, 11 September 2017 14:53 (six years ago) link

this guy sounds like a really dumb south park character

Well...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rehash_(South_Park)

Eallach mhór an duine leisg (dowd), Monday, 11 September 2017 14:55 (six years ago) link

you know, there were moments in there I was ok with at the time, but I'm pretty good with deleting the entire run of south park from history

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 14:57 (six years ago) link

kinda hard not to see south park as playing some role in the 4channing of culture, yeah

here's how **takes sip of duck urine** economics works (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link

there's been plenty of thinkpieces tying shitty gamer attitudes to kids growing up watching South Park. it's fairly otm I think

10 year-olds just don't understand that Cartman's supposed to be the bad guy

Cheds Baker (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:17 (six years ago) link

more of a problem that 30 year-olds just don't understand that Cartman's supposed to be the bad guy, i think

here's how **takes sip of duck urine** economics works (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:25 (six years ago) link

reminds me of a conversation I had with my mom not long ago

"I didn't even let you kids watch South Park!"
"Mom, South Park didn't come out until I was in my last year of high school. You didn't let us watch The Simpsons for the first few years it was on"
"Did I let you watch South Park?"
"It was on Comedy Central and you didn't have cable television until I moved out, so I guess not"

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 15:25 (six years ago) link

oh, all of it, tho I don't really buy in to moral panics about any particular cultural form's negative impact on the youths

Cheds Baker (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:26 (six years ago) link

I think there are other social and parenting processes that shd prepare your children to recognize a bigoted sociopath when they see one

Cheds Baker (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:27 (six years ago) link

I don't think there are strong reasons to stop kids from watching a lot of things, but this whole "ehh just let kids watch whatever and don't put it in context" thing has to be something

but yeah, 30 year olds don't get Cartman is bad either, so they're not going to impart great things to their children

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 15:28 (six years ago) link

NV otm, it's not what they watch, it's who they watch it with

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 15:29 (six years ago) link

I think one reason it might not be straightforward for everyone to grok that cartman is bad is because he almost never suffers any consequences on the show. On top of being hateful and entitled, he's also a murderer, a cheat, a liar and a thief and he's been getting away with all of it for decades.

That has actually blown my mind.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 11 September 2017 15:53 (six years ago) link

I was being partly ironic Tom, I don't think Parker & Stone see him as the "bad guy" so much as a handy conduit for jokes they'd otherwise struggle to get away with

Cheds Baker (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:54 (six years ago) link

they can't do real humor about politics, just dumb jokes and shlock

never forget the mind-numbing mediocrity of "that's my bush"

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

that show was hilarious, mostly because there was like no political humor whatsoever

frogbs, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

all last season he was performatively woke, not sure if it was ironic or not, whether it had a point or not

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 11 September 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

that's my bush ruled but because it was more about parodying sitcoms than politics

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 11 September 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

hey we've found the two viewers

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:04 (six years ago) link

I dunno if I'd blame the behavior of the characters so much as the general attitude of maintaining ironic distance from everything because actually caring about things means you're intellectually compromised

ciderpress, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

^^^

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Monday, 11 September 2017 16:18 (six years ago) link

yeah, the ongoing "all things are bad or worthy of mocking, maybe some a little more than other, but take nothing seriously" strays from the "we're equal opportunity mockers of things" after a certain point

like, great, you can mock anything and everything, good for you

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link

it is up to the creators to decide what goes into a work. it will be interesting to see what they do w the new game. they need to make some points in favor of progressivism.

last game featured lots of actual Nazi speeches sampled for the bad guys. at one point you are hearing this stuff for hours while in rpg random battles. millions of kids hearing this stuff is not a good idea. kind of amazed they got away with that tbh. if that game came out post-Trump it would be a different story.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 11 September 2017 16:34 (six years ago) link

ironic distance leads to ironic racism leads to actual racism (which ironic racism is anyway)

nomar, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:34 (six years ago) link

even if they claim to mock everything equally, that sort of apathetic libertarian 'ideology' is always going to align more closely with the right than the left because the left pushes for more change and change requires caring and caring is uncool

ciderpress, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

I was typing out more words about it, but yes, ironic racism is completely indistinguishable from racism as a third party, even if you're "joking" with your friend and using slurs against them and they're a member of that group. If you do that all the time, you'll end up meeting someone new and immediately associating all the bullshit you think is fun to scream at your friends with them.

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 16:49 (six years ago) link

the massive success of cards against humanity is another bit of proof that many people are perfectly comfortable being openly racist as long as they can't be held accountable
