I live in montreal xxxp
Maybe Breaking Bad just didn't have the same impact here as it did in the states, I dunno. Game of Thrones is about as popular as I've ever seen any television show get.

I always thought fictional geography and especially place names is one of the things that Game of Thrones particularly excels at.

It's a big wonky L shape that to me doesn't feel like anything but conveniently supplementary to the characters and their dichotomy. Too easy to draw in excel! There's plenty of more organic map shapes from other fantasy stories or games etc. GoT one just seems lazy to me. I'm a dork about maps and settings.

Beautiful KM! Looking forward to the story about the 7 unique characters that are all journeying to Centeros to claim the throne!

The GoT world map kind of reminds of medieval-era world maps where some places are pretty detailed while other more far away places are a combination of approximations and guesswork which results in big blocky continents. Something like this:

There must be some dumb 'where in Game of Thrones world would you like to be from?' quiz out there. I'd probably go with Tarth - warm yet detached. Or Dorne because it has a place called Planky Town.

That's the only reason I can explain (anecdotally) seeing Breaking Bad related t-shirts and merch and stuff around but nothing GoT related (yet).
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, September 6, 2017 12:23 PM (yesterday)
GoT merch and stuff is all over etsy, like you can probably find a t-shirt that says in GoT font, "Mother of" just about every dog breed you can think of. zulily.com had a themed shop of women's fashion that was inspired by GoT ... granted, I don't personally see anyone wearing it, but I also don't see pro-Trump signs/merch where I live either.
― sansa riff (sarahell), Thursday, 7 September 2017 09:42 (six years ago) link
Obviously I know the stuff *exists*. Everything exists on the internet. Just like you, I've not seen anyone wearing it, but unlike Donald Trump, Game of Thrones is not a regional phenomenon. You'd think something of that level of popularity and cultural prominence would be a bit more visible outside of HBO promos.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 September 2017 11:48 (six years ago) link
Definitely see more BB t-shirts than GoT, but more people have GoT action figures, bobble-heads, board games etc. I think it's the types of merch the shows' different genres lend themselves too more than anything. I'd say GoT is more popular overall - BB feels like more of a cult, albeit a very large one.
― chap, Thursday, 7 September 2017 12:13 (six years ago) link
It's because BB is cool and people could feasibly pull off a Los Pollos Hermanos t-shirt or whatever whereas wearing a GoT t-shirt immediately makes you look like a massive nerd.
No question that GoT is the bigger international phenomenon.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 7 September 2017 12:33 (six years ago) link
We weren't able to make our annual pilgrimage to the local Renaissance Fair this year, but when we went last year I was surprised at how little Game of Thrones stuff I saw. Or at least, how little explicitly Game of Thrones-y stuff I saw. (Most of the stuff is implicitly Game of Thrones-y.) But yeah, I didn't even think of action figures and bobbleheads and the things people collect. I'm sure that stuff proliferates, but more privately.

I thought it would be like Marvel t-shirts, pretty much anyone will wear them unless they really don't like the stuff.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:17 (six years ago) link
I think Marvel/comic book shirts have (frighteningly?) shifted over to simply being in fashion. Like, Captain America shields, like the Superman S? Just icons that people like on shirts, like an alligator or polo player or something. I'm not sure what kind of GoT shirt people could rock that wouldn't look like some tacky white camo with howling wolf against a snow capped mountain shirt.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:31 (six years ago) link
The sigils would make good t-shirts especially House Onion.
― nashwan, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:34 (six years ago) link
Marvel t-shirts I see ordinary people wearing most are the ones with 60s-70s-80s art.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:44 (six years ago) link
people who wear Los Pollos Hermanos shirts probably have a lot of crossover w/people who are into The Chive.

yeah also ppl feel like nerds in GoT clothes whereas BB has this kind of ~badass~ quotient but i don't think this is any measure of relative popularity, game of thrones is way way bigger

From BMC Injury Epidemiology: Death is certain, the time is not: mortality and survival in Game of Thrones
Of the 330 characters that were included, 186 (56.4%) had died by the end of the study period. All but 2 deaths were due to injury, burns, or poisoning, with the majority being caused by assault (63.0%) or operations of war (24.4%). The survival time ranged from 11 s to 57 h and 15 min, with the median survival time estimated to be 28 h and 48 min. The probability of surviving at least 1 h in the show was 0.86 (95% CI 0.82 to 0.89). The analyses revealed worse survival for characters who were male (P < 0.001), lowborn (P < 0.001), had not switched allegiance during the show (P < 0.001), and who featured more prominently in the show (P < 0.001). After adjusting for other factors, whether or not a character had switched allegiance during the show and how prominently a character featured in the show were revealed to be independent predictors of death. The mortality risk is high among characters in Game of Thrones. The probability of dying within the first hour after first appearing on screen was about 14%. By the end of the seventh season, more than half of the important characters had died, with violent deaths being the most common by far. The probability of survival was worse for characters who were male or lowborn, who had not switched allegiance during the show, and who featured more prominently. There is great potential for preventing violent deaths in the world of Game of Thrones.

whenever I think about this show now I get "game of thrones" stuck in my head to the tune of the theme song from that movie "Scavenger Hunt" that is "play to win"
― sarahell, Friday, 14 December 2018 19:58 (five years ago) link
and then the image of various GoT characters in small groups trying to collect items on the list, but I have a very hazy memory of the movie and all I remember is Dom Deluise, and a neurotic woman in a french maid costume and something about a toilet ... so now my expectations of the final 6 episodes are kinda like that
― sarahell, Friday, 14 December 2018 19:59 (five years ago) link
GoT is one of the only fantasy epics that doesn't seem to involve a scavenger hunt for rings or Horcruxes or whatever

Game of Thrones is forever associated with "Game of Love" by Daft Punk since around the time I started watching Game of Thrones I also listened to Random Access Memories a lot.
