played a game called the shrouded isle. resource allocation game in the guise of managing a human sacrifice cult. not a ton to it but nicely done and was good fun figuring it out. would recommend if it pops up in a sale or bundle, or if c. 3 hours of game for $10 is not too off putting.

help me out, ilx. desperate for a new good game, but nothing on the horizon appeals.
likes: STALKER, splinter cell (esp latest ones), dishonoreds, mgs5, that deus ex one, gta vc & sa, dayz, samorost, inside, firewatch. well-written sneaky-about stuff basically.
dislikes: cutscenes.
is there anything recent (past 4 or 5 years) i should try out? get even's shooting system is too unwieldy and unfun, gta5's script is dismal & early missions zero enjoyment. worth persisting with deus ex mankind divided or trying out witcher 3? at the moment im thinking of finishing off mgs5 but it all became some unholy samey grind once i got to the second island. failing that, back to my first love: sensible soccer 96-97.

witcher 3 100%. check out prey and horizon zero dawn too.

thanks mordy, had witcher 3 installed a while and never got round to it but heard tons of good reports. not heard of HZD before but it's on the list for when i get round to buying a ps4. prey sounds perfect, can't believe i hadn't heard of it yet - thanks again!

i guess we don't really have a thread for anticipating games? anyhow, this is the new game from the FTL ppl, it looks fun, hopefully it will be: http://subsetgames.com/itb.html
and i am also looking forward to frozen synapse 2 http://store.steampowered.com/app/445020/Frozen_Synapse_2/

Yeah, I'm keen on Into The Breach - it's been sat on my Steam Wishlist since last Feb when it was announced, with their infuriating "When it's ready" release date. Excited it now has a release date, and that it's released on my birthday!
― CraigG, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 16:33 (six years ago) link
xposti would very much look forward to both of those.
there are so many games right now. it is overwhelming. especially considering that while there are lots of excellent shorter games, there are also more and more games that you could conceivably devote years to without getting bored (Europa Universalis, for example).

Found FTL too frustrating too quickly, hopefully ITB won't be as brutal

Woo Killer7 getting ported to PCs! One of the "best" gaming experiences ever for me. Some hearty lols from the comments pointing out this is using GameCube emulator footage....

my steam library just got too overwhelming so i had to organize it into genres. not sure if this'll interest anyone who isn't me but here are the categories i drew up and was mostly able to sort everything. since you can tag games with multiple categories i was able to sort stuff by producers that i like as well as genres, themes and some other notable sorting areas. by the end there were some redundancies that i will probably eventually sort out:
4x, action, adventure, bejeweled-esque, board game, card games, city builder, cyberpunk, double fine, dystopian, fallen london tree, fighter, first-person shooter, horror, interactive fiction, literary, lovecraftian, mcmillen, metroidvania, multiplayer, music, open world, paradox, platformer, political, puzzle, racing, roguelike, rpg, rts, science fiction, shoot 'em up, shooter, simulator, space, sports, steampunk, subset games, supergiant, survival, telltale, total war, tower defense, turn based strategy, unity engine, war game, zombies

Thimbleweed Park is the free game on Epic this month. Yes please.
Next month is Slime Rancher, which I've definitely also had my eye on.

forza horizon 4 definitely worth playing for a month on the cheap if nothing else

actually looking at the full list that's quite strong, lots of ciderpress-approved games on there

yeah i mean i've already played a lot of the good games on there and the rest are ones i'd rather have on switch so it's not for me but it's not a ripoff for the price is what i'm getting at

I thought this "Netflix of gaming" thing was what Stadia was going to be, their $10 sub for what, 4k streaming + Destiny 2? seems very lightweight in comparison
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 9 June 2019 18:15 (four years ago) link
google had like 20-30 games in their launch lineup but it wasn't deep on good indie titles like this
― ciderpress, Sunday, 9 June 2019 18:41 (four years ago) link
yeh but those games were not part of the sub, apart from D2 you have to buy them to play them
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 9 June 2019 18:46 (four years ago) link
oh i thought some of the games were included in the google sub. if the sub is just in place of having to own a pc or console rather than giving you the games then i can't imagine anyone already in the gaming ecosystem choosing google over microsoft for this sort of thing
― ciderpress, Sunday, 9 June 2019 18:55 (four years ago) link
yeh they are doing different things, but I can't see many people choosing stadia in the short term. then again I'm installing the new windows 10 update so I can install the xbox app so I can download the games and ... it really is a pain in the ass!
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 9 June 2019 18:59 (four years ago) link
im sure microsoft will get a similar stream to browser window thing off the ground alongside their new xbox

TBH i'm not really interested in any of those games, probably gonna try to sell the codes

Well yeah, I’m only interested in the sense that I’ve never actually played a spyro or a crash game so feel like I should give them a go. Won’t be playing the CoD though and yeah, hadn’t considered selling off the code, good idea.

ah missed free Thimbleweed!
Did you get Slime Rancher? I did. I'd categorize it as a glorified clicker game. It's very very addictive, but once you've progressed with everything you're done with it forever (I was anyway)

Fallout: New Vegas is on sale, so any recommendations for a controller? I don't game on PC much (I usually get woefully underpowered laptops) so I'm not looking for anything high-performance (read: expensive).

you might not need one for it! Keyboard/mouse is a great combo for FPS

if you have a PS4 (or maybe even a PS3), you can use the controller with your computer as well - it'll recognize it
yeah the ps4 controller and xbox one controller are the best pc gamepads on the market currently, just use one of those if you don't like mouse+keyboard

used to be a huge gamer but only game i've loved and gotten really into the past few years has been overwatch. (to me it's basically a perfect team shooter.) but overall having some game ennui. it's like with all the capability and choice modern systems can deliver something is just missing for me.
that said, stuff i've (mostly) liked:- red dead 2- relxaing, pretty. not much of a 'game' at times- cities skylines- best city sim i've ever played- witcher 3- very cool, but the depth and detail almost takes the imagination out of an RPG experience- skyrim- liked when i played it originally, found it fairly flat and dull upon revisiting- hypnospace outlaw- funny, great concept- frostpunk- well-done city/strategy game- superhot- almost an ideal game to me, stresses a unique concept over graphics or lore or scope
medieval total war and age of empires ii were basically my life at one point... AoEII is still probably my favorite game of all time (can't play new remaster because I don't have Windows 10 sadly). a lot of recent strategy games left me really cold (tropico series- way too easy, anno 1800- too much granular logistical detail to the gameplay without the ability to view data or rationale behind it)
i dunno, i guess i gravitate towards 'easy to learn, hard to master' with a distinct aesthetic and good multiplayer. and i think i get bogged down on steam with too many options. i'm also very aware that this is all likely to my getting older and more jaded and not having the time to truly immerse myself. but i've taken so much to overwatch i know there must be something out there that can pique my interest. i love wasting an entire afternoon gaming, i kind of miss it
― global tetrahedron, Friday, 20 December 2019 20:02 (four years ago) link
not to derail, this is a general PC gaming thread so I think my question fits here. i also have a PS4 and thinking about death stranding because from what i can tell at least it's unique if nothing else
― global tetrahedron, Friday, 20 December 2019 20:03 (four years ago) link
im in a similar place w/r/t games, i used to play a lot and now i play like one or two games a year, lots of modern games leave me cold bc the open world/unlimited possibilities of so many games leaves me cold, probably just a function of getting older and not having huge blocks of time to get lost in the immersive world of a game.
that being said i just played the demo of superhot online and it was pretty damn fun, think i might take the plunge on it!
