mommy's a wight, daddy's a wight, they just seem a little weird

A friend of mine argued that the only credible route once Jon finds out the truth about his heritage is that he feels dutybound to rule

The spin-off about their flipper-babies is going to be dope.

It'd be kinda funny if they learn that they are related, but just shrug their heads. incest wasn't really such a big taboo in feudal societies. Ned Starks parents were cousins. Daenerys' parents were siblings.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 30 August 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

Anne Boleyn was beheaded because of incest accusations (ignoring the veracity of those claims).

Iron Throne more like iron bone-time amirite

louie mensch (milo z), Wednesday, 30 August 2017 20:23 (six years ago) link

Technically Anne Boleyn was beheaded because adultery against the king was seen as treason, right? You're still right though, I phrased that badly. People were executed for incest, as the film Marguerite & Julien shows. (A film I'm just about to put on right now, coincidentally) But cousins, aunts, uncles, those didn't have the same taboo that they have today.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 20:30 (six years ago) link

there must be some more ancient magic/forestbaby stuff in store: revelations about the white walkers & more 3 eyed raven biz. mb beric & tormund will frodo & sam it into the newly vacated north to destroy the secret white walker power orb. I like how the show balances the nonsense fantasy by having characters who basically resent that they live in a nonsense fantasy world.

also as good as dinklage is in this his american-trying-to-sound-british accent is kind of ludicrous

ogmor, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 20:52 (six years ago) link

FB that isn't really true. depends on when in european history you're talking. consanguinity of marriage within a certain (legally varying) degree was considered a sin. dispensation had to be given (i forget which english king(s) had to have this granted) the church pushed it out to 7, until the high middle ages when the european aristocracy began to be so interrelated that the ok degree was reduced.

the disability-producing inbreeding of the habsburgs, for ex, is a later early modern phenomenon. i don't know how the church handled that! or it's earlier and not european, if you wanna look at the ptolemies. indulgence of incest for political reasons tends to be a v narrow thing i think.

goole, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

ptolemies were european, if we're gonna be correcting each other

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link

more to the pt is that it's not clear what kind of taboo incest carries in this world or what the gen pop thinks of it. sometimes it's punished heavily but without any lasting consequence, and as a narrative device the writers seem to like it. lol nothing matters!

xp well yeah. but they picked put the practice of royal incest in egypt, right?

goole, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

yep you coulda just said pharaohs, you just happened to specifically pick the european ones

Incest in Westeros is generally thought of as taboo, but the Targaryens were powerful and in-charge and they liked incest, so who was gonna stop them really? It might have contributed to the coin flip nature of Targaryen personalities; they would either be regal and intelligent, or paranoid and a little mad.

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 30 August 2017 22:05 (six years ago) link

If Jon and Dany decide to get married and use side by side, maybe the people of Westeros will decide that they've had enough incest after the Targs and then Lannisters and then rise up in revolt

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 30 August 2017 22:29 (six years ago) link

Tywin and Joanna Lannister were first cousins as well.

It's interesting what you're saying, goole, but I'm almost certain I could find earlier examples of noble cousins marrying in feudal Denmark, at the least.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 22:45 (six years ago) link

I thought it was already well known and established, as voodoo points out, that the Targs were fine with familial hookups.

Have to admit that Eliza Dushku as a dark sorceress sounds pretty cool. Haven't seen her act since Wrong Turn, can't really assess her skills.

The problem is going to be Goyer misreading the source material as badass, awesome, epic.

sean gramophone, Saturday, 2 September 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link

Other books in the series are dumb? Or Black Company are the only non-dumb books to be published?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 2 September 2017 15:54 (six years ago) link

I've read the first two -- they're good and they have their own unique tone in the field of fantasy. I was kind of wrong footed by it at first but came to really appreciate it.

The Steven Erickson books, though, which are apparently hugely influenced by the black company, are complete shit (or at least the first one is-- sorry but if you start that poorly I'm not investing further time in you)

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 2 September 2017 16:18 (six years ago) link

The Malazan ones? Yeah, I tried to get through the first one and had to give up. Made nearly no sense to me, but I liked the ambition of it.

Frederik B, Saturday, 2 September 2017 16:37 (six years ago) link

I couldn't get through the first one either. The crazy number of subplots right out of the gate was ridiculous. Maybe start with a contained idea and build up from that.

OK what are the last half a doz posts about? Some other author? I'm confused. Whats Eliza Dushku got to do with anything?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 3 September 2017 05:43 (six years ago) link

She's playing the Night King

louie mensch (milo z), Sunday, 3 September 2017 05:49 (six years ago) link

She's a dark sorceress in a tv series adaptation of Glen Cook's Black Company. As linked many posts above.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 3 September 2017 11:01 (six years ago) link

Cosign on giving up Malazan in the first volume, it was like reading an RPG sourcebook on amphetamines.

chap, Sunday, 3 September 2017 11:38 (six years ago) link

iirc malazan did in fact start off as an RPG and he converted to novel form. and yes it's bad.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Sunday, 3 September 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

Yeah he seemed to have literally no grasp of pacing.
