xpost yeah? thanks!

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

i guess the "thanks!" applies to both j. and niels there, haha

i've mentioned the thread post count thing a few times over the years, and each time i can't remember if i've been told that it's not possible for some reason or another. but it sure would come in handy

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:46 (six years ago) link

There's the choice between oldest, newest, and "most relevant" - how's that last one calculated?

pplains, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:49 (six years ago) link

Twin peaks thread but nobody allowed to post in it

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:50 (six years ago) link

Would be very tough since the number of posts changes quickly and the search index does not. But another massive refactor is probably due anyway.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:50 (six years ago) link

Ah, that makes sense.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:51 (six years ago) link

I will be back in 2 years with the same suggestion, though. Sorry in advance

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

i was joking, karl, i don't know anything about which thread is longest. post at your peril!!

j., Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:55 (six years ago) link

Dammit j., bumping the correct dead thread is no laughing matter. I trusted you! Maybe I'll bump a dark star thread anyway just because

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

cosmic appropriateness is a legit reason for bumping a thread

j., Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

s&d , 'should i give a chance', and may 77 all have discussion. the longest is probably the 'giving a chance?' thread i think but may 77 has doc discussion

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

I posted about it a couple of months ago--not on the documentary thread, so I must have used one of those million Grateful Dead threads. Interested in what KM thought about it.

clemenza, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 20:01 (six years ago) link

thanks!

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link

"Post at peril" still the leading post strategy, and I'm fine with that tbh.

A crappy search function is what sets ilx apart, makes it unique imo.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 29 August 2017 20:04 (six years ago) link

ilx's backwardness is one of its lovable quirks

two months pass...

totally an unnecessary luxury but it'd be neat to have "drafts" for new threads. i just wrote up a new thread but i need to think about it some more.

willing to debug/test stuff too if you're in need

this would be dope

Simon H., Friday, 10 November 2017 16:07 (six years ago) link

I had written a GreaseMonkey script that hides thread. It was on another computer, but maybe I can do it again.

Dinsdale, Friday, 10 November 2017 21:05 (six years ago) link

What thread would you hide?

calstars, Friday, 10 November 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

there's at least one fairly obvious contender floating near the top of ILE since it was started this morning

- the ability to sort search results by date

calstars, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:03 (six years ago) link

you can sort the search results by newest first or oldest first,

Karl Malone, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

Brilliant thank you KM!

calstars, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:07 (six years ago) link

So I re-made that script for hiding threads. Here it is for anyone who wants it. Obviously you need Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension for it to work. It's pretty rough but it does the job as far as I'm concerned.

Dinsdale, Sunday, 12 November 2017 20:30 (six years ago) link

Random Shitposter (calstars), Friday, 29 December 2017 02:53 (six years ago) link

Search function already allows a similar level of creepiness without automation.

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 December 2017 03:03 (six years ago) link

When you search for threads, in the search results maybe the number of posts in a thread could be shown. Not sure if it's worth the effort but I'm just thinking of it being helpful if you're trying to find the most popular threads on topics w/a lot of different threads.

omar little, Friday, 29 December 2017 03:35 (six years ago) link

yes, has been mentioned before, would indeed be helpful

niels, Friday, 29 December 2017 07:34 (six years ago) link

a way to sort search results by the number of posts in each thread. i'm trying to bump the most frequently used grateful dead thread to talk about the new doc, but there's a million threads and in those cases it would be super useful to be able to just pick the one that has the most posts

Also it requires an extra step -- you have to consciously say "ok, I am searching for all of this person's posts" and live with yourself as you sift through that person's scattered posted thoughts looking for whatever it is that you're looking for.

the fact that this is how it's done elsewhere is not persuasive at all for me. one reason i like ilx is because the focus is on the topic of conversation (the thread) instead of the cult of personality that develops (and is developed) by a "follow this person" approach

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 29 December 2017 14:16 (six years ago) link

agree, ILX was a lot more boring for me when it was a place for buddy time ("jackoff sesh" era) or when people are working through their grudges together (same thing as buddy time imo, in a very male way). many of those posters are gone or post infrequently now and it's considerably less boring here (this is another reason why I find twitter inscrutable as something I'd want to do---it seems entirely people focused and ugh at those people, shameless self-promoters and self-absorbed nincompoops)

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

Well I just thought it would be a way to see what posters I’m a fan of have been up to. I guess I’ll have to learn how to “live with myself” and not feel “creepy” for wanting to read what they have to say.
