ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 25 August 2017 14:58 (six years ago) link

this album rocks

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 25 August 2017 15:06 (six years ago) link

I'm trying to get the hang of it. There are great moments for sure, but I haven't come around on the slower/mid-tempoed stuff yet. I'm kinda withholding my reactions though until I give it a few more chances.

how's life, Friday, 25 August 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link

The first track is nuts, that's for sure.

how's life, Friday, 25 August 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link

"the evil has landed" is still my fav track

Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 25 August 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

from the singles i imagined this record would be groovy but potentially depthless, but idk, the more mid-tempo stuff ("fortress" and "domesticated animals" especially) is buoyed by some of homme's best melodies imo

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 25 August 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

the last track is maybe my favorite qotsa song ever????

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 25 August 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

I just listened to that one again over lunch! I had kinda tuned out by that point when I gave the album a spin this morning on the way in. It's definitely one of the better songs. Might be my way in.

how's life, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:39 (six years ago) link

not sure about this one tbh

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 25 August 2017 17:26 (six years ago) link

Up to no. 3 'Domesticated Animals" and I know that I'll be buying it.

The only remotely weak record Homme/Queens has made is Lullabies. And yeah, this single is pretty weak, poorest single since "little Sister."

veronica moser, Friday, 25 August 2017 19:13 (six years ago) link

Lullabies is great. It's a sprawling mess in the best way

Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 25 August 2017 19:20 (six years ago) link

I like Lullabies a lot. It has 4 or 5 of their very best tunes and the production is appealingly weird.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 25 August 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link

i am p much exactly with vm, lullabies only one that's not good/great, but ime it was/remains v popular

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 25 August 2017 19:25 (six years ago) link

hmmph…

I would like it if Crooked Vultures came back… gives me my JPJ fix and I get to enjoy Grohl playing drums and not being pass/ag about music that ain't punk rock or butt rock…

veronica moser, Friday, 25 August 2017 19:26 (six years ago) link

xxxp are you kidding? that would be their high water mark imo

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 25 August 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

lucky bastards @ reading festival.

surprise guests.

mark e, Friday, 25 August 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

1. Rated r (one of my favorite records ever made) 2. S/t, 3. Era Vulgaris, 4. Them crooked Vultures (totally think this record belongs in any such ranking) 4. Songs… 7. Lullabies

haven't listened to Clockwork and Villains enuff, but know that they're better than

veronica moser, Friday, 25 August 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

…Lullabies…

veronica moser, Friday, 25 August 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

the Vultures record drags like hell imho

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 25 August 2017 21:05 (six years ago) link

These guys have 4 million Spotify listeners. That's like half of led zep.

i really love the single in the context of the album

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 26 August 2017 01:09 (six years ago) link

I'm gonna be the asshole that says they are a great band but also thinks the original s/t is still the best

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 26 August 2017 01:11 (six years ago) link

S/t is by far the best then songs for the deaf then rated r

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 August 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

Liking this more and more with each listen. Fortress and the title track are actual dad-rock par excellence.

how's life, Saturday, 26 August 2017 14:12 (six years ago) link

Fortress is quickly becoming a favorite. The production in some ways was difficult for me to connect with, especially the drums. However, the almost underdeveloped synths and similar drum sound on each track makes the album feel more uniform. And it swings

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 26 August 2017 18:06 (six years ago) link

first spin through, fortress jumped out. we'll see what grows

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Sunday, 27 August 2017 23:46 (six years ago) link

First and last tracks are amazing. I want to see the full musical based on this soundtrack.

you are juror number 144 and we will excuse you (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 28 August 2017 01:24 (six years ago) link

This album clicked with me this morning!

Sometimes I need time to dig on the album that is not the album I wanted.

I still think Ronson makes drums sound click and sometimes the guitars they are being crunched thru some old sampler

but I see the sort of arty/poppier/glammier thing that Homme was going for and maybe Ronson got him in a different zone

They are a remarkable band in many ways.

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 29 August 2017 16:34 (six years ago) link

I love the singles so much more within the context of everything else

the back half of fortress where it turns into sabbath's "snowblind" as played by crazy horse...

head like a haunted house has those t-rex backing vox too

Week of Wonders (Ross), Sunday, 3 September 2017 21:40 (six years ago) link

The "Telegram Sam" (and "Keep Your Hands To Yourself' !?!) is strong in "Un-Reborn Again".

totally feel that way McCain

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 4 September 2017 06:53 (six years ago) link

i love that this record's intro is literally a lyrical ode to the powers of rock

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 4 September 2017 06:54 (six years ago) link

one month passes...

this album is incredible and i think the band has peaked over these last 2 records

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 November 2017 19:54 (six years ago) link

hoo boy do i have some Oliveri stans you should meet

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Saturday, 4 November 2017 08:20 (six years ago) link

Lotsa nice tight and funky playing on this, and a refreshing light vibe. I'm not sure the songwriting is up to their best work, but I'm only one listen in.

i support his "Fuck Muse" stance

The Dearth of Stollen (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 10 December 2017 21:56 (six years ago) link

This sucks. I missed their show when they came through DC, but there's been rampant discussion over on the qotsa subreddit during this tour for the past few months about how his drug use/alcoholism is really getting on top of him this tour. There have been a few other incidents of asshole behavior. And he's always been a bit of a hothead, but it's been to the point where he's really disappointing the fans. The telltale signs of a middle-aged man frantically trying to keep a grip on his self-image as badass. This is the culmination of that I guess. Super lame.

Official Statement:

Last night, while in a state of being lost in performance, I kicked over various lighting and equipment on our stage. Today it was brought to my attention that this included a camera held by photographer Chelsea Lauren. I did not mean for that to happen and I am very sorry. I would never intentionally cause harm to anyone working at or attending one of our shows and I hope Chelsea will accept my sincere apology.—Joshua Homme

I take "Lost In Performance"="Fucked Up On Something".

Never Learn To Mike Love (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 10 December 2017 23:13 (six years ago) link

well that's p weak

he was superb at the boston show but seemed extremely cokey. lots of nonsense between songs. hell, the record is kinda like that. the most recent video too.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 10 December 2017 23:19 (six years ago) link

That's a bunch of bullshit. The video clearly shows him kicking exactly one thing - the photographer and her camera.
