I noticed there are some Russell Malone references on this thread. His latest release Time for the Dancers is sick.

Looks like that Abercrombie book is lead sheets plus commentary. No solo transcriptions, if that's what your after.

Abercrombie tears shit up on Enrico Rava's Katcharpari from 1973, which was just remastered by the MPS label. It's a very Jack Johnson/On the Corner-ish album, and Abercrombie's guitar playing is ferocious.

Ooh need to check this out. I always thought he was kind of a slept on guitarist in hipper jazz circles although he has had some commercial success.

I reviewed the new Malone album in my Stereogum column. You can stream one track there.
I just remembered I have 3 Billy Cobham albums from the '70s with John Abercrombie on 'em. Gonna dig those out.

That´s correct. There are 32 tunes from his entire career, from "Timeless" to "Within A Song" + a discography. It also features some alternative chord voicings heard on record but not listed in the lead sheets. You´ll learn about his obsession with minor flat six chords that imply the aeolian mode.

Well, in that case, I'll have to get it then

But really came to post about that other motif, that I recently discovered Rudy's had reopened on Broome Street. Went there last week and at the top of the stairs leading to the basement level is a picture of Russell M.

Spotify has an album now with Ted that I had never heard before, a 1973 Albert Heath record called Kwanzaa. Kenny Barron is on it too. Pretty good.

I believe I may have mentioned before, perhaps on this very thread, that Albert 'Tootie" Heath's brother Jimmy assigned your teacher the nickname Texas Ted.

I may have mentioned that he took over for Ted after Ted died and I had a semester of lessons with him. He was a very nice guy and a good teacher but I was in a really bad emotional place at the time and couldn't absorb much. I did gain one very useful lesson from him, which was to think about setting up your next improvisational moves on the neck of the guitar the way a pool player sets up for his next shot.

Surprised by the zero votes for Metheny, only because the biggest jazz fanatic I knew in school (which is saying a lot because I knew quite a few who were dedicated fans, playing in bands, hosting a jazz radio show on the school's radio station, etc.) was also a guitarist who worshipped Metheny, and now that he's teaching somewhere I'm sure he's pushing him on to his students. I would never vote for him but despite my reservations I have grown to like him, he's a good sideman on a good number of albums I really like and I love the one he did with Ornette Coleman.
― birdistheword, Monday, 11 September 2023 10:35 (seven months ago) link
Having his name misspelled might not have helped his vote count. I'm enthralled by about half the tracks on his debut, respect his outing with Ornette, and everything else I've heard completely escapes me. Especially when he plays that guitar synth sound that sound like my cat talking to the birds: "mew mew mew mew mew mew...mew mew mew mew mew".
More to the point, where's Terje Rypdal?!?
― Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 01:03 (seven months ago) link
...who I see was mentioned once above. As was Lenny Breau, who deserves attention though I wouldn't have voted for him.
― Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 01:07 (seven months ago) link
For people who never clicked with Metheny or have only heard his smoother side, check out his playing on Kenny Garrett's Pursuance record,it's fierce.

This is how I feel about a lot of his music. His sound ranges from tolerable to awful on most records for me, and sound/tone is everything to me. He smokes on that Trio 99/00 album though and sounds better than usual as well.
