So when there is a doublewide stairway my assumption is that the protocol is that the far right hand side is the ascending side ( when one is at the lower level) and the left-right side serves as a passing lane. Sometimes people will try to sneak an endrun when this lane is empty but that seems dodgy.

Or do the two sides around the center rail actually constitute two separate stairways, each with its own up and down lane?

I think your first description is correct, but people often fall into the second pattern, especially when a crowded train has emptied a lot of passengers into the station.

obvs point perhaps not so obvs for non-urban dwellers but it's not so much that you are walking slow as it is that there is a limited amount of sidewalk/stairs/crosswalk and you are actively and unnecessarily blocking the flow of traffic. I don't mind slow walkers if they hover to one side or the other; my main issue is motherfuckers who take up the whole sidewalk with a conversation or walk three deep. Or, worse, sections of town in front of hotels, bars, restaurants, etc where people treat the sidewalk as if it's a patio and set up a human wall in the middle of a walkway.

in general, it's just that lack of situational awareness is exhausting for anyone who has to make their way around the city in a hurry. You can assume everyone is late to something (the MTA has seen to that) so maybe please don't crawl or sprawl out in public space

god knows i support the congestion fee but if 15-17% of CBD vehicle trips suddenly stop happening, the subway will explode. it'll take the mta 20 years to add that much capacity, optimistically. be good for busses and bikes tho

the December weekend subway shit gets worse every year. I went to MoMA to see a rare Warhol film and it soooo wasn't worth it.

re: congestion: in theory, a coordinated master plan for fixing the system would use the regained surface capacity to make various routes bus-only and run continuous massive service enabling you to take more lines out of service for longer continuous stretches of repair, on the path back to regaining good service linewide. unfortunately every aspect of what i just described is either fiscally or politically unthinkable at present, good luck nyc

i played it safe: one-seat J ride to essex and back for 'umbrellas of cherbourg.' in a bizarre inversion of the norm, this weekend jaunt went far, far more smoothly than any of my trips up to columbia this week which were just a cavalcade of stopping-in-tunnels, waiting-for-transfers, random stop skips, etc...
