Saw him play this live with SP last year on the In Plainsong tour, iirc they closed the show with it. it was a total shred fest, Jimmy pounding on the drums. I dig this version, especially the double-tracked vox on the refrain, but I hope the rest of the album is more in line with "Aeronaut." I think that might be my favorite post-2000 song that Bill has written, besides "Chrysanthemum."

xp the video is footage from his short film Pillbox. I didn't bother watching it. Not into any of his extracurricular shit

flappy bird, Friday, 29 September 2017 18:06 (six years ago) link

was hoping dude would save this song for a sp record

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 29 September 2017 23:00 (six years ago) link

the arrangement is less uninteresting than that other song though, and i was surprised that i actually liked the imagery in the video (even as its apparently taken from a longer film), his videos have been embarrassing for ages now

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 29 September 2017 23:06 (six years ago) link

the melody sounds like something adam levine would sing

Erotic Wolf (crüt), Friday, 29 September 2017 23:14 (six years ago) link

He opened all the In Plainsong shows last year with a new song called "Cardinal Rule." I wonder if that's on here under a different title or if it was scrapped/relegated to a b-side. Good song.

flappy bird, Saturday, 30 September 2017 03:03 (six years ago) link

i'm listening to this. it's

1. not very embarrassing at all!
2. occasionally inspired! ("mandarynne" reminds me of "once in a while" a lot and probably for that reason i think it's the best song here)
3. still v weird and imbalanced in mixing, mastering, arrangement, etc.
4. lyrically unforgivable

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

it's sort of what i expected the never-recorded chicago songs album to sound like with slightly hookier songs

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

Well that's pretty promising! Billy has set the bar so low for himself. Gonna wait for my LP to come in the mail to listen, but happy to hear that he actually gives a shit again. re: lyrics... lol let me guess, lots of "lovers"? I think "Aeronaut" is fantastic but my man can't write a song without some line about "lovers." Mixing issues seem endemic to any Rick Rubin project.

Apparently Bill said that if this does well, he'll release Chicago Songs. yeah ok sure guy

yeah and i bet if you play this theoretical chicago songs disc backwards you unlock the metro dvd

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:18 (six years ago) link

ha! and only then will the Machina Mystery finally be solved.

fwiw he did record Chicago Songs, it does exist, but he shelved it after (brace yourself) he went on Netphoria after debuting those songs & saw people were pissed that he wasn't playing electric guitar.

flappy bird, Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:19 (six years ago) link

whoops i didn't brace myself

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 October 2017 18:38 (six years ago) link

Billy absolutely went on blamo & netphoria & the o-board. i mean he uses SPFC to remember lyrics in all those Madame ZuZus performances.

Sam Weller, Monday, 9 October 2017 12:32 (six years ago) link

The most surprising thing to me is not Billy's, um, views, but the fact that Channel 4 sent a crew over to do the interview in the first place. Didn't think the UK cared that much for BC/SP anymore, and I have lived in the UK for almost a decade.

Sam Weller, Monday, 9 October 2017 12:42 (six years ago) link

oh yeah that's right every time i engage with a mediocre new billy corgan project i need to remind myself that he somehow sucks even more now than he used to

Never been a Corgan/SP fan, but am a sucker for Rick Rubin elder production (Neil Diamond's 12 Songs as much as Cash). Into this, two songs in.

i'm with Brad, SP is my favorite band & their music has been with me my whole life, although i disagree with this, couple decades is too harsh (Adore, SP's last masterpiece, came out in '98, & the Machina albums are awesome even if unfinished/compromised). he's still an amazing guitarist, and I really, really love "Aeronaut." even if you just count material written & recorded '88-00, that's nearly 200 songs, and I can't think of many SP1 bonafide duds.

i haven't seen the interview but i'm sure it's indefensible & stupid

flappy bird, Monday, 9 October 2017 16:59 (six years ago) link

Is Billy Corngasm actually going by 'Bill' these days or is that all you, flappy?

the scarest move i ever seen is scary move 4 (Old Lunch), Monday, 9 October 2017 17:15 (six years ago) link

he's going by william patrick corgan

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 9 October 2017 17:17 (six years ago) link

no i just think it's funny to call him Bill. and yeah he's going by his full name or just WPC for this record

flappy bird, Monday, 9 October 2017 17:20 (six years ago) link

i'd like to upgrade my opinion from "not embarrassing" to "my favorite thing dude's put out since machina 2"

yes!!!

He was on Howard today. Great interview, less rushed than 2014 and as good as 2012. Clearly happier & more relaxed now. Still somewhat cranky but fatherhood has really sanded the edges down. No crazy talk. He performed 1979, Aeronaut, and Neil Young's After the Gold Rush on acoustic guitar. Some interesting bits:

-Reiterated how grateful he is to James, D'arcy, and Jimmy for supporting him 100% from the very beginning - from his singing voice, to his songs, to his "zig-zag" stylistic turns in the early pre-Gish years and beyond. He's on good terms with all 3 now.
-He was recently apologizing to D'arcy for being an asshole in the band and she cut him off and said, "Billy. You wrote so many great songs, we never would've done that without you being that way. We were lazy, we were misguided. You had to be that way." Said it was a profoundly healing moment.
-Chris Fabian tried to gain ownership of Billy's catalogue of songs when they were getting a divorce.
-Said "Now (And Then)" is an incredibly dark & angry song about his parents & he has a hard time singing it.
-Not on good terms with his father right now, didn't come to visit his son.
-Says his mom's ghost stole 8 days of work on his book and his girlfriend saw the ghost leave through the kitchen with the pages, her head down.

i never knew this but it's certainly one of the best songs he's ever written

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 16 October 2017 18:46 (six years ago) link

agreed. especially when he performs it acoustically. there's a great performance from Steve Jones' radio show in 2005, and he's been doing it on the current tour. Really excited for the show on Wednesday - at the two shows he did in Brooklyn, he didn't repeat a single song in the second set. First set is the new album + "If I Were a Carpenter" by Tim Hardin.

flappy bird, Monday, 16 October 2017 19:01 (six years ago) link

Also, as far as his voice is concerned... I don't think he was lying when he said he could "slip into the old Pumpkins voice" whenever he wanted. This video gave me chills. Sounds like a mid-90's performance.

he also said that he's met a reptilian and hinted at anderson cooper being a globalist illuminati guy

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 16 October 2017 23:42 (six years ago) link

anderson cooper's hit piece on Billy's charity mag cover with his cats was inexplicable & bizarre though. the way he described it was exactly as it went down. I don't blame him for making those "FUCK YOU ANDERSON COOPER" t-shirts in 2014. as for the "shapeshifter" (his words), my man was talking about his mom's ghost stealing pages of his memoir and psychics seeing dead friends earlier in the interview. he's always been drawn to that stuff & super paranoid- I think in the Kim Thayil "the core, the heart music" thread, there's a link to a post from someone who worked with him circa 2009, when Billy bought a bunch of gold bricks because he was convinced the dollar was about to collapse.

flappy bird, Monday, 16 October 2017 23:50 (six years ago) link

it wasnt that bizarre. he has a silly segment on his show for lol fun stuff and that pic was a meme before anderson ever put it on his show.

I disagree. yes it was a meme, it's a cute & funny pic, but Cooper's piece was so mean-spirited, lacked context & was disingenuous. It was a misleading segment- and yeah it was a tag at the end of his show, but I don't blame Billy for being pissed. I usually laugh at Billy when his persecution complex flares up, but this was a weird one. Don't know if AC is going to Eyes Wide Shut ceremonies but w/e, Billy was fine today.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 00:05 (six years ago) link

I can understand someone not clued into Billy Corgan's activities in 2014 (aka most people) not knowing that it was a charity mag, that Billy's done "silly"/"schmaltzy" stuff like this his entire career, that the Smashing Pumpkins or even Billy were still active and making work. But to do such a nasty piece w/o any journalistic regard for real fact-checking, it was really weird. and yeah, lol fun segment sure, but it's CNN.
