the characters that i enjoy at this point are basically the hound and davos. cersei was great until recently but it feels like her arc ended last season and now she's just big boss.

i can't remember if i liked the actor who played robb or not

Me neither; speaks volumes.

I mean, above all my issue is that the dialogue has gotten fucking awful

second the recommendation for all Beric lovers to watch Fortititude which is insane.

ian, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:40 (six years ago) link

Is the only reason they are wrapping things up so quickly that they don't want to have to renegotiate contracts? Seems like this show would have benefited from another season or two.

DJI, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

is s2 of Fortitude any good? I liked s1 but felt it might have been better off as a mini.

i'm enjoying this season a lot, none of the acting bothers me tbh. but there's something to be said for the way the show was so intricate and sinister in those first several seasons, just the way the webs would close around characters or the story would progress leading up to massive events. like Ned going to King's Landing, the red wedding, Blackwater Bay, etc. those seasons were paced pretty perfectly and the slow bits were valuable at building characters up and building the world. i went from that perfect pacing to inconsistent pacing to entire episodes of characters pacing, and now entire episodes of fast-paced action. i don't care too much, this is the best season since 4. if it's going to turn into a big insane show about zombies with a dragon vs the entire population of westeros and 2 dragons, it's all good with me.

still think they whiffed on not using Lady Stoneheart, they're so far from the books now that they might as well have done so. she'd be a pretty ill character if done right, this vengeful fucked up looking banshee.

nomar, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:16 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I would probably agree that this is the best season since 4.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

enh I agreed with the producers when they were like "we're not bringing back Michelle Fairley just to do that"

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 17:31 (six years ago) link

well i mean we had four episodes consisting of nothing but awkward pauses involving Tyrion and Grey Worm and Missandei, they could have brought back Stoneheart in an expanded, more interesting role.

going to beautifully harmonious with grrm dying and some hack fantasy jobber finishing the books

is that the view on how wheel of time played out?

― 龜, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 15:56

i have no idea tbh but the guy who finished those is decent in his own right at least. jokes aside i am sure they would get someone passable in.

― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 16:00

I get the impression that Sanderson was supposed to be better than Jordan. I think Martin rejected the possibility of someone else finishing the series.

Trying not to fall off a speeding dragon for hours after all those days of fighting, starving, walking, freezing and sleep deprivation must be really shit.

Staying on a flying dragon is the hardest thing for me to buy. A harness seat and some pouches for the men to sit inside would would be nice.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:07 (six years ago) link

I can't even enjoy The Hound much because his scripts have been weak.

I'm kind of surprised how far the dragon action goes for ILX. Because for me that stuff is only ever as good as the storytelling is. Special effects aren't good enough yet for dragon action to be enjoyable in itself. Since the storytelling has suffered so much, the spectacle loses its charge.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:19 (six years ago) link

The dragons have always looked great. Find it extraordinary that some people aren't convinced by them, particularly as Sean Bean provided the motion capture.

nashwan, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

x-post: Well, normally that's true, but a lot of the spectacle this season is payoff to the storytelling done years ago by the show - or by GRRM decades ago, at this point. Seeing dragons and Dothraki attack the Lannisters was kinda plotted as muddled as the rest of the season, but there was so much thematically about how the old orders are getting broken by new reality that it made it's point. Seeing horse riders coming out of the fire was a great payoff to everything the show has said about feudal structures and the value of knights.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

robert jordan RIP but sanderson finished up 'the wheel of time' like a pro ace coming in in the 7th inning and saving a game. the 300-page final battle in the last book is completely fucking awesome, the battle of the pelennor fields on mushrooms. fingers crossed benioff / weiss kick it into sanderson's gear next season as the finale approaches

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

yeah sanderson did alright. for some masochistic reason i missed jordan's voice a bit but it was a satisfying ending. however,i'll echo what i said above about fantasy as a genre having a tough time with endings.

ryan, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 18:32 (six years ago) link

david gemmell is an exception but yeah there's a lot of stephen king syndrome in fantasists trying to stick landings

True but the excitement created by the earlier stuff is wearing off fast.

my girlfriend thought the final scene of last week's ep would improve immeasurably if set to a different score, so for fun I synced it up with some ultra-dramatic music from LOST.

not really the thread for this...BUT YOU COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG

Sanderson mostly sucked, and in a very similar way to Benioff & Weiss. Yeah, he got the job done and he excised a lot of the tedious stuff (and weird obsessions) that Jordan had become mired in but the last couple of books (and especially the final battle) were just rote tying up of loose ends

I mean fair play to the guy, it was an impossible job, but I honestly wish they'd just left it unfinished

nice work. never remember the lost music being so retro and campy - that brass part wouldn't be out of place on the original star trek.

I'm halfway through S5 (and watching weekly now), rewatching clips from the first season (after the Cersei/Robert exchange above) the dropoff in quality is shocking. Entire episodes in the middle season are passing without a single memorable thing happening. All of Dany's plotline in Esseros is a big 'who cares.'

louie mensch (milo z), Thursday, 24 August 2017 23:02 (six years ago) link

just like the books

, Thursday, 24 August 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

Yeah I found myself glazing over in those bits in the books. Cept for that weird bit with the priests where she's in some kind of labyrinth with endless doors... did they even do that bit in the show? I dont recall it.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 24 August 2017 23:33 (six years ago) link

Yes, that was in season 2 where Drogo made a surprise cameo.

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Saturday, 26 August 2017 00:41 (six years ago) link

I think we're supposed to be shocked and pumped up when she appears again in the next episode or sometime next season. But I'd guess there's almost no chance that she's just dead. If they did, that was an awful ending for her character!

Karl Malone, Saturday, 26 August 2017 01:44 (six years ago) link

she's with euron somewhere, getting tortured probably.

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Saturday, 26 August 2017 01:48 (six years ago) link

end of this season will be a big ol' battle w/Euron vs the unsullied and--from the sea--a small but surprisingly effective fleet guided by Theon. maybe a dragon will show up?

nomar, Saturday, 26 August 2017 02:55 (six years ago) link

they gotta clear the decks a bit more to have some focus on the night king/night dragon/wight calvary vs everyone thing.

does the fact they didn't show them actually dying mean there's a chance they're not dead? seems unlike got to imply a grizzly death when it could show it.
