I barely noticed what Arya and Sansa were jawing about, which I know is going to trip me up some time next season when it pays off and I've forgotten what's going on, yet again. I was too busy spending the episode going "holy shit!" every five minutes. Does that make me some easily entertained sucker? Probably. I'm fine with that.

I thought Sansa acting all retrograde in her scenes with Littlefinger and then snotty with Brienne was a sign that she's definitely playing along to entrap LF.

Yeah, this is the only thing that makes sense -- Sansa is not as young and naive as she once was, so to go through that whole, "You're right, Brienne WOULD have to step in if things came to a head between us" then send Brienne away makes no sense at all otherwise.

Unless she is planning to act against arya

Am I the first boring bastard to mention the chains? How did they get the chains around the submerged dragon? The zombies are useless in water iirc.

The time/distance thing is so fucked beyond repair also - how many hours were they trapped on the Isle of Wight? How far were they from the 300 mile long wall or Hardhome? The time required for Gendry to run back, get a raven sent to Dragonstone, Dany to fly what's supposed to be thousands of miles north etc.

But otherwise good work lads.

It definitely crossed a line imo. The first time that the elision of time and distance was nakedly fundamental to the storyline instead of just a convenience that you could sort of explain away.

All is redeemed by this gif of the wight-in-a-bag raising its head upon hearing the dragon.

i don't frequent this thread much but wouldn't the easy explanation of the time/distance stuff be that this is all a story being retold by someone? perhaps Sam?

now that we have the conclusion of Mission Impossible beyond the wall, it seems like it is a giant boondoggle that was done to have an excuse to create a wight-dragon. otherwise there really was no plausible reason for dany to ever go beyond the wall with her dragons (and a little mystifying why she would bring all three)

i'll be pretty disappointed if littlefinger ends up outmanuevering arya, just feel like training under a devious motherfucker like jaqen should put you worlds above a littlefinger

Someone upthread mentioned only seeing 7 guys on the expedition. There was a long distance shot right near the beginning where at least ten dudes were visible.

was it ever established that the night king or one of his buddies can freeze water at will? seems implausible that they'd wait around for 4 days just waiting for water to freeze

If they could freeze water at will then Hardhome would have ended differently wouldn't it?

wasn't sure they'd be able to keep the momentum that long w/the surly seven hanging out on the Isle of Wight just waiting but they accomplished it pretty well.

establishing a 'killing the master white walker kills all its wights too' dynamic means we'll probably see a final battle where the humans are gonna get owned pretty bad until a last ditch/suicidal attempt to take out the night king succeeds and all the wights spontaneously disintegrate

Was waiting for the first one in the episode to be all "some slag's made a fackin fire ere", most obnoxious cockney accent imaginable etc

Everyone avoiding Bran because he's so weird seems like misdirection, he's sitting on too much hot gossip to leave him sitting under trees in the freezing cold while you get manipulated into plotting against your own family

What was Jon up to while everyone was sitting on the dragon?! It's the second act of dramatic cowardice bringing him back. So stupid. (Still enjoying it, though)

xp I figure it's quite expensive to render the FX of Isaac Hempstead-Wright sitting down, so they only have him in a few eps

i think the idea was supposed to be that jon was caught in 2 minds about whether to gtfo or to go rambo and try to kill the night king. it was p dumb regardless.

it suddenly doesn't feel like that big a deal. how difficult is it to just have a dragon v high in the air then fly down and torch him.

gotta say the time/distance isn't really bothering me - this show sank to walking dead status ages ago, huge desire to watch it asap every week while simultaneously thinking it gets worse and worse.

has a very 'the eagles should have dropped the ring in mt. doom' feel. fingers crossed there's a major curveball or two

fire destroys wights but does it kill white walkers? they stepped over some small flames without too much fuss in this episode.

I would assume fire has no substantial effect on the walkers, since it is much easier to come by than dragonglass

i mean we haven't seen much of the white walkers/night king i guess, but how nimble are they? the night king doesn't look particularly athletic.

There's really no good explanation for why this show spend whole seasons, months in the show, traveling from a to b in the first few seasons, and it now takes a couple of minutes/days. It's just because the showrunners can't be bothered now that they don't have the books to guide them and it's stupid and it undermines so much of what the books are about and who cares we still have the books.

Another thing I liked in this ep was that the wight that gets hit with a rock was really his own character. He keeps getting back up! And then he comes back out of the ice to pull on Tormund! Wonder what his name is in the script.

Think Lannisters and Stark/Targaryens will be forced to collaborate on using Qyburn's state of the art big crossbow to just fling unending piles of awkwardly shaped dragon glass at the Night King until a lucky glancing blow ends him

It's not just any tv-show, it's an adaptation of a book series. And yeah, the books are all about graph paper, or maps, and strategy, and travel routes. Which ties into this whole larger theme of complexity, of not being black and white, not just doing a heros journey, etc. Being annoyed that the show is fucking that aspect up, now, not from the start, but seven years into the story, is not 'insipid'.

The opening sequence every week show the creation of a miniature version of the world! The sense of world/space/geography is an obvious pleasure with this show. Or used to be.
