it was a great episode on the one hand

on the other hand...

killing the dragon & making it into ice zombie dragon for me was like that scene when Homer's science teacher burns the donut NOOOOOO THIS IS NOT HAPPENING THIS IS NOT HAPPENING ;_;

also...i had this (stupid, naive) hope that Arya wasnt just a sociopathic revengebot 5000 now and it's bumming me out that that's how she's shaking out. Please dont destroy my favorite character pleeeeeease let her be playing some kind of long game or something

keep hoping she suddenly takes off HER face and it would be Jaqen and that MY Arya will still show up

No doubt there were like a dozen unnamed humans conveniently getting killed so our heroes didn't have to. Could've used some scenes of them sitting around the fire talking about how they were gonna spend their retirement soon as they finished this one last case so we could feel for them.

All the dead horses for starters.

True. Good point.

It was nearly impossible to tell what was going on in some of these action scenes--and to me the real deus ex was Benjen riding in out of nowhere.

But despite all that, I liked the episode. GOT can still induce that frisson that few shows can (and Benjen riding in was a cool moment despite its machina-ness)

What? Yeah. I mean it wasn't clear when the last episode ended but early on in this one they showed how the group suddenly included some obvious wildling redshirts.

Evan, Monday, 21 August 2017 03:27 (six years ago) link

I'm ok with Arya coming across like she is. She's been exposed as a child to the worst things imaginable - witnessing her dads beheading, her dead uncle with a dogs head on him, wars and murder all around. It has damaged her irrevocably.

In all honesty Sansa's the one I feel is becoming a bit of a Cersei?

Huh, I must have missed that somehow, or not twigged.

I think they're showing that she is playing the long game! Testing Sansa. I'll put money on there being a future scene where Littlefinger pulls his face off and it's Arya.

Evan, Monday, 21 August 2017 03:31 (six years ago) link

Hm that could be interesting.

definitely an epic/impossible stand by the dream team (of sorts) in the middle of a frozen lake - some great overhead shots. I guess southerners have no use for hats? or notions of keeping yr noggin warm, at least. Dany's jacket is tres facconable

I think Benjin's (sp?) appearance kinda summed it up.. There's just no time for this, everybody's tired of it.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Monday, 21 August 2017 03:44 (six years ago) link

Dany's getup was her best so far in the entire series ... gorgeous

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 August 2017 03:47 (six years ago) link

They were peeling frozen clothing off him what was presumably hours later. No one survives that shit.

Nah, people survive mad amounts of hypothermia and exposure to cold. How he kept all his extremities from turning black and having to be removed, who knows.

I didn't mind anything in this season really, you can all get off the ride any time.

but I am not sure what that scene between Tyrion and Dany was about where he goes off on a tangent about succession planning, but I'm sure sometime in the next season they'll be figuring out how to have elections, and you'll know it's that episode coming up when the "previously on" flashes back to that convo

also where did Jon even get the idea to call her Dany? (is Jon at any point going to send word to Sansa what he's up to and what's been going on?)

dragon wightification was called in this thread like 5 episodes ago btw

Over/under on Bran warging into a dragon?

― Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Tuesday, July 18, 2017 9:13 AM (one month ago)

At least one dragon is getting warged, another wighted.

― nashwan, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 9:25 AM (one month ago)

The remaining one...wedgied?

― nashwan, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 9:26 AM (one month ago)

if the night's king can wight one of Dany's dragons I'll be surprised and disappointed and sad, but you kinda predicted jodie whittaker so I'll go ahead and mentally prepare for that now

― El Tomboto, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 9:28 AM (one month ago)

surely at least one dragon will die

― ogmor, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 9:29 AM (one month ago)

Yeah the ice dragon/dragon wight is coming--I think it might have been foreshadowed by one of Old Nan's stories in the books? (Along with giant ice spiders)

YES. Forgot about that. I was all "ffs, stop fan servicing!" but maybe she'd been called that by Vis way back when or something as well?

Look dont get me wrong I'm still enjoying all this. I just also love nitpicking haha.

And yes I'd remembered someone here'd predected dragon-wighting and I'd agreed so it was little suprise to me. A neat touch perhaps that it was Viserion it happened to? Revenge of the dead brother. haha.

I suspected Phil Ken Sebben was going to die in this episode during a stand off with Night King just like Rufio in Hook but I guess all his talk about being there for a reason would have gone out the window if that's how it played out.

I thought Sansa acting all retrograde in her scenes with Littlefinger and then snotty with Brienne was a sign that she's definitely playing along to entrap LF. At least I fucking hope so, if she learned anything from Cersei it ought to have been how to do that.

As an ilxor, I am uncompromising (El Tomboto), Monday, 21 August 2017 04:17 (six years ago) link

The succession plan is a sore subject for Dany cause Mirri Maz Duur told her she would never bear children "until the sun rises in the west and sets in the east" etc

At first glance this question from vulture seems interesting:

Does a wight dragon breath fire or ice?
Obviously, we don’t know the answer yet, but fire is the dragon’s most potent weapon and it’s hard to believe Undead Viserion would be left with no murder-breathing skills whatsoever. If he breathes ice instead of fire, that would set him up for an interesting duel with his brothers.

But I figure Undead Viserion's flame breath is how they're going to get through the Wall, since they didn't ever really mention that Horn thing from the books or whatever.

Still very confused how they all rode a dragon back home if dragon riding is something only targaryans can do and arrrgh must not think about it too hard.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 21 August 2017 05:14 (six years ago) link

also why didn't they just ride the dragon all the way back to dragonstone

it's a show about dragons and zombies

Van Horn Street, Monday, 21 August 2017 05:36 (six years ago) link

but with realistic anti-dragon weapon development

Karl Malone, Monday, 21 August 2017 06:17 (six years ago) link

this episode was 79 min long, next week's is 80+ right?

i enjoyed this. wasn't sure they'd be able to keep the momentum that long w/the surly seven hanging out on the Isle of Wight just waiting but they accomplished it pretty well.

nomar, Monday, 21 August 2017 06:19 (six years ago) link

as noted above, dany and the dragons turning up isn't a deus ex machina - Jon explicitly sends for them and we see it play out on-screen

but yes, Benjen is

I find the Sansa /arya stuff kind of frustrating so far & confusing as far as what each character is getting at exactly?? It seems like there's stuff each of them could say which would actually set everything straight lol.. maybe I'm just being prepped for a good payoff, but it feels to me a little like no one knows what's going on

Otherwise still enjoying the show

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 21 August 2017 06:49 (six years ago) link

Arya having to lug around a literal bag of faces is so dumb

Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 06:52 (six years ago) link

yeah, i find their recent scenes frustrating too, for similar reasons. tonight as i was watching i thought about how the starks were beginning to turn on each other, like the lannisters, and why that is (proximity to power?) i think we're meant to make that connection, but i also think that ultimately they'll end up supporting each other because that's just how the starks roll.

Karl Malone, Monday, 21 August 2017 06:53 (six years ago) link

i also had stonery thoughts about the meaning of ice vs fire (ice as an enemy of progress, fire as a chaotic force to create new things)

Karl Malone, Monday, 21 August 2017 06:56 (six years ago) link

It would be fun if Arya wasn't Arya but didn't the establish you can only use faces of dead people whose faces you've removed? So barring some Face-off style swap, Arya must be Arya

ogmor, Monday, 21 August 2017 09:03 (six years ago) link

Isle of Wight

Nice.

I barely noticed what Arya and Sansa were jawing about, which I know is going to trip me up some time next season when it pays off and I've forgotten what's going on, yet again. I was too busy spending the episode going "holy shit!" every five minutes. Does that make me some easily entertained sucker? Probably. I'm fine with that.

trishyb, Monday, 21 August 2017 10:21 (six years ago) link

I thought Sansa acting all retrograde in her scenes with Littlefinger and then snotty with Brienne was a sign that she's definitely playing along to entrap LF.

Yeah, this is the only thing that makes sense -- Sansa is not as young and naive as she once was, so to go through that whole, "You're right, Brienne WOULD have to step in if things came to a head between us" then send Brienne away makes no sense at all otherwise.

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Monday, 21 August 2017 10:42 (six years ago) link

Unless she is planning to act against arya

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 21 August 2017 10:47 (six years ago) link

Am I the first boring bastard to mention the chains? How did they get the chains around the submerged dragon? The zombies are useless in water iirc.

The time/distance thing is so fucked beyond repair also - how many hours were they trapped on the Isle of Wight? How far were they from the 300 mile long wall or Hardhome? The time required for Gendry to run back, get a raven sent to Dragonstone, Dany to fly what's supposed to be thousands of miles north etc.

But otherwise good work lads.

nashwan, Monday, 21 August 2017 11:15 (six years ago) link

It definitely crossed a line imo. The first time that the elision of time and distance was nakedly fundamental to the storyline instead of just a convenience that you could sort of explain away.
