Let's face it-- the Cars had their moment in the sun. Sure, there a couple of die- hard fans still roaming the planet, making their own rock music and camping out for movie tickets, but it's a rare person that's willing to drop a Jefferson on a nicely remastered, beautifully repackaged, two- disc reissue of The Cars.

niels, Thursday, 17 August 2017 17:06 (six years ago) link

"Schreiber out."

nomar, Thursday, 17 August 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

lol p4k couldn't give a shit cos selling music is such an afterthought at this point.

who care about The Cars? but read this book by an ex-Pepsi asshole on marketing

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 17 August 2017 23:24 (six years ago) link

"a Jefferson" means 2 dollars? Or a nickel?

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Thursday, 17 August 2017 23:39 (six years ago) link

cars fans hear them on classic rock radio, why would they even need to buy cds

j., Friday, 18 August 2017 02:52 (six years ago) link

Cars don't even come with CD players anymore

It’s like some of these prestige television shows, with their slate-blue filters, expensive set pieces, and crisp dialogue. Such series are supremely well constructed, made by creators of great skill and taste, but there’s something lacking in the heart department, something a bit hollow. Painted Ruins, cursorily an album about battling demons, can feel a little like prestige music.

Burn. Funny that this year has seen music by Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire and Grizzly Bear, pretty much all the 'prestige music' that p4k promoted about ten years ago, and only Fleet Foxes has gotten bnm'ed. And that album is AWFUL.

Frederik B, Friday, 18 August 2017 14:41 (six years ago) link

well I think it hurts more for p4k & many of their readers because 10 years ago all of those bands (fleet foxes aside, i never fucked w them) were making better records.

Fleet Foxes album isn't awful, lol

alpine static, Friday, 18 August 2017 18:59 (six years ago) link

And also the '07/'08 albums from those 5 bands weren't good.

billstevejim, Saturday, 19 August 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

jk Strawberry Jam is good.

billstevejim, Saturday, 19 August 2017 21:43 (six years ago) link

Those bands had a run from 2006 - 2009 though, GADPY and all that (what is the P, Phoenix?). Animal Collective had a double in '07 with Strawberry Jam and PB's Person Pitch. Dirty Projectors' Rise Above was a primer for Bitte Orca, same goes for Grizzly Bear with Yellow House & the Friend EP going into Veckatimest. The s/t Fleet Foxes album came out in 2008. and imo, Neon Bible is Arcade Fire's best work.

flappy bird, Saturday, 19 August 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link

Yea, the glockenspiel era. 07-08. I also group Sound Of Silver and Dear Science into that bunch. Person Pitch is legit dope, but there was so much better stuff during that era. GADPY was '09 and iirc those records were an improvement. I haven't bothered listening to the 2017 records, but I would guess they sound fine compared to the stuff they were putting out 10 years ago. Also good for Pitchfork for avoiding Jan Wenner levels of "let's give this record 5 stars because it's the dude who sang I Can't Get No Satisfaction."

their version of this was giving Reflektor a 9 lol

August 18 2006:

People always ask: "When is Pitchfork gonna run a list of the top albums of the 1960s?" The answer now? Probably never. Not that we didn't consider it. It's just that when we sat down to map it all out, we found it would be more rewarding to approach the decade through its songs instead. After all, it was by and large a single-oriented era-- the long-player didn't really take over as a creative medium until the 60s had nearly come to an end. And besides, Revolver's ego is out of hand as it is.

August 21 2017:

On Tuesday, August 22, we present the 200 Best Albums of the 1960s. The epic size of this list allows us to explore all corners of music during the decade, which was one of rapid evolution and astronomical ambition.

John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman changed the face of jazz; Motown smashed chart records and brought pop music to new levels of sophistication; music met politics in a beautiful new way with Brazil’s Tropicália movement; the Velvet Underground created new templates for guitar music; early electronic music from artists like Terry Riley and Pauline Oliveros changed how sound was imagined; and, yes, Dylan and the Beatles became Dylan and the Beatles.

Join us on tomorrow for our look at the best of what one of the great musical decades had to offer.

I'm just being nitpicky, I'm actually looking forward to the write-ups.

P4k pulling their own lcd soundsystem

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 21 August 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

This should be cool though. I'm kinda hoping they'll one day re-do their 90s album list though because I'm sure their modern day writers could compile a more interesting one. It's aready been redone before so may as well

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 21 August 2017 16:49 (six years ago) link

Didn't they already redo their 90's list once before?

MarkoP, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:36 (six years ago) link

the 90s are different now though

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:44 (six years ago) link

TBH I'd be interested in new versions of the 70s and 80s lists, too. I assume they'd look quite different now. The top tracks write-ups for these two decades they did in 2015 and 2016 were nice.

mthrn, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:55 (six years ago) link

^^ that's beautiful. xp

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

they also need to replace all the 0tt entries that he made them take down lol

Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 18:00 (six years ago) link

Yeah those lists are pretty outdated (if that's the right word to use). it's crazy to think that Hounds of Love is somewhere around 95 in their 80s list

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 21 August 2017 18:03 (six years ago) link

If they did this list 10 years ago VU would probably be at #1. Now I'm going to guess either Miles, Coltrane or Live at the Apollo.

no way

In a Silent Way should win. But will it?

no

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link

Pet Sounds obviously

1. Vanilla Fudge - VANILLA FUDGE (1968)

this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link

they'll definitely want to make a "statement" of some kind so I can't see Pet Sounds being #1. In A Silent Way seems like a decent outside bet tbh

Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link

Any reason as to why "In a Silent Way" might overtake "A Love Supreme"?

MarkoP, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:38 (six years ago) link

they are going to make #1 the Coca Cola song and the write up will be about how Arcade Fire is still DO YOU SEE about the commodification of music

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

it will be extremely bold of them to make the no. 1 album of the '60s a jingle

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

Any reason as to why "In a Silent Way" might overtake "A Love Supreme"?

Cultural momentum. It's definitely been having a moment in the last decade or so

Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link

it's also easier to talk about its influence on various indie types

Number None, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link

i for one would rather not see a love supreme top this list *rehashes entire argument from 2011 over which deej got yelled at a lot*

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:41 (six years ago) link

No way a love supreme gets it

I didn't really know "in a silent way" had become so praised either tbh... when I first started on ilx I think the "rock critics know better than 80 years of jazz criticism" pick was "on the corner"

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:48 (six years ago) link

Spiritual hat jazz will def have some strong placings I'm sure

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 21 August 2017 19:49 (six years ago) link

I don't anywhere that makes as big a deal of In A Silent Way as this board tbh

I mean it's a good record but idk if it's become universally hailed or whatever.

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:50 (six years ago) link

feel like Spiritual Hat Jazz's best stuff/most canonical stuff came out in the 70s but yeah I could see Pharaoh Sanders' "Karma" showing up. I don't really recall Pfork having a lot of love for Sun Ra or Yusef Lateef but who knows. Late-period Coltrane will def be represented.

Οὖτις, Monday, 21 August 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

They did a spiritual jazz feature, didn't they? Like an introductory playlist or something.

200 albums is a lot, that's twice as much as the 70s/80s/90s lists, so I'm pretty sure they'll include at least something by Sun Ra.
