Let's face it-- the Cars had their moment in the sun. Sure, there a couple of die- hard fans still roaming the planet, making their own rock music and camping out for movie tickets, but it's a rare person that's willing to drop a Jefferson on a nicely remastered, beautifully repackaged, two- disc reissue of The Cars.

Such series are supremely well constructed, made by creators of great skill and taste, but there’s something lacking in the heart department, something a bit hollow. Painted Ruins, cursorily an album about battling demons, can feel a little like prestige music.

Burn. Funny that this year has seen music by Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire and Grizzly Bear, pretty much all the 'prestige music' that p4k promoted about ten years ago, and only Fleet Foxes has gotten bnm'ed. And that album is AWFUL.

well I think it hurts more for p4k & many of their readers because 10 years ago all of those bands (fleet foxes aside, i never fucked w them) were making better records.

Those bands had a run from 2006 - 2009 though, GADPY and all that (what is the P, Phoenix?). Animal Collective had a double in '07 with Strawberry Jam and PB's Person Pitch. Dirty Projectors' Rise Above was a primer for Bitte Orca, same goes for Grizzly Bear with Yellow House & the Friend EP going into Veckatimest. The s/t Fleet Foxes album came out in 2008. and imo, Neon Bible is Arcade Fire's best work.

Yea, the glockenspiel era. 07-08. I also group Sound Of Silver and Dear Science into that bunch. Person Pitch is legit dope, but there was so much better stuff during that era. GADPY was '09 and iirc those records were an improvement. I haven't bothered listening to the 2017 records, but I would guess they sound fine compared to the stuff they were putting out 10 years ago. Also good for Pitchfork for avoiding Jan Wenner levels of "let's give this record 5 stars because it's the dude who sang I Can't Get No Satisfaction."

Yeah those lists are pretty outdated (if that's the right word to use). it's crazy to think that Hounds of Love is somewhere around 95 in their 80s list
