I feel like you have grossly misread this show if you're comparing it to ATHF and Sealab 2021.

this show has brought plenty of LOLs in the first two seasons, but i'm also finding it a little light in that department in S3. enjoying the show and its storylines nonetheless.

i dunno, i guess there were some funny jokes, but to me this show being a family guy/archer style show is kind of a misdirection. not that those jokes are always bad per se, but they're kind of not the point.
like, the EB White dome line wasn't really funny to me either... or its humor is more deeply related to the nature of the characters than it is the actual punchline itself? idk. the overall absurdity of the situation is where the humor emanates for me, a more generalized aura of this show is hilarious mixes with awe-inspiring at times, rather than it being some rapid collection of good jokes or punchlines
It almost feels like an even more extreme version of bojack horseman in this regard, in that that shoe is still tied to explicit JOKES in a way this feels less concerned with

Next day opinion on s3e4: Drunk Rick designed the traps to be easy, mitigating his evilness a bit. I like how he had a snide idea for the first trick and then ran out of ideas. Still, he did put deathtraps up, even when he didn't know how awful the Vindicators were.

Rick and Morty is funny as hell but it's not 30 Rock one-liner funny, and thank fucking Christ for that
― Neanderthal, Monday, 14 August 2017 22:43 (six years ago) link
(no disrespect for 30 Rock, but it's more the outlandish situations and Rick's deadpan delivery that make for the hilarity on this show)
― Neanderthal, Monday, 14 August 2017 22:44 (six years ago) link
xxp Maybe we're getting different things out of it but that's not what Archer strikes me as at all. Yes, the jokes come often, but the show is way, way more driven by character and plot (and even some serialization!). It strikes me more as an EXTREMELY heightened version of something like Arrested Development.
― Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Monday, 14 August 2017 23:00 (six years ago) link
Yeah people who note (or criticize!) that about archer arent getting archer, I'm inclined to think.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 August 2017 23:08 (six years ago) link
It's a workplace comedy that happens to be about an alcoholic secret agent, his mother and their colleagues. You could do it as a live-action single-camera and lose nothing!
― Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Monday, 14 August 2017 23:34 (six years ago) link
And re the AD ref, it helps half that shows cast voice the actors in Archer!
Anyway! Off topic.
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 00:38 (six years ago) link
I don't mean to conflate archer and family guy but I think both are way more joke driven than this show is, which is more "clever" than funny imo
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 00:46 (six years ago) link
idk. to me, the show is very quotable and heavy on the laughs. the fact that the jokes are not just jokes-for-jokes-sake (interdimensional TV aside) and are driven by character development make them land a lot harder
― rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 01:59 (six years ago) link
I mean there's quotes I love to recite w/ friends but they are better in context of the show
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 02:01 (six years ago) link
Anyway. At start of ep when Rick is passed out on the meeting room table and i was like... "wait... is he lying in puddles of his own SHIT?!"
...and he was.

haha me too. I was p sure that's what it was but half-doubted they'd go all in.
another shit episode!
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 03:54 (six years ago) link
We end up with long action sequences taking place in increasingly outlandish worldscapes, so far removed from the familial setting that gave the previous episodes that good push-pull against reality.
There was one of those in literally the first episode of the whole series though! And the one in the episode you're referring too was very deliberately and explicitly contrasted with a mundane family therapy session! I don't think the show has changed so much as you're suffering from diminishing returns. Personally I find it sharper, funnier and more imaginative than ever.
― chap, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 15:11 (six years ago) link
yeah i get all that. I'm not sure, I just find the humour to be less madcap. Felt the very first ever episode worked fine as an intro to the characters but still feeling its way around. The universe of R&M really sets in a couple of episodes later. These just haven't tickled me as much as things like Meeseeks, Mr Poopybutthole or the House Party episode. Like, in those the madcap sci-fi action takes place around the family home. In these last ones it's more 'Oh shit is happening at home, so let's fuck off as far away from it as possible for no other reason than we can have an adventure loosely parodying a movie'. It's a matter of taste of course, but to me the manic, unpredictable nature of the humour has been replaced by manic, unpredictable plotlines and situations. The distinction is one of comedy and farce, to me, and while it's still an enjoyable show with some amusing moments, it's not making me laugh or raise my eyebrows in awe (and yeah it is an AWEsome show in many ways) like it once did

S02 def got better as I watched it more. Just the same, S03E01 & S03E02 felt especially packed with subtleties, and I need to watch them a few more times. It's too soon to assess.

another great one. i don't have much to say about it. i'd say the best episodes of the season are 1-2-3 and this one, followed by 5 then 4 easily the worst.
