Just saw a guy do this last night. Can't remember if or when I might have seen it before, only know I read about Al Jackson, Jr. doing it.

other weird snare muffling moves: draping a thin bedsheet over the head

(if you drape it over the entire drumset you can sort of sound like fleetwood mac)

I've done this with a t-shirt before, as well as a folded up piece of paper ... my first practice space was in a very reverberant room and the snare would ring like crazy if I didn't muffle it -- and at the time, the snare was way way louder than the rest of the kit, so it was a balance thing as well.

lars could have made st. anger 4 to 10% better if he would have stuck his wallet on the snare

oh, and a hand towel ... which was later "stolen" by the drummer from mag1k m@rkers ... I was angry about that towel for quite a while

I've done various stuff like this. I like muffled snare sounds, and its also a good way to cover up for less than perfect tuning (and tuning a snare drum well is a bitch).

A lot of older snares have a little built in muffle under the head that you can tighten or loosen.

I used this thing on a couple recording sessions and a Prince tribute show, it really brings out the low mids and sounds a lot more like a compressed '70s snare.

Does this work for guitar too?
