eat a sugar cookie every time Palin thanks Gwen Ifill for asking a question, like:

"i'm so glad you asked that, gwen, because it's a very important question"
"you know, that's a very difficult issue that a lot of voters are concerned about so thanks for bringing that up"
"gwen! good question! yeah... it's a good one."

etc etc

Gwen Ifill Breaks Ankle, But Still Plans To Meet 'Em In St. Louis

G Ifill.jpg First On TVNewser: PBS' Gwen Ifill has broken her ankle after tripping and falling down stairs at her home last night, a NewsHour insider tells TVNewser. We're told Ifill had been walking up a staircase, carrying research related to her moderating duties at Thursday's Vice Presidential debate in St. Louis, when she took a wrong step.

We are also told the show will go on: Ifill is planning to travel to Missouri for the big event.

COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this — to stay informed and to understand the world?

PALIN: I’ve read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media —

COURIC: But what ones specifically? I’m curious.

PALIN: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years.

COURIC: Can you name any of them?

PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news.

I know this is mostly reverse psychology, but I'm guessing Palin's not going to be nearly as trainwrecky as before for the debate. I expect her to be more with it, disappointing many and making all the Dems worry again -- even though it will be yet another temporary bounce.

because remember

10/10

Never forget.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 03:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean, the worries will go away once October gets into gear, but there's likely gonna be worryin' if Palin doesn't melt down.

The adviser said preparing her for the debate was "really hard" because the Alaska governor was learning about issues she had never dealt with before -- including those regarding North Korea and other hot spots around the globe.

oh yeah and

In defense, Republicans say the complaints are coming from "intellectual" conservatives -- not Main Street Republicans, who they insist love the "hockey mom," from Alaska, as Palin describes herself.

Aside from breaking into glossolalia or audibly farting on stage, what on earth could she possibly do for our cowardly media to do anything other than say she "exceeded expectations" after the debate?

playing the abortion card (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think the issue is exceeding expectations anymore.

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I have an ominous feeling that the left blogosphere and skeptical mainstream media have already been high-fiving each other about how awful she's going to be without considering that precisely what they hate about her is what those who like her find charming- everyone's hastily assuming that if she's an idiot this can only help the Dem side. But if Biden is belligerent and Palin never cracks her "everymom" mask, it could solidify the undecideds against the Dem ticket. Dems have a history of seeming "smug" and losing people even as they "win" debates, and this one is awfully easy to win in the wrong way.

Drew Daniel, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Most of the newspapers have lead with warnings already, so I think the Dems got the message.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I was about to say, it's not that there's no talk about it!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Apparently she was in 23 debates in the Alaskan election and went on to win so she can't be that bad at it. If she makes no major gaffes there will be "Palin Does Surprisingly Well" headlines next day and it will be a "win" for her. But in the end it won't make any difference since VP debates don't really matter. The most famous quip from a VP debate is the "You're no Jack Kennedy" one, and yet Bush/Quayle went on to win.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Apparently she was in 23 debates in the Alaskan election and went on to win so she can't be that bad at it.

Mmmm, there's an awful lot of assumptions to unpack there.

Oh my god pink flamingoes (Pancakes Hackman), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, all I'm suggesting is that she's used to the format and did well enough in it not to ruin her chances of winning a state election. At this point, she only has to be OK for it to be a "win".

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Not only does Palin deride the Democrats for saying that paying taxes is patriotic, the Palins owe back taxes.

The Palins don't "owe" back taxes until the IRS says they do.
