Yeah, I'd agree: it may not have had the suspense of the Suffering Game or the mechanical interest of the Eleventh Hour, but Clint really shined with the looser ruleset, and honestly the Stolen Century felt worth it for the character moments with Lup.

I like the exposition of the Stolen Century, but I don't like whatever mechanics it was they were using, and it was a bit too much exposition with very little risk or action, so it was just like listening to them tell a story rather than play a game. It's been established elsewhere on ILG that I'm a joyless monster, and it does seem like everyone else liked stolen century, so it's probably just me again. shrug. :) I'm definitely far too emotionally invested in the characters, which is why I wonder how the next campaign will fare. Hopefully they take enough time out to carefully plan what they're doing next, and don't just rush in

The McElroy Brothers Will Be In Trolls 2 is surprisingly great. Also Til Death Do Us Blart, the yearly Paul Blart 2 rewatch podcast (up to its second episode).

I love the McElroy Brothers so much. SO MUCH.

TAZ was a revelation for me, i was barely familiar with DD & wasnt even sure if I liked it but they made it such a positive fun show i was addicted right away.
I havent finished the Stolen Century but will soon.

MBMBaM is great, i listen every week.

I am not into Sawbones, or Trav's many podcasts.

I do like Griffin's RoseBuddies podcast. I hate watching the Bachelor/Ette and dont even care abt the show at all but I enjoy listening to them talk about it for some reason. Or did until they got handwringy a couple of months back & i havent gone back

Monster Factory makes me laugh so hard it causes me physical pain, and PeaceCraft, and Touch the Skyrim and pretty much any gameplay that they do I love. I also was super obsessed with CarBoys for a while

I even subscribed to Seeso to watch their show which was v cute & adorable & funny

oh hi, TAZ has been the only thing i've cared about at all this year

qualx, Saturday, 12 August 2017 02:44 (six years ago) link

i eventually became okay with stolen century, but i also really didn't like the new mechanics and i don't think it really went the way griffin was hoping (more group storytelling instead of DM+players). it was great for clint but not anyone else

it worries me bc i feel like griffin just really thinks FatT and other tabletop shows are better (they're not) and he wants to be like them, and i'm really hoping they just stick do 5e for the next campaign. TAZ shines because it's always been griffin and his asshole family playing an overly complicated game they don't try to hard to understand and by the third arc it had become Something Special in spite of that

i'm certain he'll be using PbtA for the next one and i'll be sad but probably get over it

qualx, Saturday, 12 August 2017 02:53 (six years ago) link

the only critique I have of TAZ is that Griffin is too in love with his stories/his own writing

honestly the first episode needle-scratch moment when Justin announces his character's name is taco spelled T A A KO was what hooked me

and the music

then for a long time i lived for Garfield the Deals Wizard and FANT AS Y COST CO

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 August 2017 03:28 (six years ago) link

Justin: I am a wizard. My name is T-A-A-K-O
Trav: "Tayko?"
Griffin: Ta...
Justin: (quietly) Pronounced "taco"
Griffin: ARE YOU NAMING YOUR GODDAMN WIZARD "TACO"?
Justin: *laughter*

srsly, of every hilarious moment in TAZ , this is the rosetta stone

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 August 2017 03:35 (six years ago) link

Car Boys, Touch the Skyrim, etc (not so much Let's Go to Hell) were great but it fucking sucks that Nick Robinson turned out to be a shitty person. I hope Polygon can at least pick up CoolGames Inc with a new cohost, but I have doubts.

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Saturday, 12 August 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link

what happened with Nick?

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 August 2017 22:15 (six years ago) link

outed as a twitter creep who harassed industry women in DMs (incl trying to convince an 18yo to meet him for sex), posted a bad apology and got roasted for not addressing the actual issue, was dropped by polygon

Love TAZ, though do not enjoy Lup the way everyone else seems to.

TAZ shines because it's always been griffin and his asshole family playing an overly complicated game they don't try to hard to understand and by the third arc it had become Something Special in spite of that

yeah idc abt Lup

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 August 2017 01:46 (six years ago) link

There are a bunch of great NPCs, and Lup is up there with the best of them imo. She's also a fan favourite because a) double sassy elf magic = double the fun, b) having a canonically trans character cements the moves towards inclusiveness that they'd been making, and c) FUCK YOU, GREG GRIMALDIS.

I'd heard about the Nick Robinson thing and knew there was a Polygon/McElroy bros connection, but I didn't realise he co-hosted Touch the Skyrim and CGI. Oof.

emil.y, Monday, 14 August 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

The inclusiveness stuff is great, it's just she feels a little overengineered to be awesome and lived by all, rather than actually being very interesting

also it is kind of amazing how they all had kids within a few years of each other. Old Clint is the uber-grandad!

Such wholesome family boys.

this was posted on reddit ages ago, it's a great profile of Clint, and some very moving stuff about the boys' mom & the effect of her passing

I've been meaning to bump this thread asking what people thought of the finale? Oddly the actual last episode didn't make me anywhere near as emotional as the penultimate one and The The Adventure Zone Zone roundup did - or perhaps not oddly, as the actual process of tying up loose ends just isn't going to be as emotionally charged, because there's a bit too much business to be taken care of. I still loved it, though - I'm basically very uncritical of anything Adventure Zone related because it became so important to me so quickly and it turns out that I'm a big old sap.

Since then I've been listening to a fair amount of MBMBaM, which isn't as good but does make me crack up *a lot*. I also tried a couple of episodes of Bunker Buddies, which is totally my wheelhouse content-wise but it didn't quite grab me. I'm going to try a few more, though.

emil.y, Saturday, 9 September 2017 15:13 (six years ago) link

i am still 2 episode away from the finale - loving the story though, esp now that they are back to regular D&D - stolen century was great but i def like it when the boys have more to do

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 September 2017 16:13 (six years ago) link

and yeah, MBMBaM is basically just a pure chucklefest <3

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 September 2017 16:14 (six years ago) link

Finale was enjoyable, but also had the extremely long-drawn-out post-climax scenes that are more fun for the participants than the listeners (see end of 3rd LotR film, etc)

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:18 (six years ago) link

what those were the best parts

qualx, Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:32 (six years ago) link

they've been on this campaign for 3 years they can have like 20 minutes of closure

qualx, Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:32 (six years ago) link

Just stopped by to say holy shit I love TAZ and I don't know how I missed this thread until now.

jjjusten, Sunday, 10 September 2017 04:16 (six years ago) link

i think TAZ is definitely the best thing they've created together

and like, to do that as a family is pretty fkn cool.

I know, the closure was fine, i was listening at 1am and desperate for it to finish so i could sleep, i am a grinch

that guy is lame & terrible at metaphors - not the mcelroys fault

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 16:53 (three years ago) link

A hectoring dude with bad politics on Tik-Tok is the fault of the McElroys? I don't even get the comparison.

I'm definitely off the train a little, just tired of the whole family promo machine, but a few of the main projects still bring some much-needed laughs.
