Grace and Frankie is fine for what it is - a senior sitcom - but it's largely joke-free and some of the acting (primarily Waterston/Sheen) is legit painful

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 18:38 (six years ago) link

Broad City rules, psyched for the return. Ilana was v good in otherwise mediocre Rough Night - Abbi is in a new movie called Person to Person that just opened here, heard it's more "a look into the lives of quirky new yorkers!" sorta thing but w/e i'll still see it bc I love her and Michael Cera.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 18:58 (six years ago) link

BC jumped the shark pretty definitively for me mid last season

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

broad city is annoyingly full of itself and has been since midway through season two

maura, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 19:42 (six years ago) link

otm, sadly

Number None, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

eh i thought season 3 was mostly good, even the hillary episode was whatever, but the whole bleeping out Trump's name in season 4 thing is so dumb

flappy bird, Thursday, 10 August 2017 01:43 (six years ago) link

Has any comedy been good past 2 (could stretch it to 3 maybe) seasons?

Spottie, Thursday, 10 August 2017 02:21 (six years ago) link

Lots! The most extreme example I can think of is Always Sunny.

i wish review had a longer third season

oh and nathan for you's third season had "smokers allowed" and "the hero"

maura, Thursday, 10 August 2017 12:10 (six years ago) link

friends
Seinfeld
Cheers
MASH
The New Girl

like a zillion others

I think comedies tend to peak around season 3-5, first season sometimes you're figuring stuff out, second season gets better, 3-5 cast knows how to work w each other and writers, but things haven't gotten stale

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 August 2017 12:49 (six years ago) link

Parks and Rec (big time late bloomer)
The Office (US)

I dunno like I could just keep listing like 80% of successful long running comedy shows

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 August 2017 12:51 (six years ago) link

Yeah, lots of sitcoms might have sketchy first seasons, and many peter out towards the end, but there's usually a significant sweet spot in the middle of several seasons.

yeah fuck you for spoiling a repurposed scene from the 1992 movie fire walk with me

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 14 August 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link

especially on the morning after the episode aired, my god

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 14 August 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link

confirmed: FWWM existed

mh, Monday, 14 August 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link

Uh it's a spoiler.

Anytime I see headlines about some band appearing in a Twin Peaks episode it's a spoiler. Stereogum's been doing this for every cameo since the season started.

billstevejim, Monday, 14 August 2017 16:41 (six years ago) link

It's def a spoiler. People who've already seen it know it happened already, so for them it's a useless article.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 14 August 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

yeah fuck you for spoiling a repurposed scene from the 1992 movie fire walk with me

thanks for describing it. i didn't click on the article in hopes that at least i would be in the dark about if it was new footage or old. so thank you for spoiling it in greater detail!

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 14 August 2017 16:48 (six years ago) link

you're welcome adam!!!!

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 14 August 2017 16:54 (six years ago) link

btw welcome to the internet!!!!

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 14 August 2017 16:55 (six years ago) link

that's a shitty attitude brad, for one thing the story went up last night right after the episode aired, and not everyone is able to watch it the night of. Bowie's appearance wasn't publicized, unlike other cameos they've mentioned (Sky Ferreira, Moby, Hudson Mohawke). also spoiling who's going to be in the nightclub credits sequence is not as bad as spoiling a pseudo-Bowie cameo.

flappy bird, Monday, 14 August 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

and yeah, who is the story for? La Bateau Ivre otm, it's a useless story

my b

flappy bird, Monday, 14 August 2017 17:03 (six years ago) link

it's weird bc i spoiled that particular scene for myself by accidentally reading a synopsis of episode 14 when it leaked last week

anyway i know my extremely spoiler-neutral stance is super unpopular so i'll back down

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 14 August 2017 17:05 (six years ago) link

imo "spoiler" means revealing some sort of plot revelation before people may have seen it, but I guess if you want to be pedantic it could mean revealing anything at all

mh, Monday, 14 August 2017 17:11 (six years ago) link

also i feel bad about describing the context and spoiling it further so i'm sorry adam (but regardless there's more to it than i described and you will still be surprised imo!)

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 14 August 2017 17:27 (six years ago) link

way to spoil that there's more to it!!!

that Bowie/TP thing is some pretty gutsy clickbait. total non-story. 25 year old movie footage of dead pop star shows up in new TV show for a few seconds, whoooaaa.

circa1916, Monday, 14 August 2017 17:38 (six years ago) link

Did they do a story back when that character on Veronica Mars got a Pitchfork internship?

President Keyes, Monday, 14 August 2017 17:52 (six years ago) link

There is at least one Pitchfork review from the mid-2000s with the Veronica Mars' characters' name as the writer.

every day leor galil's little chicago reader piece on pitchfork and tv from earlier this summer feels like it gets more and more prescient (and seems like it ought to get expanded on/investigated further)

no prob! to be honest i was just kind of joshing cos i was so pissed at pitchfork. i went on the site sunday night and it was right there on the front page.

(but regardless there's more to it than i described and you will still be surprised imo!)

holy shit all episode was like this! i really loved the callback it was both literally "in memory" of Bowie and giving him props for being (in this case) 25 years ahead of his time =)

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 16 August 2017 13:00 (six years ago) link

I'm pissed that p4k spoiled Trump's press conference. Guess I'll delete it from my DVR now

...

Hmm? Oh right, um... some people that are musicians probably watched it too.

their review of the new Cars reissue prompted me to see what they said about their debut. didn't even need the wayback machine for this one:
