I might have mentioned it upthread, but I've been carrying a similar device. different approach, but both of them are super useful.

Any opinion on this?

http://www.southamptonpedals.com/utility-knife.html

I don't have a lot of space on my board at present, so I generally have a "weird" slot that I rotate various pedals through (phasers, flangers, envelope mods, autowah). One pedal that does four things seems like it would be very useful for me, as I would only use one of these effects per song.

But it might not be worth it as I don't generally use chorus or tremolo. So the phaser and flanger would need to be extremely tasty.

That's funny. I was looking into one of these the other day:

So, in the past little while, I've decided that the Jaguar was not really what I wanted. So, I returned it. Much rather just keep my Telecaster and explore more pedals.

I wanted the Wampler Ethereal. Bad. So, I just went for it. What a great reverb sound. But damn. The delay repeats drop off in volume so significantly and so quickly, even with the "Delay Mix" knob maxed, it was useless when you put anything besides a booster in front of it. And, even with the on-board reverb past about ten o'clock, it drowned out the delay repeats. It's a very good soundscaping box, but, as far as the delay side goes, pretty disappointing because of how quiet it is. So I returned it.

With what I've returned to Guitar Center, I was able to get:

Earthquaker Devices Levitation Reverb
Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo Reverb
Catalinbread Karma Suture Distortion/Fuzz (the pink one)
Catalinbread Adineko Oil Can Delay

I'm still waiting on the Ghost Echo, but all the others are super dope. The Karma Suture pushed the Fulltone Plimsoul out of my chain as my main disto tone. It's a really full-bodied distortion and it's not just a Big Muff soundalike, which is a big plus (and my main beef with other fuzz boxes). The Levitation is such a great, eerie reverb sound. One of the more unique reverbs I think I've ever heard. The Adineko can get into some wackiness, but it also has kind of a "spooky" sound at more basic settings that compliments the Levitation perfectly. I've stopped relying so much on my loop station with so much reverb going in the mix, but I'm also a lot more prone to just sit and play uninterrupted for ninety minutes or more these days.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 31 July 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

to be fair guitars are dumb too

i don't really have a ton of pedals (maybe 6-7?) but i'm tired of most of them. i like my xotic ep but that's an "always on" pedal for me so it's not fun or anything. i like the sound of my zvex mastotron but i've been playing with some dudes lately instead of just in my room by myself and now i'm annoyed that even turned up all the way it cuts my volume down. the rest of them i'm bored of.

na (NA), Monday, 31 July 2017 20:02 (six years ago) link

I try to stay at 8 pedals max for normal operations. This has grown complicated because I want to accommodate bass, guitar, mandolin, and electronic drums. I do not wish to haul multiple amps around, so I have taken to running everything into a keyboard amp/mini PA.

Current borad solution is two separate paths: one for bass (compression > autowah > Para Driver Sansamp) and one for guitar/mando (tuner > drive > phase > delay > Blonde Sansamp). Either chain can run direct if needed.

https://i.redd.it/dipj7eabalcz.jpg

The guitar chain makes a weirdly-proportioned L (from lower right to upper left) and the bass chain occupies the negative space left by the L.

christ that's a monster. ambient/shoegaze band? ever stack reverbs?

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 31 July 2017 23:03 (six years ago) link

Yes, all the damn time. The Wampler and Keeley reverbs are pretty much on 98% of the time (granted, on fairly conservative settings, but on nonetheless).

I'm strictly a sit in front of my amp twiddling knobs on my bedroom floor player.

Do you have the original power supply? It does output 1300 mA, but I don't think that's all necessary.

Before you order anything, try it alone with the onespot and see what happens.

― jjjusten, Wednesday, July 26, 2017 11:17 PM (six days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Nope, it came without the power supply (thought that would be ok because I have the onespot). I unplugged the other pedals from the onespot, no luck though. I assume ebay is my best bet for a power supply?

If you're running a LOT of pedals, consider Walrus Audio's Phoenix https://www.walrusaudio.com/products/phoenix-15-output-power-supply-120v-230v-1

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 2 August 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

Ottobit Jr is intriguing, I splurged on the OTO Biscuit which it clearly comps a lot from though, so not sure if I'd need both...

Just purchased one of these, apparently it's *finally* a fully fledged Max/MSP system in a pedal format, among lots of open source pedal models. Happy that you can add any MIDI controller to it and freely assign any parameter.

That thing looks amazing! Not cheap though.

And yeah, I don't think the Ottobit Jr is gonna add too much if you have an OTO Biscuit unless you really want another flavor of the same idea.

So, the Ghost Echo is a really nice reverb. It has a fullness and warmth to it that I was not expecting at all. It's also a really loud reverb, which was also unexpected, as I've actually noticed a slight volume drop whenever I turn the Afterneath on. For three reverb boxes by the same company, the Ghost Echo, Afterneath, and Levitation cover a lot of sonic ground.

Also, I finally caved and started checking out reddit and discovered the Let's Trade Pedals sub, so I was able to acquire yet another reverb box. This time, the Supermoon by Mr. Black. It's a very modulated reverb. Although, the base effect with the least amount of modulation is really distinct from other reverbs on the market. I can't really liken it to any other pre-established reverb sounds. It's definitely a pedal from the Pacific Northwest, as its sound reminds me very much of those days when I would wake up to the rain just starting to break up after a night of downpour. Those misty, greyish mornings with the smell of wet earth just dominating everything. Very cool sound.

Whammy update: I got a Digitech power supply on ebay and it works like a charm! So far it's been really good for tape slowdown/vinyl stop type effects.

I got a DOD Carcosa fuzz, it's pretty cool for a sub-$100 fuzz. I can't get a handle on the glitchy sounds (there's in and out knobs that when you turn them different directions it does crazy stuff) but as a regular fuzz it's awesome.

louie mensch (milo z), Friday, 11 August 2017 03:48 (six years ago) link

Are you talking about the after and before knobs? The before is a gain control, and the after is actually a bias control (weird labeling I know). 10-2 on the after knob is sorta standard fuzz, past 2 gets into splatter territory, and below 10 tends to do some low gain murky dark fuzz textures. Maybe that helps? Love that pedal btw.

jjjusten, Friday, 11 August 2017 04:27 (six years ago) link

Oops, yeah - before/after. I think I wound up with both around 10 tonight playing around, worked great with Jazzmaster pickups.

how's life, Friday, 11 August 2017 09:58 (six years ago) link

I was out of the way about a month ago and stopped into a Guitar Center a few cities over to check out the used gear and I happened upon a used Keeley stomp box for less than $100, so I bought it very impulsively. It was the Dyno My Roto three mode modulation effect. I knew nothing about it, but was interested in trying out a different flanger after I got rid of my old Boss BF-2.

It has a Tri-Chorus that's super smooth. Would probably be my favorite setting on the pedal if I didn't have my Boss Waza Chorus. The Rotary mode is weird, but also kind of cool. I would probably stick with that one if I didn't rebuy the MXR Phase 95 (more on that in a minute). The Rotoflange mode is surprisingly subtle when you dial it back (it can definitely get into the ridiculous swooshy nonsense that I hate if you go far enough clockwise with all the knobs). The thing that I didn't like about the BF-2 was that I could never find a good balance between subtle flange and full-on WHOOSH. The Dyno My Roto is able to get there, so I'm happy.

I am not a smart person. This has been pretty much confirmed since my teenage years. In any case, even though I was crazy about the Phase 95 when it was new, I didn't keep it for some reason. I guess we'll call it "The Great Modulation Defection of 2016" in which I decided I hated 95% of modulation pedals and responded accordingly (all the while, considering my previously established stupidity) and traded all except my Waza Chorus in. So, in any case, I reacquired the Phase 95 this past week and, joining forces with the Dyno My Roto, I've been able to get back to some really dreamy sounds that I was missing out on.

I think, unless Boss wises up and does a Waza Flanger that incorporates the HF-2 Hi-Band Flanger into it, I'm pretty happy with the Keeley for now. And the Phase 95 in 45+Script mode on a slow rate is just damn euphoric paired with the Adineko.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Sunday, 13 August 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

Self-promotion creeps me out but

There's a Eclipse on Monday (you might have heard abt this). I'm going to announce 10% off everything in my store. As an extended celebration, I want to thank all of you for giving me heads up on cool shit I now stock and tons of other feedback. The minimum is a 10% discount, but expect more. Shipping at cost. Hit me up, friends. I am going to cut this off after Monday, because I'm expecting shit to go crazy. I'll ship as fast as I can, but it might take a day or two depending on how nuts this gets.

For a (somewhat inaccurate) list of my stock, go here. If you don't see it, ask.

Define "good"

Idiot Box D4 has a really unique sound that's difficult to explain but is organic and smooth like pretty much no other.

Death Metal Distortion is a classic but I always think it's more like a 3 band eq that also clips like crazy.

Rocktron Silver Dragon is tremendous with guitar but useless with everything else.

Nine of Swords Funeral Party is a superb lofi grind/crust box.

Danelectro Black Liquorice is much better than you'd think, as is the Black Coffee.

All distortion pedals sound better with a Greasy Tool in the chain imo.

As an admirer of pedals and an observer of other people's use of them, I feel like the Rat still has something to offer. Personally I am less fond of Tube Screamers, but there are so many flavors of TS out there that maybe there is one for you.

As a guitar player I rarely have a pure distortion pedal on the board - I have a couple ways of getting to overdrive and to direct amp crunch, and that's usually all the dirt I need.

Happy to see the Danelectros getting some love from aldo; I have a bunch of el cheapo Fab pedals that I still like.

Each of us faces a clear moral choice. (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 19 September 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

i've been through a ton of distortion pedals and tbh the one you'd have to pry from my cold dead hands is my whiteface Rat reissue
