This was sort of prompted by a radio special I d/l a couple days ago, from Pirate Cat radio.

Still, if I could vote for the 12" version of "Memories", i'd possibly.. vote Swan Lake anyway.

gotta be poptones

I clicked on this thinking "what? Mark G. likes metal now?"

He grew up on Saxon

Actually, this thread reminded me: I need to get a pole for the back garden to tie the other end of a washing line to.

But what is such a thing called? "Washing line pole" you might think, but nothing on the B&Q Website, or the Homebase one, no.

"Poptones" without a moment's hesitation.

I don't know why I never listen to this album anymore. I've always found Poptones & Careering to be very difficult to choose between. For some reason I thought we might have done this before, but a quick half-assed search didn't bring up anything.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

i have no idea what this poll is about

I listen to it as a whole, if I ever listen to it, but my favorite moment is the treble-bass shift in "Memories," so that.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 06:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, that was quite appealing at the time, but I have to say I do prefer the 'not-edited-together' version that is the single.

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 06:44 (fourteen years ago) link

how could this be anything but poptonessssss

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 06:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Thought processes while reading the poll choices (total running time: 10 seconds):

"I've never heard of any of these metal bands."

"Hey wait! Radio 4? Aren't they that Aughties post-punk band?"

"Oh! Metal BOX (aka Second Edition) by PiL!" Silly Mark G!

P.S. Is anyone's Metal Box rusting as badly as mine?

And I had to look this up:

MOB POLL FEEL HATE

"mob... war... feel... hate" is the chant in "Chant."

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 07:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I appreciate the effort.

And this is why you fail.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 11:42 (fourteen years ago) link

OK sped through this again and I gotta ask: has anyone ever commented on how well much of this album works as stripper music? Seriously. "Albatross," "Graveyard," and even "Poptones" could signal "decadent urban club life" in a cautionary thriller if they haven't been used as such in a film already (does anyone know?).

Anyhoo, I like this album a lot (and I hate to be a vinyl snob but the 12"s in Metal Box really give off the most heat) but the whole would be strengthened without some of the lesser tracks. "The Suit" is a bit silly but "No Birds" and "Bad Baby" are just bad. And "Radio 4" is more a conceptual pleasure for me than anything. I'm going with "Graveyard" because hopefully this poll will force me to remember its title once and for all.

That moment is the making of "Memories" (hmmm) as well as one of my fave pieces by Lester Bangs. So I'd be very interested to hear how the song works without it.

Is anyone's Metal Box rusting as badly as mine?

I was serious about this btw. The box itself is experiencing massive corrosion. Part of the point, now that I think of it.

I'd have voted for Suit! First song I ever heard that was all bass. One of the rock songs that made dub make sense to me.

I'm surprised no-one likes "Bad Baby"

Mark G, Friday, 15 May 2009 09:32 (fourteen years ago) link

.. although only in JR's head would 10:30 be considered 'rising early'

Mark G, Friday, 15 May 2009 09:33 (fourteen years ago) link

would have voted 'death disco' for old time's sake, but im happy to let this one rust.

Love "Bad Baby." I don't skip anything on this...
