Christ, you all sound like "the simpsons went to shit after season 8!" nerds.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:51 (six years ago) link

i still like the show, but it's felt different since they left the books behind

Many men scream death (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:54 (six years ago) link

best way for this show to end would just be the white walkers inexorably marching forward, destroying everything, thanks for watching!

sean bean wakes up in bed with suzanne pleshette

many of the setpieces were excellent imo but i prob agree with this - maybe it's the volume of characters but the show can't seem to stop these total clunker episodes where characters just pop up like puppet versions of themselves to get us from one week to the next minus any actual event. don't mean a battle or whatever, just like anything that might move beyond the show's deep and fearful stasis.

or literally sit around a table and talk about how bored they are with each other (tyrion, grey worm and whatsherface multiple times)

Yeah that storyline last season was dire.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 23:43 (six years ago) link

i think what i figured out is that if u spend yr first 7 seasons telegraphing the ending to me once we get there i'm not going to care much about seeing it play out

Mordy, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 00:18 (six years ago) link

i finally watched the second episode. localgarda sums up my feelings well upthread. lol at the giant fucking crossbow, i mean sad lol. i don't spend much time worrying about what's in the books and what isn't since i haven't read any of them, but that was one point where i was like "this must be something they made up on their own because this is incredibly stupid"

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 02:17 (six years ago) link

also, let's say you have a giant fossil/skeleton of a legendary, historical dragon hidden in beneath your castle. then your trusted advisor reveals the ultimate secret - it is possible to shoot at a giant dragon with a giant fucking crossbow. you smirk. then you test out the crossbow ON THE PRICELESS DRAGON SKELETON. what the fuck was that cersei?!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 02:19 (six years ago) link

this might have been discussed upthread, but did all the dorne sisters die? please, please, please, please. i was fist pumping my way through that battle

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 02:19 (six years ago) link

i like GoT though

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 02:20 (six years ago) link

they took the cool horn from the books and made it crossbow with the orange rubber suction cup

, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 03:01 (six years ago) link

also i like to imagine that for all of euron's scenes there some guy piloting a drone that's 1,000 feet away so euron can look at it and maintain his mad distant eye stare

but did all the dorne sisters die? please, please, please, please.

Aw, but one of the sand snakes was lovely Tyene? And maybe still alive?

Eallach mhór an duine leisg (dowd), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 05:40 (six years ago) link

I can't express how much I dislike Euron. Acting wise, I mean - obviously as a character he's a bastard, but he's just the worst character. The Iron Isles were a mistake.

Eallach mhór an duine leisg (dowd), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 05:42 (six years ago) link

the unsullied are gonna invade casterly rock next week, that should be cool to see

Dunno how they're going to do this given that we don't know anyone on the inside of Casterly Rock and we only know one of the Unsullied and no one gives a shit about him.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 10:22 (six years ago) link

nxd, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 10:28 (six years ago) link

Also, I don't think the Unsullied can take Casterly Rock without Dragons. Even with Dragons, I'm not sure, it wasn't taken during Aegon's conquest. The whole thing is rather stupid.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 10:36 (six years ago) link

How are the Unsullied getting to Casterly Rock (as it's on the West coast of Westeros whereas Dragonstone is off the Eastern one)?

groovypanda, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 11:19 (six years ago) link

The answer would've been "using Yara's fleet" but now I'm not sure what the answer is.

Movie magic?

Many men scream death (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 11:54 (six years ago) link

tyrion will def be there which will be the character focus. as for how it happens, in the books they talk a lot about how tyrion was in charge of the sewers at the rock and even tho they've already had one city taken that way i wouldn't be surprised if that was the direction they went again. and yeah they will suddenly just be there.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 12:01 (six years ago) link

fairly sure there was a grey worm looks at secret cave bit in one of the trailers

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 12:18 (six years ago) link

They have like 12 episodes to fit in probably 4 or 5 more wars. I don't really care at this point about mph realism.

President Keyes, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 12:23 (six years ago) link

Well, the writers seem to feel the same way.

Eallach mhór an duine leisg (dowd), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 12:26 (six years ago) link

Thank god

President Keyes, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 12:26 (six years ago) link

The only way I'll watch this again is if someone tells me they launch Tyrion onto the back of a dragon with a giant crossbow.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 14:35 (six years ago) link

i was thinking they'll find some way to put the mountain on the crossbow bolt and get him on the back of one of the dragons. because that would be epic win

i'd love if they'd showed the r&d meetings in which westeros's greatest minds decided on "a crossbow, but bigger"

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

dunno what was funnier, the stupid crossbow or the maester saying "we noticed that arrows pierced the dragon before, so that got us thinking"

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link

The way the crossbow was presented was dumb, but it would have annoyed me way more if dragons were basically invincible and required some sort of magic to take down. I like that they are just going to throw a bunch of huge bolts (I assume that they are going to build hundreds of these) at the dragons and probably succeed in taking at least one down.

It's weird though that the ballista is only now being invented in Westeros.

silverfish, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 15:17 (six years ago) link

yeah i mean they had catapults of a type during blackwater bay, right?

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 15:32 (six years ago) link

well I mean, regular crossbows seam to be pretty common, it seems very unlikely that nobody ever thought about making a really big one for attacking castles, ships, etc.

anyway, now reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballista because I am a nerd

silverfish, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 15:53 (six years ago) link

they'll be alright if they aim at the flashing red spot on the dragon's back

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 16:25 (six years ago) link

I think you all are being too dismissive about the giant crossbow. Like it was only fairly recently that the people at Kings Landing realized that dragons actually exist.

Now think about the ways they know to kill people and things:
there's strangulation (how would this be accomplished? a giant lasso? a triangulated lasso attack?),
falling from high places (dragons can fly),
poison (how to apply? would it work?),
bludgeoning (would require the attacker to be airborne, or managing to capture the dragon at rest and avoiding being burned to death while bludgeoning),
burning (dragon's are fire resistant),
and stabbing.

A giant stabbing implement that could be engineered to be airborne, seems like an intelligent choice.

sarahell, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 22:21 (six years ago) link

Of possible interest, Jaime is the only Lannister we've seen use a weapon other than a crossbow (or a shield, as a bludgeon) to this point.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 23:17 (six years ago) link

xp: Also for poison, a giant poison-containing spear.

But a huge crossbow could be effective for attacking ships from the land.

nickn, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 23:25 (six years ago) link

i don't think anyone's saying it's a bad idea, just that it didn't warrant a scene worth of buildup about the weapon that the finest minds in westeros have been working on.

oiocha, Thursday, 27 July 2017 00:08 (six years ago) link

Actually it can be viewed as 4lulz that one scene is "what are you going to do about DRAGONNZ?" which is followed by "my lady, you see... it's a really big... crossbow"

El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 July 2017 01:20 (six years ago) link

i would grudgingly laugh if when the crossbow is finally wheeled out and fired the shot misses widely, after which the dragon flies over and roasts the crossbow

Many men scream death (voodoo chili), Thursday, 27 July 2017 02:08 (six years ago) link

LocalGarda's take on the last episode super OTM. The Big Crossbow reveal and then casually shooting into a priceless artifact was ridiculous. Though I guess the latter can be spun into "fuck the past". IDK, never been super in love with this show, but it remains entertaining and I'm not particularly angry about the way it's going. It's fun.

circa1916, Thursday, 27 July 2017 02:41 (six years ago) link

I dont think the Lannisters care about those dragon skulls anyway do they? "These were Roberts" she said really dismissively like that was his pool room or something.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 27 July 2017 03:12 (six years ago) link

on the contrary they hate them no doubt.

dan selzer, Thursday, 27 July 2017 03:53 (six years ago) link

okay, so assuming you live in Medieval Westeros, what weapon would you invent to take out an airborne dragon?
