So I was confused by the ending. When Theon is in the water, that wasnt Yara, hanging from a ship's prow, above him? Someone upthread implied Yara and Ellaria are kidnapped, not dead. The melee made it really messy to work out.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 01:43 (six years ago) link

i thought that was Yara hanging from the ship, but was also confused that there wasn't like a confirmatory close-up of her face

gbx, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 01:44 (six years ago) link

body hanging there was wearing her clothes, so

that wasn't yara hanging

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 02:10 (six years ago) link

yeah it was confusing.. I'm of the mind that Yara and Ellaria got captured and two sand snakes got killed...?

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 02:23 (six years ago) link

I thought it was Yara hanging, but it was ambiguous.

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 02:31 (six years ago) link

It was the two dead sand snakes, I'm fairly certain.

I still really enjoy the show and like a lot of the changes from the books, but boy howdy did they fuck up the Dorne storyline. They might have been better off leaving it out entirely

Many men scream death (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 02:32 (six years ago) link

Yara, Ellaria and (I thought) the Snake that was below protecting Ellaria are alive at the end of the ep. The two on the prow were Obara (impaled, alas Whale Rider!) and the Snake with the whip (who was dangling), both of whom died on the deck.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 02:35 (six years ago) link

it says something about the nature of the scene (and the show atm) that i don't really care that much who died and who didn't die and who's gonna show up later

Its more that these are all tertiary characters at best who need to be culled before the characters we really care about start wrapping their arcs

*it's

Many men scream death (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 02:54 (six years ago) link

I mean, sure, but do they need to be dead to just leave them behind? Wait what am I asking, this is GoT.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 03:21 (six years ago) link

those were the two sand snakes on the prow. they were wearing sand snake clothes. one was hanging from her own whip. one was impaled on her own spear.

nomar, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 03:28 (six years ago) link

Yeah when put like that it makes sense.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link

Having watched this episode I'm not convinced that being flayed alive is really a price worth paying for another crack at getting out of the friendzone.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 09:54 (six years ago) link

esp considering by the time he gets back Jon and Dany will be at it for sure

randall tarly was great in this ep i thought. he's samwell's daddy right?

, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 11:49 (six years ago) link

Yep. And the kid is the reason he sent Sam to the wall, to get him out of the line of succession.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 12:02 (six years ago) link

You guys Samwell's brother is named Dickon. DICKON.

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 12:57 (six years ago) link

speaking of sea battles, isn't dickon ("...dickon...?") the guy with the crazy arms from black sails?

I did laugh at that. I'm

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 13:24 (six years ago) link

this i far and way the most avidly I've watched a show that p much blows

Hadrian VIII, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 15:13 (six years ago) link

close, i would counter with the last few seasons of mad men

I think the show has entered into dumb action territory, but that's fine, it had to at some point. The sea fight scene was very impressive.

also unsullied sex with incredibly hot woman whose name I can't remember was cool

akm, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 16:59 (six years ago) link

i still think that the show is good, but i agree with everyone that it's been a lot more fan-servicey with payoffs that feel less earned since they passed the books

there are still things this show does that nothing else on TV can touch, but it would be cool if they did them more than once or twice per season

Many men scream death (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 17:11 (six years ago) link

re: sea fight, we didn't even really see any kind of naval battle! just arrrgh viking pirates boarding, matey
re: sullied unsullied, i was just thinking man, we have 420 minutes of screen time this season and this is what we're doing

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:00 (six years ago) link

the frame rate was all weird/messed up during the sea fight or was that just me?

, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

it's cool that they had sex and all but Grey Worm and Missandei really are an excruciatingly boring pair. I guess he's dying in the next couple of episodes though

Number None, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:16 (six years ago) link

maybe they were doing a bit of the post-saving private ryan/"heat of the battle" trick of editing out every other frame?

nomar, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:16 (six years ago) link

yeah it looked kind of sped up and jittery. I thought it was horribly shot tbh

Number None, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 18:17 (six years ago) link

also unsullied sex with incredibly hot woman whose name I can't remember was cool

She is beautiful but always has the same concerned "I'm acting!" look on her face which drives me nuts.

I've been told many times I look like Reek. Never watched this show but take it that's not a great thing?

are you missing a penis?

at least your name isn't reek

it's weird people would say Reek and not Theon Greyjoy.

Theon "Reeky McNoDick" Greyjoy

Dickon Tarly's brother, Dickoff

whenever i see a Game of Thrones piece on Gizmodo from Rob Bricken i wonder if it's a nom de plume inspired by the legit Stark boys.

xp - waiting for Dickon to meet up with Theon (same joke)

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link

i thought this was up there with the worst episodes in the entire seven seasons. firstly, because it seems they're going to pause the plot, stretch out boring scenes, have interlude events etc etc. secondly, anytime anyone from dorne is on screen it is just like new adventures of hercules. thirdly, it generally felt like new adventures of hercules. fourthly, the terrible weirdly framed sea battle which felt like it had been condensed beyond all possible intelligibility, needless hot pie/wolf scene. the wastefulness of plot in this show is beyond belief - not surprising tho, they obv have to do their eight seasons to ensure everyone involved is a multi-millionaire but of any big tv series in recent memory this is the one that least merits that much airtime. for the amount of plot and the ridiculous stretching they do, it prob could have had 4/5 seasons comfortably ended everything. i enjoyed last week's ep but it would be a very familiar pattern for the first ep of a season to be good and then 7/8 shit/nothing happens episodes before a final duo that advance the plot.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:07 (six years ago) link

like when this show is good it's good in the way a blockbuster movie can be good, when it's bad it's just a bunch of people talking deeply involved meta rubbish.

the crossbow scene was ludicrous. like "i've hatched a really clever plan to deal with these dragons. the greatest minds have built... a fucking huge crossbow"

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:09 (six years ago) link

I liked hotpie/wolfpack and would not have wanted to lose it for more plot hits

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:11 (six years ago) link

i understand the value of some exploration of the various characters or whatever but this ep repeatedly gave me this feeling of "why am i watching this"

and like surprise surprise there's a good argument for dany not attacking king's landing. "a season and a half could die if you move this quickly my queen"

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:16 (six years ago) link

I was unhappy that Surviving Sand Snake had grown her hair. Felt out of character. Nice hair though it was.

nashwan, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

local garda otm in pretty much every point
i've said it before but when you bring back jon you jump the shark. even grmm hasn't figured out how to fix it yet!
