Front 242 are awesome live. I saw them at Primavera last month and they certainly know how to put on a show

i keep thinking of "seconds to late" by cabaret voltaire

brimstead, Monday, 24 July 2017 19:43 (six years ago) link

i saw F242 during their prime era, and it was insanely good.
the breakdown to the loud vocal declaration of 'no sex until marriage' was insane.
back to the thread : i realise they are not loved by many here, but some of the early CHAKK 12" releases were totally in this groove.

I feel like Sherwood is really a nexus for a lot of this stuff. He produced Twitch and parts of Pretty Hate Machine, his Depeche Mode remixes were really influential, and apparently a lot of the classic drum sounds came off his Fairlight.

perhaps the epitome of AMS vs this groove :

^^^ yes

OTM, can't say enough good things about that album

not really AWIF though

sleeve, Monday, 24 July 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

not really AWIF though

!!!

blimey.
its very angry politically, and very funky.

mark e, Monday, 24 July 2017 20:00 (six years ago) link

ok, maybe not industrial per se.

mark e, Monday, 24 July 2017 20:01 (six years ago) link

Tribal industrial rite? Uncarved Block fans oughta check out last decade's debut by Von Spar if they haven't already:

bet i never find that in my local hmv/fopp.

mark e, Monday, 24 July 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

not very white or industrial, though

(note: this is one of my favorite records of all time)

sleeve, Monday, 24 July 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

There's a refrain on Uncarved Block of "I don't feel angry anymore", though I don't know if I buy the sentiment!

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Monday, 24 July 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

ha, agreed

sleeve, Monday, 24 July 2017 20:22 (six years ago) link

ok ... to get the thread back on track

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbwhhQei3gU

very angry, very political, very white.
as stirmonster has already mentioned, but here is an example.

oh my god, this Von Spar track

this iphone speaks many languages (DJP), Monday, 24 July 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

gosh. that von spar is way, way better than i remember it being. must dig that out. also, uncarved block rules, forever.

I would like to thank everyone who has participated in this thread from the bottom of my heart. This style of music is near and dear to my heart, possibly as close to a "default" musical style for me as it's possible for me to have, and I love that others are into it as well and throwing out names I've either meant to get up on but never got around to or have never heard before. The names I know well are all welcome reminders for things I've neglected, in some cases for close to 20 years (that's the last time I remember listening to Test Dept). Thanks for indulging my nostalgia fit and spurring me to explore some stuff.

I don't like everything on this list of new EBM albums, but the first two are great, especially Multiple Man.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 24 July 2017 21:03 (six years ago) link

I keep going "Oh yeah, Test Department too!" with each name check. I listened to this stuff way more than I realized. Though I've really enjoyed the Sherwood comps from the last few years, which introduce still more acts I wasn't familiar with.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Monday, 24 July 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

I agree Sherwood is a nexus point here; discovering him in high school was a crystallizing moment for my musical tastes.

And yet there's still no CD compilation of all the early Tackhead and Gary Clail 12" singles (the full versions, not the edits on Tackhead Tape Time)...

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 24 July 2017 21:07 (six years ago) link

ahh, that's the best hug i have had all year, even if it is virtual.

now, just where are those KMFM vs On-U remixes ...

(answer : UAIOE = their hard edged On-U based album)

mark e, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:08 (six years ago) link

you need to get the TACK>>HEAD POWER INC compilations volumes 1-3.

not got all of the 12" you are after, but the best option availalble.

happy to have contributed.

i used to love those KMFDM sherwood records big time but now find my ears feel those have dated the worst out of nearly all sherwood's work. the pankow ones still sound good.

did anyone mention Pankow yet btw?

stirmonster, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:30 (six years ago) link

coming at this from another angle you could definitely make a case for the inclusion of certain big black songs - kerosene most obviously, but also this:

only got the cd edition of the album a couple of years ago, and rarely listen, so not burnt out.
but yeah, KMFDM vs Cheese is a problem i always suffer from whenever i drop them on the playlist.

mark e, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:34 (six years ago) link

i did dig out this super stoopid non sherwood KMFDM track recently and enjoyed it lots though - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Lm4XQczY4

definitely high on the cod funk scale.

stirmonster, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

weirdo text formatting going on there!

stirmonster, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:38 (six years ago) link

I've come to the conclusion that Don't Blow Your Top is KMFDM's perfect moment, although I hadn't heard "Zip" before and it's low-key glorious.

Hula also. The mellow side of this look was this timeless (lol or very dated) jam

Didn't know Graham Lewis had his own weird-ass synth pop project. He is one intense guy. Cool art direction for the video!

I thought it had a better hit/miss ratio than Colin Newman's solo work, when I discovered it in the early 90s, but I favored Lewis Wire over Newman Wire (and Lennon over McCartney). With all the ex-Wire solo/duo material, I think some QC would have improved the consumer experience.

in '85 my girlfriend and I drove into LA to try to get into the Test Department show at Club Lingerie, which was 21+; I was 17, she was 19. we didn't get in, so we walked around H'wood smoking cigarettes. I sometimes wonder: if you'd seen that show, on that night, how heavily might it have impacted your taste? because I bet it was fuckin slammin
