He kinda looks like a young Oliver Reed though and is basically the new Ramsay so it's all good.

Jon Snow send ravens with news of the white walkers when he came back to Castle Black, so everyone should know. I think they just didn't believe him.

How could I forget the scene when Cersei pulled out of the Winterfell accord?

still, a bit odd that anyone could just waltz on in and see the big board.

I figured there was maybe a small garrison/skeleton staff who understandably fled at first sight of big fuck off warfleet plus dragons.

chap, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 15:16 (six years ago) link

Stannis took his entire family with him, though; the former residents would have been wiped out in Robert's Rebellion, and Melisandre had burned all the non-believers; I think it's fair to say Dragonstone was completely abandoned. I think Dany herself is the last living person with ties to the place.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 15:35 (six years ago) link

It's not entirely logical though. George RR Martin also made sure to have a subplot explaining what happened with Dragonstone afterwards, so it's not unnatural to wonder why it wasn't garrisoned.

Silent alarm went off when they opened the gate. Security firm will show up to check it out within 8 months.

President Keyes, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

I liked the episode a lot but the contrast between how much I get out of this and how much I get out of the new twin peaks is sorta glaring and damning. In previous seasons of GOT there hasn't been another show to put it into the shade to such an extent

― or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 18 July 2017 14:56

The show is still good, though now that they've moved away from the books it's full of fan-service stuff--Arya kills the RW perps, zombie giants, more flirting between the redhead and Brienne, bad guys become cuddly, Sansa throws shade at Littlefinger, Ed Sheeran drops by Boss Hog's club to sing a song. Surely Gendry's boat will show up soon.

― President Keyes, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 14:56

I'm A LOT less pumped for Game Of Thrones but my loving of Twin Peaks doesn't have much to do with it. How many other expensive tv shows would be allowed that kind of unique vision?

I think Keyes is right. This show is just going to get more pandering, even if they removed all the sex and nudity.

Varys has got a great tan hanging out with Dany and all on their voyage over.

With sparing Umber Girl and Karstark Boy, Jon is making sort of the same mistake as he did before when he was Lord Commander -- i.e. allying with a despised people over the objections of the rest of the existing power structure -- though obviously he's not going to get Julius Caesared for it this time.

Leee Media Naranja (Leee), Tuesday, 18 July 2017 17:02 (six years ago) link

i don't think there's enough time for much in the way of machinations and loyalty-switching at this stage of the game, it seems to be like the rest of it will be a pretty straightforward run: finishing off the conflicts south of the wall, uneasy alliances in order to defeat the Night King's army of the undead after that. my only theory is that at some point next season Cersei will become the Night Queen, just a full evil power-up. But that might be too ridiculous...maybe.

Finding it odd that they would put any recognisable actors in what was ostensibly an Ed Sheehan cameo. Is even a very small bit part in GOT a step towards Hollywood from Shane Meadows TV or something?

Quite enjoyed that episode so looking forward to seeing the rest of the season.

the story kinda requires shady ass littlefinger to take the vale's army to help out circei, otherwise dany's just gonna steamroll everyone

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 18 July 2017 20:00 (six years ago) link

I mean, Sansa's due an "I told you so" moment at some point.

But I can't see tactically how dany's forces won't steamroll everyone: she's got infantry, cavalry, navy, and a fucking air battle. I don't think any of these medieval people have any idea how to fight an air battle.

sarahell, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link

yeah but the ice zombies will join with jon's army once Bran works out he can control them. and then we get dragons vs zombies ending in Jon and Dany reconciling and snogging and then dying tragically. and then everyone agrees Sam Tarly should be the one king to rule them all because Sam = GRRM

Turgoose hasn't made much of an impact outside of his work with Meadows, and he's also not a very good actor. I'm pretty sure he's just paying the bills

HBO ANNOUNCES CONFEDERATE, A NEW DRAMA SERIES CREATED BY DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS
Series Will Be Executive Produced And Written By David Benioff And D.B. Weiss; Nichelle Tramble Spellman, Malcolm Spellman, Carolyn Strauss And Bernadette Caulfield Will Also Executive Produce

“Game of Thrones” creators/showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will return to HBO with their new original series CONFEDERATE, it was announced today by Casey Bloys, president, HBO Programming.

CONFEDERATE chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone — freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.

“As the brilliant ‘Game of Thrones’ winds down to its final season, we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Dan and David, knowing that any subject they take on will result in a unique and ambitious series,” said Bloys. “Their intelligent, wry and visually stunning approach to storytelling has a way of engaging an audience and taking them on an unforgettable journey. CONFEDERATE promises to be no exception, and we are honored to be adding the talented team of Nichelle and Malcolm Spellman to the mix.”

“We have discussed CONFEDERATE for years, originally as a concept for a feature film,” add Benioff and Weiss. “But our experience on ‘Thrones’ has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO. There won’t be dragons or White Walkers in this series, but we are creating a world, and we couldn’t imagine better partners in world-building than Nichelle and Malcolm, who have impressed us for a long time with their wit, their imagination and their Scrabble-playing skills.”

CONFEDERATE will be written and created by Benioff and Weiss, who will also serve as showrunners on the series. Partnering with them as executive producers and writers on the series will be Nichelle Tramble Spellman (“Justified,” “The Good Wife”) and Malcolm Spellman (“Empire,” the forthcoming “Foxy Brown”). Carolyn Strauss (“Game of Thrones”) and Bernadette Caulfield (“Game of Thrones,” “Big Love”) will also join as executive producers.
Production will begin following the final season of “Game of Thrones.”

Yes to these, but since the whole ep1 was basically showing us where everyone is on the map--including showing us a bunch of actual maps--it served as an excuse for Arya to say "I'm headin' on down to King's Landing." Made for a better scene than telling the girl she spared at the poisoning something like "Tell them what you seen here, and now I'm off to King's Landing!"
