Otherwise, best episode in a mighty long time.

That was some good television

I suspect that I've never wanted to be anybody more than you-know-who in that cold open

puking guy #12? i've been that guy, it was awful

Wait Ed Sheeran is in this? Bloody hell.

The cold open was so good.

they were definitely getting ready to do things, though. definitely setting the table for things to happen

putting the pieces back on the table, like they literally did in the last scene

good ep but I cringed hard at "we never did talk about Tommen" or w/ever, there must have been a thousand more graceful ways to introduce that subject

Pilous Asbæk is so bad at this.

Frederik B, Monday, 17 July 2017 14:20 (six years ago) link

i have a hopeful theory that arya killing house frey was a symbolic gesture of the end of OTT rapesploitation and stupidly gratuitous female nudity on GoT, a tacit acknowledgement that the audience has grown to the point where those are bad directions to take the most popular show on television. whole lotta thick leather doublets on all the female leads in the first ep!

yeah the costume things i noticed most were the thick leather doublets and how euron greyjoy looks like he could be swaggering down camden high street

Euron Greyjoy turned into a cross between Jack Sparrow and Ian Watkins, looking forward to him getting eviscerated later this year.

I dug The Mountain's new get-up.

tobo73, Monday, 17 July 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

they're really getting on with it now, hard to think of a time on this show when the plot moved so significantly in such a short period of time. maybe this is due to them moving past Martin's books.

this too. i'm like when did iron born switch from black metal to glam?

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 17 July 2017 16:31 (six years ago) link

xp to akm: I think of last season (which i mostly hated) as a mulligan to rearrange the playing field and get away from all the worst elements of Martin's storytelling.
i hope they stick to the "a little bit from every storyline" method of programming each episode; i get tired of individual plotlines when they decide to do full eps for one splinter... annual tradition of the super-expensive sfx heavy full hour battle sequence aside of course.

god the ed sheeran scene was even worse than i could have imagined, and not just due to sheeran either, the entire casting for it was like he'd got permission to choose some stage school mates to join him.

mostly a good ep. i liked the stuff with the hound and the fire etc. poor old leper jorah still can't quite get the hint about dany. sam is still generally annoying, but the scene with the maestyr was good. i guess they're finally doing something with dany, even tho yet again she's just moved to another place to sit around for a while. also those montages they keep doing with her arriving in a place and sweeping around in a majestic manner are way overdone by now, that must be like the 10th one with the same "what if enya had been a man" soundtrack.

"what if enya had been a man" soundtrack

so good

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 17 July 2017 21:09 (six years ago) link

it's some fairly heinous grandstanding to just bung ed sheeran into an episode. i also thought the scene with that child ruler was such blatant attempts at getting gifs/retweets. been noticing that more and more with tv shows.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 17 July 2017 21:14 (six years ago) link

yeah she's dope but they're leaning on her a little too hard

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 17 July 2017 21:18 (six years ago) link

I didn't mind the actors in the Sheeran scene as much as I did the scene itself. "Gee golly gosh, when I get home from the war I'm going to finally get the chance to open that charity for abused puppies. I love my wife and I love my parents and as long as I think positive and work hard, absolutely nothing will graphically murder me next episode!" We get it! Arya is learning about how some people are good! OK already! Fuck!

Evan, Monday, 17 July 2017 21:23 (six years ago) link

It's pretty unbelievable that she didn't murder Sheeran on sight after hearing him sing

text text text text (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 July 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

If there was a tradition of murdering annoying musicians in Westeros, Sigur Ros would never have left that Joffrey wedding celebration in one piece.

Jamie is presumably still in the Kingsguard so he has vowed never to marry. He will never father a legitimate heir (openly). Cersei isn't supposed to be that old, though, and I can't remember why she can't have more kids.

Frederik B, Monday, 17 July 2017 21:57 (six years ago) link

I reckon she must be coming to the end of childbearing age. Lana Heady is mid 40s iirc.

chap, Monday, 17 July 2017 21:59 (six years ago) link

I think she still can (have kids) which is why shes trying to get at Euron even though alliance wise its a completely shit match.

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 17 July 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

Jaime's also remained faithful to his sister iirc, which is sweet of him

albvivertine, Monday, 17 July 2017 22:03 (six years ago) link

Lena Headey is 43. But Cersei is younger in the books, though she probably has been aged up for the show, as pretty much everyone has been.

Frederik B, Monday, 17 July 2017 22:04 (six years ago) link

Jamie is presumably still in the Kingsguard so he has vowed never to marry.

Considering his sister just burned hundreds of people to death and is now the monarch, I think she can easily release him from those vows, if she really wanted a Lannister 1000 year reich
