About the Vooredoms/7v07 apperance at All Tomorrow's Parties: there are rumors circulating around the internet that this month's ATP Festival in LA has been cancelled and/or postponed until September. I really hope it's not true, but does anyone know anything about this? The ATP web site (www.atpfestival.com) isn't responding.

The remix of VCN by eYe is superior to the original, better than Super AE, but not as good as Pop Tatari, Super Roots 6 or 7.

WOW2 has just been released in the UK, but i'd stear clear if you're not a fan of Onanie Bomb or Soul Discharge.

Does an UNKLE Rebore megamix really exist? This sounds horrid.

ss, Monday, 2 June 2003 15:56 (twenty years ago) link

I had written to ATP last week about my tix, and they ("helen") said they had just been sent. Why send them if you're going to cancel the event?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 2 June 2003 16:00 (twenty years ago) link

Vooredoms album has been in the can since 2001 -- but Warner Japan just doesn't feel like releasing it.

How are the Boredoms regarded in Japan? Are they music superstars, a national treasure? Is Eye a media hero? (Without knowing, I would guess that they must have, at the very least, the status that Sonic Youth has in the U.S. - if not even more exposure/popularity/"institutional" respect.)

I'm surprised that they couldn't get anything released that they wanted to release.

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

ATPLA has been rescheduled for late September.

(I'm going to keep on making boring comments about the Boredoms. What key is "Tomato Synthesizer" in?)

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 2 June 2003 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

(Rockist, do you prefer 'Acid Police' or 'B For Boredoms'?)

ss, Monday, 2 June 2003 17:19 (twenty years ago) link

the unkle remix album does indeed exist. it's better than the dj krush remix album, amazingly.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

Why are so few Boredoms releases available in the US? Judging from the prices on Ebay, there's a demand!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:08 (twenty years ago) link

dude, http://www.ab-cd.com or http://www.forcedexposure.com , for real. I found Chocolate Synthesizer at the mall. VCN is also at the mall assuming no one else has bought it. If you really need some Super Roots action and can't find it elsewhere go ahead and try http://us.yesasia.com .

Millar (Millar), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:42 (twenty years ago) link

people on Ebay are retarded. Then again, I shop at the mall.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:43 (twenty years ago) link

has some good stuff too

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:49 (twenty years ago) link

i found most of the pre-super ae records used. people who picked up that shit in the wake of nirvana mania dropped it like a day later.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

They've all pretty much been reissued on Zorn's label now so shouldn't be that hard to find in the States. The UK however has something like a one Boredoms album every 10 years import quotient.

Oh I meant to ask, does anyone have any of the super lush Japanese imports like the copy of Super AE that supposedly has some multi- coloured liquid inside the sleeve?

ss, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY PAYING IMPORT DUTY [~120 yen = $1 US]

They've all pretty much been reissued on Zorn's label now so shouldn't be that hard to find in the States.

??? hmm

there were 10,000 of super ARE (neon green puffy vinyl with clear liquid) and 10,000 of super GO (red puffy vinyl with clear liquid). check jetset for occasional boredoms rarities.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

I bet it tastes nice and isn't at all poisonous.

ss, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:24 (twenty years ago) link

Speaking of rarities, to anyone who had been pulling their hair out looking for an affordable copy of SR5, apparently, many copies have been "discovered", and it's available for regular Japanese import prices now. I actually got it on ebay shortly after this happened for about $25 -- a far cry from the $60+ you might see it for previously.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

SR5 is available at list price ~$16 (¥1,920) at most japanese retailers. shipping should be less than $9... a lot less if you buy a few things.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:38 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah around 1998 or so Amoeba in SF had like three copies of every Boredoms release for about $5 each. That was my intro -- I picked up the first Super Roots after reading about them in the Spin guide. Didn't care for it.

Here's an honest question for the Boredoms fans: What do you think their standing would be if they'd broken up before Super Roots 7 or Super Ae?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

I think they'd have become legends, especially because ending a career with an album like SR6, after everything that preceded it, would have been pretty darn enigmatic.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

i think they'd be legends too, but more in a "90s curio" kinda way

IIRC, wasn't there some Boredoms related album with a Gummi Worm inside the CD spine?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:18 (twenty years ago) link

That's a Boris CD, actually, Jon.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

a lot of the SUPER ROOTS stuff i heard is really no better than a bunch of 90s cassette releases on OSKA / chocolate monk - and that's not to say it's bad. it will not redeem your soul, though.

bob snoom, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 07:47 (twenty years ago) link

It's good to hear some balance, bob.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 07:55 (twenty years ago) link

It's true, not all the Super Roots stuff is essential. SR 7 is, though (if you like their last two albums).

Also worth tracking down are the singles that preceded Super ARe and VCN. They are "Super Go!!!" and "Vision Creation Newsun". Confusingly, the latter has the same name as the album but is a forty minute ep with an edit of the first track on VCN, a pretty good remix of stuff from that album, and a phenomenal live track that they played under a solar eclipse in '99. Forced Exposure is selling it (and copies of Super Roots 5 and 8, apparently).

If you can track down "Super Go" on vinyl, the b-side (different from the 2nd track on the CD version) is also really good. Though to be fair, it's a longer mix of the song that appears as "Super Now" on the comp CD that commemorated the 2002 All Tomorrow's Parties in LA. So if you have that, you probably don't need to spend the $20 or whatever...

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

I just ordered SR7+8, Rebore 1+3, Chocolate Synth, POP TATARI and VCN EP.

What is SR5 like?

Which places carry DJ Pica Pica Pica?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:57 (twenty years ago) link

I thought Forced Exposure carried DJ Pica Pica Pica, but I could be wrong. Rebore Vol 0 is really the way to go, even if you own VCN.

and for claiming friendster was a marketing scam in my profile

and for having fake profiles

dleone--Is Rebore 0 that good? I heard two of the other Rebores and wasn't the slightest bit impressed.

rw, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

Rebore is like Magical Mystery Tour to VCN's Sgt Pepper. It's about that different, and that good.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

I am listening to POP TATARI and I think it sounds like the Muppets doing a musical spectacular where they ape:

- James Brown
- The Stooges
- A bunch of cannibals
- Punk Rock
- Captain Beefheart
- Forcefield (obviously traveling through time to do so)

THIS WAS ON A MAJOR LABEL?

I don't know if I like it. People compare SOUL DISCHARGE to Lightning Bolt? This album seems pretty far off from the LASER BEASTS.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

POP TATARI sounds like some students with a heavy metal band trying way too hard to be wacky. the tunes aren't good the riffs aren't good, but hey! they dress up silly, make squawk noises, and they're Japanese! yu know like "Akira" or something. unless you really haven't heard a lot of music it really isn't very good. similar with pop tatari, what's that you say ? a band that sounds as "great" as TAD in their prime (?) with a trumpet player, oh you spoilin us mister zorn. BALLS.
soul discharge IS good. annoying on purpose this time WITH good tunes i stand up for it. it's better than ripping off Can and Amon Duul for a living.

three weeks pass...
new OoioO record KILA KILA KILA out this week [warning: m0mus picture if you scroll down], record release party in kyoto this saturday...

it's their first record in 3 years, they're pared down to a trio now, they changed their name to "the OoioO"... more later.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 13:09 (twenty years ago) link

That picture of Yoshimi looks way better than she actually looks. What label is this on? Domestic release? Oh yeah, more later.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

i dunno d., that looks just like yoshimi to me.

KILA KILA KILA is on nigo's label (ape sounds). he's put out the vinyl for ooioo before but this will be the first time he's putting out the CDs too.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

If someone can point me in the direction of a good album produced by any Japanese artist in the world, ever, in the history of mankind I would be very grateful. I can't quite believe that a nation of the size of Japan can ONLY produce incontinent, incoherent and self-indulgent plagiarists and obcurantists?!?!????
