I didn't even think about trying to go because I was almost certain I was scheduled for work, and then I turned out not to be

Feelies!

Feelies were good. Dawn Richard was marvelous.

Gonna be there again for a span today, I'll try to say hey. Alfred, you should jog over to that other section and get yourself one of Lost Lake's cocktails, if only to get a plastic cup drink with a full-on pineapple slice garnish, two pretty flowers and a giant plastic palm frond stirrer. Paul McGee is Chicago's resident cocktail icon, tiki division.

I want to like Mitski but the more I listen the more it all sounds just like boring 90's alt rock.

yesca, Sunday, 16 July 2017 13:14 (six years ago) link

Josh, let's meet!

LCD were boring, but it's my fault -- I don't care for this sound anymore.

the Mitski album is incredible but boy does her stuff not translate live, imo. still absolutely adore here, though.

alpine static, Sunday, 16 July 2017 15:52 (six years ago) link

yeah from all the footage i've seen her live performances are not very convincing unfortunately, she probably needs at least someone on keyboards/second guitar to do the songs justice

four years pass...

Didn't want to start a whole thread for this year's festival, but seeking any advice, tips, etc. I'm taking my 17yo son to the festival next Sunday. I sprung for the VIP tickets or whatever they're called to give us access to phone charging and in-and-out privileges. Any thoughts on what to expect? I've heard it's a pretty well run festival overall.

it's pretty well run. if it's hot and sunny, shade around the perimeter can be a premium. lots of good places to eat within walking distance.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 16:24 (one year ago) link

Cool, yeah, definitely planning to use the in-out access to avoid eating festival food.

VIP might get you access to different food and shorter lines. The food lines get pretty bad.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 17:03 (one year ago) link

I haven’t heard of a festival including in & outs with a VIP pass. That’s an… interesting statement on their food selection?

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Sunday, 10 July 2022 17:07 (one year ago) link

I think it's more a statement that people will pay not to be stuck there for 10 hours.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 17:09 (one year ago) link

Is it still in that smallish park where it used to be (I guess back in… 2009 or so)?

Bunheads Pilot Enthusiast (morrisp), Sunday, 10 July 2022 17:16 (one year ago) link

same place!

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 17:30 (one year ago) link

The in/out for me is mostly a hedge against my son getting angsty or both of us getting exhausted. The two acts he most wants to see are Pink Siifu, who's on right at noon, and Earl Sweatshirt, who's on at 6. Figured it would be good to be able to wander a bit.

Or I guess start time is 1 p.m., but we'll want to be there at noonish.

Tipsy!

I'll be there!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:09 (one year ago) link

Also: I'm older, therfore drinks + brunch matter more than ealy arrival.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:10 (one year ago) link

I met Josh and he's just as lovely

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:10 (one year ago) link

Aw. I'll be there off and on over the weekend.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:11 (one year ago) link

Hey! If you're there Sunday let's say hi!

Yep. Let's grab a beer

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:38 (one year ago) link

I'm in.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:43 (one year ago) link

I expect we'll be on the grounds most of the day, maybe like a mid-afternoon meet? (Alfred I'll mssg you my contact info)

I think the food at pfork is actually fine and there are lots of places to decompress/chill/people-watch. You’ll have fun.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:58 (one year ago) link

otm

I've attended since 2008 and agree that what you'll most need is shade. And the food in GA is actually better than in VIP.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2022 21:01 (one year ago) link

Sounds like a good day for a hat.

Pretty sure I have guest/VIP this year, so I'll be popping in and out as life allows, but I'll be sure to be there for a hunk of Sunday to say hi! Weather right now looks overcast and not too warm over the weekend, which is actually great for the fest.

me this evening: little guy, gray beard, blue raincoat, orange messenger bag, Eno T-shirt.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 16 July 2022 00:27 (one year ago) link

were you at The National?

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 16 July 2022 12:56 (one year ago) link

For a minute, but I was watching from the crowd. I'll be there today between 4 and 8:30. Maybe I'll wear a Mellotron t-shirt.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 16 July 2022 14:49 (one year ago) link

I love that some of you were able to connect!

A famous blue raincoat?

I'll be on site for most of it tomorrow, somewhat subject to the whims of my son. (He's excited for it but he can also get overwhelmed in crowds, so we may leave for a break at some point.) Alfred and I have traded contact info, so hopefully some of us can meet somewhere!

Japanese Breakfast (and Tweedy) made for a good summer-night livestream.

Hope to see some (more) of you today. I will be wearing a yellow Detroit Yacht Club T-shirt.

Great to see Josh again after all these years!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 July 2022 15:26 (one year ago) link

I'm in a black windbreaker, which I'm sure will make me stand out easily. :)

What a cool, chill festival. Great to meet Alfred and Josh in person after all these years of ILXing! We talked about music and politics and basically just had extended IRL ILX threads. Josh also flexed his VIP status to get me a free beer, which was awesome. Musicwise, really enjoyed Pink Siifu, Injury Reserve, Natural Information Society and especially Xenia Rubinos. My son got on the rail for Earl Sweatshirt and loved it, I kept farther back but it seemed like a good set. I liked the size and scale of the whole thing, big enough to feel like a real-deal festival but small enough to move around easily. Helped by a nicely overcast day, not too hampered by a short rain shower before Earl's set. I told my son that I'll be happy to come back if there's stuff he wants to see next year.

What a blast. Great to meet/see everyone, and glad to hear you all had a good time.

love you both
