I too am looking forward to the Bicep album, though it's also possible I am an obnoxious lad.

Enjoying this Us Mix EP from Anthony Naples. All the tracks on this are pretty great, more funky and groovy than his normal stuff.

Is 1080p finished as a label? Looks like they haven't released anything this year.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 20 July 2017 07:09 (six years ago) link

flopson - excellent choice

Week of Wonders (Ross), Thursday, 20 July 2017 07:33 (six years ago) link

probably. from what i heard the guy who ran 1080p got into some personal trouble and i'd be surprised if it picks back up again.

pretty much. but the story passed through a lot of ears before it got to me so..

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 20 July 2017 18:32 (six years ago) link

No way, that's a real shame.

I'm listening to this survey Spotify mix from the label - https://open.spotify.com/user/1080pcollection/playlist/4qAgghzz4x2KeNFQ5UJyfC - I was sort of following their stuff at a distance, but really, it's an amazing label imo! I guess great labels can do a good job of capturing a sound and scene, and it seems like this really does it for the stoner retro-house scene in Vancouver, the graphic design is actually a big part of that too - sorta template Tumblr aesthetics...

Also surprised at the jungle-style beats on some of these releases, I know some showed up on ILM threads, but there's quite a vibe around ambient early d'n'b and jungle that is really a sweet spot.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 20 July 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

i liked some of the stuff on the label, feel like pacific rhythm has a p similar aesthetic if you like the vancouver thing. i'm sorta prejudiced against the scene in general for really petty reasons and never go to to any nights here.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 July 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

Well, a big part of it is about an imaginary anyway. Actually being around it, participating directly would be something else.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 20 July 2017 18:42 (six years ago) link

Ok, cross-posting this track from the fake jungle thread then:

ya it was a great lil label, especially the last coupla years; rip

i'm sorta prejudiced against the scene in general for really petty reasons and never go to to any nights here.

what petty reasons?? when i was in vancouvar a friend brought me to his studio in Deep Blue and later to a Pacific Rhythms party, i felt a frosty vibe from the ppl he introduced me too (tho I've heard that's just what ppl are like there) esp the kids at the studio all had that preppy normcore look which was kinda off-putting

flopson, Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link

A lot of people in Van are stuck in their own bubble and seem pretty unapproachable. There's good people of course, but I would hesitate to call it a friendly city

Week of Wonders (Ross), Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

im moving there in 3 weeks forever :'(

flopson, Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

my petty reasons are that I've met some people who are sort of that scene-adjacent and while these people were nice enough the vibe is definitely art-school normcore middle-class hipster, used to be in an indie band, or in a noise group, and then discovered dance music a few years ago sort of thing. vancouver nights are definitely frosty too. now i should probably just get the stick out my ass and go and try and have a good time but i think I've perhaps overly-romanticized the (imo fantastic) dance music culture of where I'm from - glasgow - and that's getting in my way of just embracing what's around me now and i am dumb

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 July 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link

tl;dr - vancouver dance music isn't real enough for the authenticity boy

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 July 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

heh ironically the one guy who was real friendly to me that night was moving to glasgow

flopson, Thursday, 20 July 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

my go-to approach is to find a part of the room where people are dancing, don't pay attention to what people who aren't dancing are doing, and talk to no one

MikoMcha, Friday, 21 July 2017 13:21 (six years ago) link

mh - that's right!

flopson, will say I saw Nite Jewel recently and everyone was dancing, so it's not always the case :-)

Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 21 July 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

tbh I can't just instantly go from zero to dancing, usually involves kind of working my way into it and/or having a couple drinks, so if the crowd sucks and the drink service sucks the occasional misfire happens

mh, Friday, 21 July 2017 17:29 (six years ago) link

i show up at shows mashed most of the time to avoid misfires ha

saer, Saturday, 22 July 2017 16:53 (six years ago) link

Jim, I think your post has a lot of truth re: the music scene here. However, I think Vancouver perhaps doesn't have as much of a history of music in that sense that the UK does, so it's baby steps.

oh this is a little shameless with the sampling but its very nice! one for the vibey canalside summer afternoons

I'm iffy about Vancouver house for *extremely* petty reasons: I was once painfully rejected by someone that's friends with the Mood Hut guys and introduced me to them before they went big. I also think a lot of that music is pretty overrated, perhaps because it's received a lot of nepotistic hype via Andrew Ryce at Resident Advisor, who tends to consistently give glowing reviews to what I think are quite average records from people from Vancouver/his friends/whoever. Maybe I'm being paranoid (I don't think it's deliberate aggrandizement but it has a touch of conflict of interest) but I've gotten to the point where I just pass over his reviews of Mood Hut/Pacific Rhythm/etc records.

I miss posting here but I so rarely buy records from the present year that aren't already covered on places like RA. The only things I've got worth mentioning are Sven Weisemann - Separate Paths (https://svenweisemann.bandcamp.com/album/separate-paths-ep), a solid EP on Delsin which sounds exactly what a solid EP on Delsin would sound like, and Niro - It Takes Two (https://soundcloud.com/padsdiscs/sets/niro-it-takes-two-pads002), a kind of fun ep of quirky house.

ed.b, Monday, 24 July 2017 22:30 (six years ago) link

i stopped reading RA or any music crit other than writers that also post here before the vancouver thing got rolling. i didn't know RA hyped them up, i still associate RA with minimal, techno, deep house, and whatever english people are making now, post-bass music maybe. if anything i would've guessed RA was skeptical of vancouver and their ilk

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 24 July 2017 23:10 (six years ago) link

huh, I’ve disagreed with a few of AR’s write-ups but maybe never paid enough attention to Vancouver stuff to notice a bias. I’ve almost said hi after spotting him on several different occasions at shows on the east coast. got the impression he travels a lot

mh, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 01:44 (six years ago) link

on a semi-related note, I’m disappointed that Vice is closing down thump. It was a really mixed bag but there were a handful of things I really appreciated

I read about the Skytrain in Vancouver last year! I don't get much further west than Colwyn Bay that often though here is a record by Petre Vali

Looks like they are still playing 4-4-2 in Frankfurt and who can blame them. Meat pies on speed dial and still cheeky rabonas for the crowd
