Chuck's metal book, Marsh's singles book...Can't think of any pure-list books after that.

The Book of Rock Lists

Seconded. First read this when I was 12, really opened my eyes, learned about artists I knew little/nothing about (James Brown, Moby Grape, MC5).
The 1994 New Book Of Rock Lists isn't bad, but it weirdly seems to have dated worse in some ways than its predecessor.

There's a minimum of actual writing in this--voters attached blurbs to their lists--but this had a big influence on me coming out when it did, the late '70s, when such a concept was still new.

(The follow-up, appearing close a decade later, wasn't as noteworthy.)

yeah I've read that book over several times. The albums and singles lists in the back were very useful too.

That reasonable guide to horrible noise or whatever piece is a list

Chuck Eddys the Accidental History of Rock n Roll is pretty much a list book too

Title probably not remembered right
This one is a list of artists, but nested in that is a guide to their works, so in that way is a "music" list. Certainly in that music is embedded in the word musician...Free Jazz and Free Improvisation: An Encyclopedia: [2 volumes]: Todd S. Jenkins. Available in a lot of university reference libraries. One copy left in paper on Amazon. Other than that, exorbitant pricing, because Publisher, I guarantee you Todd Jenkins does not see one whit.
