that is quite a long build up for a pop song, but man what a payoff

I don't get this at all. Much as I'm happy for her to be able to release the music she wants (and it's obvious the fact she can actually sing has been hidden) this is a tuneless mess.

boxedjoy, Friday, 7 July 2017 09:48 (six years ago) link

The closest precedent I can think of for this is that song where Miley Cyrus screams about her dead dog

Evan R, Friday, 7 July 2017 13:19 (six years ago) link

what's odd is i woke up with this in my head. obviously it's not meant to be some kind of hyper-catchy radio candy but i guess the tune did grab a hold of my brain.

watched the vid a couple more times and i kinda love it now.

dyl, Friday, 7 July 2017 16:24 (six years ago) link

yeah thumbs up from me, i'm with her and it's a good rallying song, even though it's outwardly directed (towards dr. luke obviously) it totally pulls off the thing where the fuck-you isn't just masquerading self-servingly as a personal anthem, it actually feels like a personal anthem that includes, proudly and rightly, notes of fuck-you. if it has a certain diary-ishness i think that works. and yeah, nobody's idea of a killer lead pop single, no, but when it finally kicks in it REALLY kicks in. high note was awesome.

This would have ended up feeling less like an exposed nerve if it had tried to shroud its message in metaphorical lyrics. I think it's absolutely necessary for the reach it has that it was expressed as plainly as possible.

So so excited for this album. I hope every single song is as loud and angry as this one.

where I am at: this is mostly a conceptual triumph, not so much a musical triumph but she's still on sony so it's a miracle it's as good as it is

Omg this is so great

tangenttangent, Friday, 11 August 2017 09:34 (six years ago) link

So much to enjoy here. Reminds me a little bit of the s/t Paramore in the way it takes an artist who previously focused on doing one very specific thing really well and shows off the range of other incredible shit they can do, too

Evan R, Friday, 11 August 2017 14:58 (six years ago) link

yes! i am really impressed by this

dyl, Sunday, 13 August 2017 00:48 (six years ago) link

it's really really fun and i love its redemptive arc

maura, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 14:43 (six years ago) link

i think the outlaw countryish songs are the strongest third of the record, hope she does a whole album of that someday

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

yeah there are like three different styles on the album that make me press the "I want a whole album of this" button. Fun to imagine all the directions she could go next

totally digging this album. and "prayer" gives me even heavier chills in context. "boogie feet" is the only track that kinda bugged me on first listen.

what with the new taylor swift song being embarrassing, the door is still open for y'all over here on team kesha

imago, Monday, 28 August 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

also what with kesha just being the superior person/popstar in just about every conceivable way

Record is really good too, agree with Brad that the country-tinged songs are the best.

damn. i have no idea what the country market is like, but i feel like she could have a hit with that. great selection on her part, gives me some of the same goosebumps as "praying" did on first listen.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 24 September 2017 01:11 (six years ago) link

she's so good. i'm excited to see her next week

i do not want the people at my typical 'roke watering hole trying to sing it.

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Friday, 22 December 2017 05:40 (six years ago) link

(not cos of the song, but cos of the two off-key regulars who mistakenly think they're divas)

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Friday, 22 December 2017 05:42 (six years ago) link

seems kind of a downer for karaoke

sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Friday, 22 December 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

welcome to the karaoke selections of off-key regulars

Newb Sybok (Doctor Casino), Friday, 22 December 2017 17:31 (six years ago) link

one of my exes goes to the same place I go on occasion and she has it in her head that she has a great voice so she sings slow, showstopping ballads by Celine Dion and other diva songs and so is so wildly off key as to render the songs incomprehensible.

I almost want to dare her to do this one to see what she does to it when the whistle note comes.

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Friday, 22 December 2017 19:47 (six years ago) link

this is exactly why Praying has to become a karaoke classic.

Great performance, but the Grammys spinning Kesha's comeback (a triumph over the industry that tried to block her from making an album) as a victory FOR the industry was really gross

Evan R, Monday, 29 January 2018 16:30 (six years ago) link

yeah, I got into this recap, but it's somewhat mindboggling how many people hosting/showcased/otherwise on the Grammys were JUST in the news for sexual harassment/predatory/general pustularity. and this is just the known ones.

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Monday, 29 January 2018 16:34 (six years ago) link

(the ads against the Grammys were also weirdly retrograde: women fainting over Old Spice, women indulging in the sinful low-calorie offerings of Fiber One, the existence of Fifty Shades)

finally got around to listening to Rainbow. there's some really awesome stuff on there, huge surprise for me. didn't really like her older work for the most part. "Woman" and "Let 'Em Talk" are the showstoppers but there's several other good tracks here too
