I think I am physically incapable of listening to something knowingly called "old-timey music"

i mourn the original double-time, triplety version of hit 'em up style. i remember seeing the video when it first came out, and it must have flopped and been replaced by the version with the more traditional beat. can't find the original anywhere (ie it's not on youtube).

this band is pretty damn talented though (watching some other videos where they're switching up instruments)

Just saw them last night -- third time I've seen them play -- and they are for real one of the best live bands in America right now. I like their recordings fine, but you can't really understand how great and raucous and funny they are unless you see them. I know they sound like some kind of NPR fantasy band, and in some ways they are, but they're the opposite of fusty, puritanical revivalists. It's not just that they do "Hit em Up Style," they infuse everything with everything -- jazz, blues, country, R&B, gospel, last night they brought down the house doing 19th-century Afro-Scottish Gaelic traditionals with a thumping beat. They can give a 5-minute sociomusical discourse on the significance of minstrelsy, and then follow it up with an original tune like this one: http://vimeo.com/m/43149444.

Anyway, if you get a chance to see them, you oughta.

Jon Pareles article on singer Rhiannon Giddens whose solo album produced by T-Bone Burnett is coming out in february

T-Bone enthusing about her in another article:

"It was clear the first time I heard her at rehearsal," he said, "that Rhiannon is next in a long line of singers that include Marian Anderson, Odetta, Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe. We need that person in our culture."

x-post--some folks dislike producer T-bone Burnett for being a born-again Christian, and others for just being the main go-to guy for Americana roots production work
