drivers who don't use the center left-turn lane when turning left out of a sidestreet or driveway, instead opting to sit in the opposing lane(s) and block oncoming traffic while they wait for an opening in their destination lane. i.e.:

oh, I've seen even better. a three lane road where the center lane is a turning lane, and they stop in one of the normal lanes with their turn signal on

is the center lane... invisible?

mh, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 16:03 (six years ago) link

well at least they had the decency to signal :-/

Or when they come to an almost complete stop in the normal lane and then slightly turn the front of their car into the turn lane, making sure that people behind also have to stop and then inch around them.

in Orlando people outright drive the wrong way on a one-way street all the time, not drunk, not because they're going 200 feet down the street and don't feel like having to turn around on back roads....not because the signs are confusing, just cos they're morons.

I was going down Central Ave I think and saw a guy oncoming the other direction and thought to myself "strange never seen that before" then looked and remembered that's cos it was a one way road, and dude was just flat out driving not thinking anything weird about their being no median stripe or dividing line or that everybody else was going my way. Happened on Edgewater once as well (and that guy I came closer to hitting).

I get that every city has one-way roads and this is a thing that can happen anywhere but Orlando roads aren't particularly hard to figure out.

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 16:44 (six years ago) link

also - people that sit in the wrong seats because they're too dumb to know how to read their tickets.

I get sometimes not knowing what section is where, but when you're sitting in row C, seat 19, and your ticket clearly says row V, seat 23, gtfo.

what I also hate is when people camp in your seat because maybe they bought two tickets separate on Stubhub and the other one was next to me, and they figure "we'll sit together and ask if the guy sitting here wants our seat". this dude pulled this on me at an Orlando City game (it was still 15 mins prior to gametime) and when I told him it was my seat, he asked if I wanted his (worse) seat, which was also nowhere near my friends who I sat behind....and I was like "those are my friends in front of me, plus I paid $900 for this ticket, so....no".

thing is I probably wouldn't mind it so much if the people approached me when I got there and asked "hey - I know my ticket isn't there, bu tmy dad is sitting next to you, can we switch", but the annexation of the seat and assumption that I'll be cool w/ it is the thing that irks me, like....also, is it really that hard to find two together? I mean we're talking events that never sold out that had blocks and blocks of tickets available.

At least in my state, it's illegal to use the center lane as a merging lane.

People still do it all the time - and it's especially illegal to block lanes of traffic - but there may be a slight reason to their madness.

The fridge at work is disgusting, everything that's been in it stinks, my hands stink after touching anything that's been in it and the stink won't wash off

if I get a quiet moment I'll wipe the shelves down myself, but
a) I live in fear that the big boss will come in and roar "we pay you too much for you to be cleaning fridges!"
b) I'm not sure it will actually make much difference, I cleaned the top shelf a while ago after something leaked on it and a few days later it was just as horrible as ever

(also the freezer section has several inches of ice on the walls and ceiling, there's barely any room left to put anything. so in need of defrosting. there's a weekend-long power shutdown in August so I suppose it will defrost then, whether people want it to or not...)

Is there a suggested life of a fridge the way there is of a mattress? Been wondering.
Watched Hunkin talking about the fridge and the door being the main thing that goes but wondering if that is long out of date.

Stevolende, Thursday, 29 June 2017 09:43 (six years ago) link

Duration I meant, mattress is supposed to be about 8 years ideally before replacing.

Stevolende, Thursday, 29 June 2017 09:57 (six years ago) link

Also annoying me today:

2. someone forwarded a quick off-the-cuff email I'd have phrased more diplomatically if I'd known it would get forwarded directly (nothing v rude, I just said "we can't do x, can you persuade the other team to do y instead" and would have written it in a more floral way had they been copied in or had I not been in a hurry to deal with someone else's stupid crisis)

3. had filled an online shopping basket with a few almost-late birthday presents I forgot to order in a timely fashion, then spent 20 minutes dealing with someone else's said work crisis, by which time my basket had timed out

I read that article y/day about Amazon being a de facto monopoly and thought "yes I should try to buy more things not through Amazon" but then you remember the world of online shopping outside Amazon involves lots of little piss-you-about things like baskets timing out or payment systems/address forms that don't quite work right and the dark side is so tempting

basically today is really annoying, or I'm really irritable, not sure which

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 29 June 2017 10:28 (six years ago) link

2. Yes! I hate this.

kinder, Thursday, 29 June 2017 11:23 (six years ago) link

I got publicly called out on a status call by the project leader once thanks to someone doing this - cos I left him off, and someone forwarded to him, and he claimed I was 'keeping him in the dark'. when really, I had already planned to try one last ditch effort on my own that morning, and get him involved in the afternoon, only to have that plan thwarted by forward-person.

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Thursday, 29 June 2017 13:55 (six years ago) link

there've been more than a few times where people have insulted other people and fwded the email in question to the person they were insulting by mistake.

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Thursday, 29 June 2017 13:56 (six years ago) link

I literally just did this like two weeks ago. I thought the email I was replying to was sent just to me, so thought I was replying just to the individual, and said something unkind about the other two people included on the email.

many xps re communal fridge

this one woman is the WORST. she buys a bunch of grapes, eats half and then lets the rest sit in an open bag forever. or she'll just leave half a lemon on the shelf, forgotten. right now she's got an costco-sized bag of celery sticks that's been sitting open for a week

fucking store your shit properly you lazy asshole

she's 100% of the reason why the fridge has to be cleaned twice a month because it always smells like a compost heap

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 29 June 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link

that's one of the few things that's great about working somewhere large enough to be corporate -- the cleaning people throw every open container away that's in the fridge every weekend and once a quarter they just throw away everything and wipe it out

mh, Thursday, 29 June 2017 18:17 (six years ago) link

At one place I worked there was a woman who was in treatment for leukemia and on a special diet. Her stuff took up a lot of space in the staff fridge and there was an employee who constantly complained to management about it. Then the woman died. At her memorial service I remember thinking, "I'm glad I'm not that asshole who was always complaining about her food."

I think a lot of people who complain about things like that are deeply uncomfortable with illness and relating to those that are ill and the complaints are the most basic coping mechanism -- take this out of my sight so I don't have to confront it. People do the same things with poverty or even social diversity: I don't understand this or it makes me uncomfortable, so I am going to make sure it's nowhere in my sight.

I hate small appliances like irons and popcorn makers that don't have an on-off switch. You just plug them in to turn them on and unplug them to turn them off. Freaks me out, especially when you see the little spark jump from prong to outlet.
