Has anyone been dead on in their placement of a track?

27 Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money (actual: 29)

that's as close as i've come

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Nuxx is the version that we all know and love (from "Trainspotting").

The original version on the single is 100 X better, of course.

bah anthony! first kerry loses to bush, now freaknasty loses to belle and sebastian! my panties will remain twisted as long as puritan funhatas abound!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I had Born slippy at 23, which is my closest.

comments?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i always play the original version
love the varying breakbeats at the beginning and how it builds up into such a pounding acid rez track

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

it's about time it started reeking of testosterone - the rest is so wimpy.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

nuxx is the one everyone knows.

the original born slippy is actually quite different. no lyrics at all. different synth sounds etc. (i like the original better)

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I voted for shimmy shimmy ya fwiw.
Born Slippy has a superspecial place in my heart forever.
Especially the Long Train mix.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I know personally that even though I often site it as one of my favroite singles ever, I didn't vote for "Born Slippy" figuring everyone else would, picking the personally more exciting "Cowgirl" instead. Maybe there are just a lot of people similarly bored with the song at the moment.

"Black Steel" now. I look like a total fucking jackass.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:07 (nineteen years ago) link

wasn't the "Long Train" mix of Dark And Long?

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

So far, that's three people who prefer the original "Born Slippy" to the NUXX version -- maybe this explains the low placing?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:09 (nineteen years ago) link

i still voted for NUXX, even though i prefer the "original" mix

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:09 (nineteen years ago) link

"Black Steel," awesome.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Nuxx is the version that we all know and love (from "Trainspotting").

Completely, totally, eternally OTM.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, i voted for nuxx as well because i am a big underworld fan and its the track that introduced me to them. i like a ton of their tracks more, including cowgirl, but nuxx is still damn good.

SAINT ETIENNE - "He's On the Phone" (471 pts, 23 votes, 1 first place)

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Hes_On_The_Phone.3.jpg

" "He's On the Phone" was St. Etienne's big "upmarket" single. There is no reason why that couldn't have been a massive hit. Its unabashed lack of indie cred is the best thing about it. "
-- Barry Bruner

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Tiresome.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I've forgotten what I meant by "upmarket" single but I stand by the rest. The best single of the last ten years.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Boring.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought Born Slippy would be much higher than that - I really thought it would be top ten.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I finally figured it out.
AlexSF doesn't like pop, does he?

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

IF YOU HATE "HE'S ON THE PHONE" THEN YOU HAVE NO SOUL AND YOU ARE A BAD DANCER.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I was surprised 'Born Slippy' was as high as it was - I thought it had been forever tainted by the uncool of Trainspotting.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I have nothing against St Etienne, but FIVE FUCKING TRACKS IS LITTLE MUCH DONTCHYA THINK!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:18 (nineteen years ago) link

wasn't the "Long Train" mix of Dark And Long?"
You're totally right of course. My mind was elsewhere.
I meant "Deep Pan Nuxx"

2PAC - "California Love" (490 points, 28 votes)

http://morning365.nefficient.co.kr/cd_img/20020404145248949.jpg

"California Love, odd it'd come up because once my parents let go of their iron-anti-rap grip that'd developed from about 88 - 94 or 95, I played that song non-stop. There are no rap songs besides California Love. I could be shot dead this instant, and if California Love was playing, I'd die happy. In fact, I'd go so far to say that there are virtually no other songs, period, besides California Love. Genius - when the bass and piano come swaggering in like John Wayne on a bender, it's simply the best moment ever and I never tire of it."
-- Ally

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't really hate 'He's On The Phone', but it's one of those times when the 'smart pop' thing gets to me and I just want to listen to some proper commercial pop instead. I prefer it when their records are more tainted by 'indie cred'. Like 'Avenue', or better for dancing, like 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:20 (nineteen years ago) link

(the Weatherall mix of which has just come on my iTunes - hurrah!)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:21 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah I'll agree that even as much as I love St Et, "He's On The Phone" is one of my least favorite singles of theirs. which is why it didn't show up in my list

OTM re: Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Avenue (and throw in Who Do You Think You Are for good measure)

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:22 (nineteen years ago) link

As I said, I don't know much about 90s hiphop, but I did vote for 'California Love' and it seems it should be higher than #25.

DEPECHE MODE - "Enjoy the Silence" (494 points, 30 votes, 3 first place votes)

http://music.porkrind.org/Depeche%20Mode/Enjoy%20The%20Silence/cover.jpg

"'Violator' = delicious. The only reason I would lose interest after that record would be to fall into a deep funk when I realize I may never hear a song quite as perfect as "Enjoy the Silence" ever again."
--Clarke B.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:24 (nineteen years ago) link

(x-post re: Weatherall mix of OLCBYH) what's that bit at the break where she says something about "the DJ licks the spliff with his lyical lips" or something like that? love that part. think i'll have to go home and put that one on just now

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I have nothing against St Etienne, but FIVE FUCKING TRACKS IS LITTLE MUCH DONTCHYA THINK!!
I agree that five tracks is a hell of a lot (and probably too many) for only one artist in a top 100, but Saint Etienne and Pulp were probably the best singles bands of the 90's, so their swamping of the list is somewhat justifiable.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Is that "California Love" comment from Ally the kind of stuff that led Chuck Eddy to call her one of the most promising young music critics?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahahahaha the top of this list is going to be all "The Bends", "Just", "Paranoid Android", "Sex-Type Thing", "Evenflow", "Alive", "Jeremy", "Smells Like Teen Spirit", etc

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:26 (nineteen years ago) link

"The DJ eases a spliff from his lyrical lips" yeah - right at the start.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Dr. Bill, you made me cower in fear but then I remembered that most of the songs you named weren't nominated.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:29 (nineteen years ago) link

"but Saint Etienne and Pulp were probably the best singles bands of the 90's"

Bullshit.

DAFT PUNK - "Da Funk" (495 points, 27 votes)

http://www.thefirstcut.net/dafdaf.jpg
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/benjamingouzien/images/clips/daftpunkdafunk.jpg

"The best thing is, oddly, that 'Da Funk' is one of those tracks that sounds incredible no matter what speed you play it at. Speed it up a little, and it's amazing. Slow it down, it *still* sounds great..."
-- Paul Strange

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:30 (nineteen years ago) link

bullshit

i'd actually tend to agree, maybe adding in the Pet Shop Boys to that list

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:32 (nineteen years ago) link

All I can think of when looking at this list unfold is jed's disdainful face.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Well I was wrong about everything else, but at least I was right about "Da Funk" and "Enjoy the Silence".

As for Saint Etienne, I'd say "Like a Motorway" and "Nothing Can Stop Us" were both deserving, but "He's on the Phone" really isn't so great.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Most of the best Pet Shop Boys are '80s, I think. I'd certainly have Pulp as my favourite singles band, or just band, of the '90s, but Saint Etienne would be a fair way down my list.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:35 (nineteen years ago) link

'Where Ther Streets Have No Name', 'Being Boring', 'Can You Forgive Her?', 'Se A Vida E', 'Go West'. I dunno. 80s vs. 90s PSB singles is a tough one for me. Agree about Pulp and St. Etienne.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I was sure Da Funk would be top ten, especially after so many people were creaming themselves over the far inferior Digital Love in the other poll.

THE CARDIGANS - "Lovefool" (500 pts, 31 votes, 3 first place)

http://www.swr3.de/__pix/cover/500x435/3685.jpg

" "Lovefool" is perfect on so many levels."
-- nickalicious

"I never realized that Coolio was lamenting the lack of "Lovefool" in his life."
-- roxymuzak (in response to "Gangsta's Paradise" lyrics)

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Even taking the vote splitting into account, I'm really surprised that "He's on the Phone" handily beat out every other Saint Etienne single. I would have put my money on "Like a Motorway" or "Avenue" finishing highest out of the bunch.
