stellar liner notes. You've got Susan Rogers doing the main essay, plus a song by song breakdown of the main album by all the members of the Revolution

both of these things (and the live dvd) made me wish they had sent me a physical copy before i filed my piece. oh well lol

Annoyed at being miscredited on the reissue, Jill Jones has supposedly personally leaked Wednesday, Killing At The Soda Shop and her vocal version of Our Destiny

Well well indeed. "Killing at the Soda Shop" appears to be the totally unknown rarity?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 June 2017 14:14 (one year ago) Permalink

I bought the two-CD set at Target this morning for $13. Ned's right about the lines. "We Can Funk" sounds massive in the car. Are those acoustic drums augmented with Linn?

'we can fuck" has the basically same backbeat as "fame" by david bowie right? love it in any case

I want a rip of the version of "Purple Rain" that's supposed to be Wendy and Lisa's rough demo of it. It's the first time you hear it in the movie, and it's all with synths I think?

Drum pattern on "The Dance Electric" is the same as on "Mountains," right? But a little faster?

Hearing "Father's Song" was kinda amazing, not merely for how he interpolated that into "Computer Blue," but also because I want to hear a whole slew of tracks like that from that era.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 June 2017 02:52 (one year ago) Permalink

Just bought the shit out of this. First CD I've bought via Amazon in about a year! Ned's 'wider picture' post OTM.

i will never understand "purple rain (song) is boring/dirge/etc". i mean, on the surface i guess i understand since it's long & simple & repetitive.
but, like
i mean
they are taking you to mfing CHURCH!!!
i love it & it makes me ugly-cry so hard. i love it now even more after reading the band's liner notes where they say that it was one of their few pure collaborations where they each contributed something to the creation of the song & that made it pretty meaningful for them. i think it shows.

Christ, the version of 'We Can Fuck' on this rules so much - far better than any other version I've heard, including the version on Graffiti Bridge - it's also great to have the full version of 'Computer Blue' in decent sound quality (thinking about substituting it for the edited version on the album itself whenever I play Purple Rain) - also 'Wonderful Ass' and 'Father's Song' both rule... I agree that 'The Dance Electric' runs a little too long, but otherwise I'm pleased with the stuff on this.

100% on Purple Rain.
just that single 6-note figure he returns to throughout the solo of Purple Rain kills me.

i've got disc 2 on repeat in my car
so many highlights it seems pointless to list them but one i keep enjoying is the whoosh of the cymbal (?) in Roadhouse Garden
i like that version of We Can F**k too because it takes such a different turn in the middle than the one i've heard
long version of Computer Blue also *heart eyes emoji*

good grief the 7" edit of let's go crazy is weird. good god it's nice to hear these 12" edits taken from a non-vinyl source. "god" 12" mix is so fucking great, help

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 20:38 (one year ago) Permalink

"Velvet Kitty" is like the missing link between pub rock and Kraftwerk

"Possessed" is a really excellent "tracky" track, it reminds me of Tuomas asking about whether Prince ever did straight up house songs. It's not a straight-up house song but it's getting there.

That DRUM SOUND and that slightly slower than house tempo it is just PAVLOVIAN with me and SO MANY of these songs have it!!

"Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden" sublime, I keep rewinding

And agreed, Hallway mix of Computer Blue a universe devastator, can imagine a club like Optimo going absolutely mental to a full playout of it

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:10 (one year ago) Permalink

They missed out by not putting "Purple Music" on here. Now that's some amazing proto-House Prince. There are even bad House edits of it floating around these days.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:14 (one year ago) Permalink

Fucking love purple music but every version of it I have sounds terrible

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:21 (one year ago) Permalink

Yeah, that's one of my favorite proto-house outtakes along with "The Line" and haven't heard a remotely good quality rip of either.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:22 (one year ago) Permalink

I'm guessing they could have dug for the originals in Ye Olde Vault.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:23 (one year ago) Permalink

Tracer otm, the sound of this band at this time, those drums, those saturated oberheim poly pads + piano, the guitar obv and the way his voice sounds with Lisa's and Wendy's, it's just the best place for my ears, I could stay forever like tamlin in fairy land

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:24 (one year ago) Permalink

It must have been brutal for Prince to edit down 'Computer Blue' from 12 minutes down to the 4-5 minutes that it is on the LP, now that the full version is available in great quality, it makes the album version completely redundant and makes it feel incomplete.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:26 (one year ago) Permalink

"Heaven" is another amazing PR era track they could've put on here as well. Not a huge fan of "Velvet Kitty Cat" and "Love and Sex". They're sort of doodles as opposed to some of the other things from the era they could have dug up and put on there. "Possessed", "Purple Music", "Heaven" and the rest on one cd would have been insane. Alas...

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:32 (one year ago) Permalink

I think velvet kitty cat is on here because it's something that can be pointed to as really truly new to people

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:34 (one year ago) Permalink

I think the entire package is presented as something "new" for listeners. I doubt the record co. is thinking of the diehard Prince freaks over your average music listener when compiling a set like this.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:37 (one year ago) Permalink

Idk you don't think they might've put just one thing on there to say 'yes there's stuff in the vault even the cult has never heard of'?

or at night (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:39 (one year ago) Permalink

"Velvet Kitty Cat" is a perfect throwaway -- the synth sound alone!

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:40 (one year ago) Permalink

It's ok, Alfred.

I dunno. I mean -- they certainly did do that - and bless 'em. But it's not as dope as the tracks I mentioned. I think most fellow Prince freaks would agree.

They are probably going for the nostalgia factor in getting this to older listeners as well as the newcomers who may have only recently been turned on to Prince.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 21:40 (one year ago) Permalink

I dunno, Jay Vee, let's not get too far down a road where there's some sort of comprehensive pristine-sound release of all the rarities from 86-87 and the response is "No "Wally"? FAIL."
