That's a difficult choice, really. The music on The Hunter is mostly awful, but Debbie's 'do on the album cover looks as if it influenced Chad Kroeger, so very difficult.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:03 (six years ago) link

Weren't a couple of the band members complete raging junkies by the time of The Hunter?

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:03 (six years ago) link

We've established, of course, that Eat to the Beat is only a shade less amazing than PL, right?

I may like EtoB even better than PL.

can we not vote for Rush Rush...? I guess that's a Debbie solo song

Οὖτις, Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

No Harry solo, right? Otherwise "I Want That Man," a favorite karaoke number of mine, can't fit.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I agree that Eat to the Beat is no Parallel Lines, but it comes close enough and really, that's the best that Blondie and Mike Chapman could have hoped for when they went into the studio to make. The only thing that I'd actually change about Eat to the Beat is its shit title.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 22 June 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

I've always wondered why it has such a dumb title

oh totally

I just copied and pasted the album tracklistings from Wikipedia, Call Me should be on that list obviously.

Happy to run a Debbie Harry solo side poll, just submit a ballot of any number of tracks.

ETTB runs out of steam after "Slow Motion" but it's fire before that.

I already have my #1 picked out and it wasn't a single.

What? Even though 'Atomic' is the next track after 'Slow Motion'?

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 22 June 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

I forgot whether it came first. OK so after "Atomic" then!

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 June 2017 19:11 (six years ago) link

No 'Call Me' in the list?

No 'Susie and Jeffrey' either. Sacrilege!

Jeff W, Thursday, 22 June 2017 20:31 (six years ago) link

I just made a quick list and was surprised how many songs I wanted to include from the first album. I always think of Eat To The Beat and Parallel Lines battling it out for my favourite Blondie album, but it actually could be the debut.

kitchen person, Thursday, 22 June 2017 21:24 (six years ago) link

If Mike Chapman is to be believed, Autoamerican was the easiest album of them all to make and The Hunter was the hardest.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 22 June 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

thanks for taking over this poll Nate. one reason i gave up on it is because all my past polls i knew the artist inside and out. with Blondie there were some gaps but looking forward to diving into this catalog.

Bee OK, Friday, 23 June 2017 02:05 (six years ago) link

As a complete sucker for '60s girl groups, "Slow Motion" might be my number one.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 23 June 2017 02:13 (six years ago) link

#1 blondie song, 11:59
Tied for #1, Atomic
#2 Blondie song, Dreaming
Tied for #2, the rest of Parallel Lines

Treeship, Friday, 23 June 2017 03:20 (six years ago) link

I am going to do a real ballot later. I usually don't bother with these but this one is different.

Treeship, Friday, 23 June 2017 03:22 (six years ago) link

i should say, i'm going to try and get through everything. does anybody have any song suggestions from the 20174 release?

Bee OK, Friday, 23 June 2017 14:03 (six years ago) link

I've said it before, but few more perfect expressions of desire and, ah, rapture exit than the line "Your hair is beautiful," buttressed by how ominous the song becomes after the chord change.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 June 2017 14:15 (six years ago) link

I can tell you now my #1 and #2 are "Pretty Baby" and "Dreaming," and after that I can pick and choose.

Not to be all hipster but there's also "Poets Problem," from the b-side of the "Presence, Dear" single. It's a really good Jimmy Destri song.

Also "Llámame," the Spanish-language "Call Me."

Josefa, Friday, 23 June 2017 17:17 (six years ago) link

I just threw together a ballot of my favorites, which wasn't v difficult given that Parallel Lines is literally one of the first albums I remember hearing/seeing (the other is the SNF soundtrack)

I would like to put in a good word for "Shayla" here

20174?, not sure why i was writing out a zip code. anyways meant 2017 release.

Have Odenkirk and Cross ever copped to ripping of "A Shark in Jets Clothing" for Mr. Show's theme?

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 24 June 2017 00:45 (six years ago) link

Yes, "Angels on the Balcony" is a nice song. (Also "Live It Up" from that album.)

I must rep for "Accidents Never Happen" which has always been a big favourite of mine. Jimmy Destri was a great songwriter for a while there.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Saturday, 24 June 2017 01:30 (six years ago) link

Yeah, that's another good one. I'm hoping to see quite a fair few deep cuts place on this poll.

I make no apologies for including two-thirds of Parallel Lines on my ballot. Great songs across the first four records, but that one is the classic for a reason.

"Poets Problem"

Good old "unique b-side"

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 June 2017 14:24 (six years ago) link

Oh, and "Platinum Blonde", "Puerto Rica" and "Thin Line".

I don't recall "Thin Line" I have to say..

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 June 2017 14:35 (six years ago) link

So I've went on a Blondie listening spree today in preparation for this poll, and I'm up to The Hunter now... fucking hell, what a weird record.

If you post the French lyrics from "Sunday Girl" as they're presented on the Lyricswiki site into Google Translate, you get something amazing for the final chorus:

Dé pê che-toi, dé pê che-toi et attends
Toute la semaine absent et pourtant j'attends
J'ai le cafard, je t'en prie viens voir
ce que ton amour repré sente pour moi
I got the Blues

Go fishing, go fishing and wait
All week absent and yet I wait
I have the cockroach, please come see
What your love represents for me
I got the blues

i always seem to have the wrong pick so many of my selections, so this is more par for the norm for me. this is why i love ILM, where i can find some like souls and the board delivers again and again.

I like "Tide Is High" as a song, but Blondie's version is not my favorite version so I can't see voting for it.

'Rapture' > 'The Tide Is High' ... although 'Rapture' is possibly my least favourite of Blondie's "disco" numbers...

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 30 June 2017 21:14 (six years ago) link

genuinely baffled as to how anything but Union City Blue could possibly win. it has a unique atmosphere that song; you never hear anything else with quite that kind of upbeat yearning quality to it. IMO.
