always took the thread title as thinly ironic tbh

idk i think when he first burst onto the scene he was pretty likeable. it wasn't until he took of with his LCD SJW schtick that he really became insufferable

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link

iirc immediately after jeopardy he had cool cred with me because he challenged the narrative around him as the 'game-theory-using' guy who 'broke jeopardy,' and called out that the 'bad guy' 'cold' 'evil mastermind' whatever tropes were not separable from a racial imaginary of the computer-like, heartless asian come to beat our honest american children by studying too much. i might be garbling this but it was cool to see some random guy, given a spotlight, choosing to articulate a critical position about that spotlight through the lens of race. don't quite have it in me to wade back through the full ILX discussion which started here: Will that guy on Jeopardy ever lose? but people were saying he'd be a good ilxor; i see his first essay on "misogyny, entitlement and nerds" got props too.

when gamergate came around i also remember thinking he was super OTM on it, not jumping on a bandwagon at all but being one of the many lifelong gamers who spoke out to condemn gamergate and wax on, perhaps navel-gazingly at times, about how they related to the hobby in this different and less fucked up way. maybe it wouldn't all hold up if i reread it now, but at the time the situation was so toxic and tbh dangerous for a lot of people involved that i was extending mental hi-fives to everybody on the right side of the battle. i have never followed him actively and maybe he has posted many insufferable and terrible things since, or that we now have higher expectations of our internet celebrities but it's not so bizarre that ilxors thought he was a cool guy.

Lol

yeah honestly i'm not really sure why arthur is/should be widely hated on ilx

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 04:44 (six years ago) link

Bc i think he is lame and ppl around here always follow my lead

Treeship, Thursday, 22 June 2017 04:49 (six years ago) link

i agree he's lame, but there are plenty of regular posters who basically seem to share his worldview

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 04:51 (six years ago) link

I like him, but that anecdote about him ignoring his wife is bothering me. I guess I'd have to see the clip in context, but I don't think I want to watch a doc about the guy.

it's because the chapo guys clown on him and all their followers/fanboys lap it up

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 22 June 2017 05:37 (six years ago) link

Now I get it. Fuck the chapo guys and their fanboys.

This is libelous. I don't even like Chapo Trap House.

every single Jeopardy champion seems like a strange dude to me, with the exception of the guy who won it the most

ken jennings probably has some deep, dark secrets

i don't particularly like twitter war/culture personalities, but i still like Chu. he's generally on the right side of things even if he's clearly obnoxious and attention-seeking. but i'm definitely biased in favor of brash Asian American personalities of which there are so many ofc (kinda feel similarly conflicted about Eddie Huang)

Nhex, Friday, 23 June 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

yeah i liked him and was rooting for him for the same reason, but then it turned out he was bad. no shame in being wrong sometimes!

k3vin k., Friday, 23 June 2017 18:46 (six years ago) link

favourite chu related content:

when he tweeted that watching gay porn gave him a taste of being objectified like women get all the time

the tweets from his ex-wife about the drudgery of cleaning up for him and cooking for him

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 23 June 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

i just like how the latter exist and he has the temerity to smear 'brocialists' with the same

global tetrahedron, Friday, 23 June 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link

there are no brocialists.

there are no sjws.

these are caricatures.

arthur chu is one of the people who believes in the reality of caricatures/twitter phantoms.

life is not a meme war.

Treeship, Friday, 23 June 2017 19:38 (six years ago) link

did he quit his job after winning jeopardy? he posts to twitter about a thousand times a day, i can't imagine how he has time to do anything else.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 23 June 2017 19:40 (six years ago) link

he actually makes money off being an internet celebrity/pundit which tbh i can see makes even more hatable

Nhex, Friday, 23 June 2017 19:44 (six years ago) link

why u jelly

Οὖτις, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:11 (six years ago) link

twitter phantoms give him reason to continue existing in his current form so

global tetrahedron, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

btw clown me endlessly for my old comments here:
LONG DUK DONG

I think he went from using his newfound fame to write about things he knew, from his own perspective, to a point where he's commenting on things for the sake of keeping the ball rolling

it's easy to have a conversation with a few people, decide you've come up with some interesting take on things, and then put it in front of a different person who immediately points out you had a group consensus but it was overall a bad idea. if you're glued to twitter 24/7 you're going to think something a few hundred people were rabidly chasing down the rabbit hole for a day has great importance. but it's just an extension of the "people in a room come to a conclusion" problem

afaict most of his new material is in service to that kind of thing, or weird observations like the gay porn comment jim mentioned

mh, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

his first columns definitely weren't bad, let alone what he seems to shit out on social media every day now

Nhex, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

he has multiple-tweet personal takes on news issues, usually controversial ones, nearly every hour. I'm assuming it's in the hopes one of them catches and he gets a boost of twitter fame, or as part of workshopping what to write a column about

mh, Friday, 23 June 2017 21:02 (six years ago) link

all i know about this guy is that he doesn't know how to put on sneakers
