Been listening to GT ULTRA all week. This is an absurdly good record.

There's a track that sounds like my favourite period of Devo.

"TV Do Tell"? I thought that was a total Buggles pastiche

flappy bird, Friday, 23 June 2017 15:20 (six years ago) link

That's the one. I can see that too.

This record is pretty much what I hoped The B-52's Mesopotamia was going to be before I heard it.

They're playing a record release show in Brooklyn tonight. Promoted as "a rare appearance." Apparently they haven't played live in nine months. I really hope they tour the USA this year.

p4k fairly lukewarm, for some reason this is buried as the 4th record review of the day, i don't get it: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/guerilla-toss-gt-ultra/

flappy bird, Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

pitchfork as TASTEMAKERS CHOICE. this is nervy art punk they would've gooed themselves over in 2002. i still like the sound, and this is good stuff in that vein.

jenkem street team (carpet_kaiser), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link

I haven't read Pitchfork in years, so I've thankfully not avoided good music like this by paying attention to their reviews

jenkem street team (carpet_kaiser), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:55 (six years ago) link

They need to make a movie that's like Spider-Man on the Loose or something. Just follows Spider-Man around a slow day where he fucks off and messes with people.

jenkem street team (carpet_kaiser), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:57 (six years ago) link

oh shit, wrong thread

jenkem street team (carpet_kaiser), Wednesday, 5 July 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

lol

yeah i agree, if this was the aughts they'd BNM'd this along with Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, No Age, etc... I only care about p4k reviews insofar as they effect a band's career and trajectory. reading between the lines of GT's recent fb post, it seems like they're not going to tour this record so the promo budget was probably pretty slim.

oh sick!

they're playing a Philly show in November, bummed they're not touring

flappy bird, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 20:14 (six years ago) link

ugh, unfortunately that Philly show's on a weeknight so I won't be able to make it. got excited there for a second.

anyway "skull dub" is pretty cool for what it is, looking forward to hearing the rest of these.

"Meteorological" is insanely great, the video as well as the song!

Gotta say I'm not into this new record at all, not a single song grabs me. Have only listened to it all the way thru maybe 3 times but it's a big step-down from Eraser Stargazer and GT ULTRA.

New EP, "What Would The Odd Do?", is a fantastic, frenetic ride. Very happy to hear it's creation is the outcome of the singer beating her addictions!

caught them live over the summer and they were fantastic, extremely locked in

every time I hear a GT song I'm like "whoa this sounds great, like Cardiacs!" out of the gate and then two minutes in they've lost me a bit. I should listen to them more though for sure

How the fuck did I forget that I thought the same thing when I listened to it

flappy bird, Monday, 22 June 2020 04:14 (three years ago) link

Guerilla Toss is one of the few bands that I have gone from firmly disliking to absolutely loving, I saw them in a basement in their screechy dissonant pre-DFA days and went upstairs like 5 or 10 minutes into their set, I hated it so much, but every release they've put out since they moved toward rhythms and melody I have loved more and more, it's cool to still feel this way after like 4 or 5 albums/EPs/singles
