thanks matthewK, not really feeling like that but it's nice to hear!

i spent way the fuck too long on this, "The Last Coffee"

http://68.media.tumblr.com/f0247a9ec04c8dab24b75e2b24a01371/tumblr_otq2c1igCZ1qdmmiqo1_500.gif

originally it was going to be the first gif in an epic series, but after spending like 20 hours on the first one alone, i abandoned the idea. so instead, here's my rough draft of what would have happened and you just have to use your imagination on what it might have looked like (better that way than if i actually done it, trust me)

1 the last coffee crawls and spills drops as it goes (see GIF above)

2 and 3 the last coffee continues to wander slowly, becoming a little bit more empty with each successive GIF. reveal title: “The Last Coffee"

4 coffee finds a sink drain and contemplates about the meaning of the drain

5 coffee begins to pour its final drops down the drain. title changes to “THE LOST COFFEE"

6 a dripping sound in the distance makes coffee stand up

7 pursues the source of the dripping noise

8 the coffee meets the coffeemaker

9 close up of coffee dripping into the carafe

10 close up of coffee man. his world will never be the same

11 the last coffee gets a refill

12 the coffeemaker begins to fill up another cup of coffee.

13 the so-called last coffee witnesses the birth of another coffee. again, his mind is blown

14 several more coffees are born

15 the new community of coffee emerges. title changes to “THE LAST OF THE COFFEEs"

16 co-mingling of coffees, garden of eden style perfection and joy and innocence

17 a human suddenly appears and grabs a coffee

18 human blows to cool it down

19 close up of extreme terror on coffee's face

20 chugging it down, coffee upside down, legs kicking frantically in air

terrifying moments in everyday life, brushing teeth by candlelight edition. i'm glad that you think it's horrifying! the humans in the story are just going to be doing normal things but their mere existence should completely freak the coffee person out.

i don't really like balloons but that was part of the request so

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 17:38 (six years ago) link

in other irl/commission sad news i was also asked out of the blue to work on an advertising campaign involving illustrations, the first time someone has offered to pay me in forever, and then i got really excited and responded shortly thereafter indicating my interest, and then they never responded

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 17:39 (six years ago) link

That sucks so much, sorry. I like the one you did w/ the balloons!

Do you have rates, like a flatrate for individual people and an hourly rate for businesses? Or are you figuring it out on the go?

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 17:43 (six years ago) link

honestly i get seldom get any offers to do anything so i haven't really established a set rate. some of the companies i've worked with have offered me a certain rate up front. others have asked me what what my rate is, and i make a guess of how long it will take me and try to offer a fair rate that reflects my beginner-hood but also compensates me fairly. so basically, figuring it out on the go. :)

at this point though i'm kind of desperate for anything. a couple years i made an ethical stand on a shoe company because they wanted me to sign my name on the GIF and personally endorse the shoe, and i didn't want to do that, so i backed out of the project. if they would ask me to do that now i would wear the shoe irl and sign my name 34 times all over the GIF and write "I LOVE THIS SHOE COMPANY" all over it

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link

Have you ever looked into doing something with Gifpop. I don't know the 'gif world' but they make a point of giving gif artists a fair share. They do limited runs of physical gif cards, for example.

xp Aww man, yeah I totally get where you're coming from. I for one *know* your big break will come though. Just hoping it's soon-ish. Like, now.

two weeks pass...

i've been working on a 25-gif "sticker pack" for giphy the last few weeks. the deadline is tight and the file restrictions have been challenging - keep it 500kb or less with dimensions of 618x618. normally i work with 490x490 and end up at around 2MB, so to cut down on the file size i've had to limit myself to 6 to 8 frame animations rather than the two or three dozen i usually end up with. on top of that, they're "stickers", which means they need to be transparent so they can be plastered into text messages (and on top of texts and images, depending on the messaging app you use). i rarely make transparent gifs, and quickly realized that i couldn't use any anti-aliasing, which i almost always use. anti-aliasing creates blended, "soft" semi-opaque pixels on edges so that it looks more realistic. but transparent gifs don't work well with anti-aliasing because they render the half-transparent pixels as either 0% or 100% transparency, which creates the really ugly blocks around the edges of some transparent GIFs.

anyway, since all of this flies in the face of what i've been making the last year or two, i revisited some of my older gifs (2011/12) that i made back when Tumblr had more restrictive file size limits for GIFs (it used to be 1MB! now it's ~3MB (some day it'll be hilarious to cite these numbers in the same way that we laugh at hardware capabilities from the 1960s). the old tumblr restrictions were kind of nice because they forced everyone to be more efficient. or actually, i think mainly people just ended up using lots of frames but downgrading the quality to absolute garbage level to get it under 1MB. but either way, i ran across an old 6 frame thing i did and reworked it a bit. this isn't the version that'll go into the sticker pack, but i like this one too:

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 September 2017 16:25 (six years ago) link

i finished the 25-GIF sticker pack, so if you're the kind of person who likes to use gifs in text messages you can check it out! you can find it on basically anything that uses giphy (facebook, iMessage, apps, etc) by searching for either #zachscott or #weinventyou. they're transparent, and if you have iMessage set up you can even plop them onto previous text messages and images that you've sent. it's kind of wild! they're supposed to be compiled into an official "pack" soon, which should hopefully make it easier to share to people. it's kind of weird to tell people you did something and then direct them to find it using hashtags. anyway, there were some big limitations in the requirements (which i rambled about above), but here are a few that i liked:

thanks forks and LBI!

currently they're all collected at the top of this page: https://giphy.com/weinventyou/ , but they'll slide down the page as i add more gifs in the future.
they look kind of crazy there because transparent images usually do, unless they're on a lighter background like in a text.

apparently Line (the Japanese messaging app) makes upwards of $250 million a YEAR on these kinds of stickers. so maybe after this last batch gets collected into more of an official pack (should be any time, i'm told?), i can reach out to Line to see if they'll pay me for some more.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 06:11 (six years ago) link

i DID find that interesting i now have a list of people he mentioned that i'll be checking out this afternoon, so thanks! plus i want to check out his other videos. it's a real gift to be able to cover huge topics like that in such a structured way. just really well done.

i'm not sure that he ever directly states that we're about to cross out of the uncanny valley, but i'm not sure that i agree. i have a really harebrained set of reasons why i think that's so, but maybe i'll see if i can revive your uncanny valley thread to elaborate because i'm sure 99% of ILX has learned not to click on this thread

sort of on the same topic, but i'm interested in making stuff that reflects back the uncanny valley effect, but using real life objects, sort of like this:

http://78.media.tumblr.com/83c6a26e3856b9454abe3b50c507c0bd/tumblr_ox9looUjSd1qdmmiqo2_500.gif

for christmas this year, if i can afford it, i'm going to try to buy myself a really basic photography/video setup with a white/green backdrop and some reflectors so that i can isolate objects more easily.

haha, well the effect would be less intense if you could see me crouched underneath the table shaking the legs, bumping my head on it over and over again while running over to my camera with a lens propped up on a pile of magazines in lieu of a functioning tripod. i really need to get some decent (ultra-budget) gear.

incidentally, i think that guy's thesis is that we are officially past the uncanny valley now and that the question is what do we do with what lies ahead

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 17 October 2017 17:13 (six years ago) link

my instinct earlier was that the far end of the uncanny valley is still quite a bit away. but i don't know, then i asked my partner what she thought, and she thought it was within sight, that there are already examples of digital creations that already fool us. and then i remembered peter cushing's character in star wars rogue one - i had no idea he was just CGI until long after i saw the movie. so in a sense, it already passed a form of the AI test. that would have been unthinkable 15 years ago, without some sort of camera trickery (like using a silhouette or having the character underwater or something). but rogue one showed peter cushing's character close-up, in good lighting, and with lines of dialogue. so the fact that it's been done suggests that other AI efforts will also soon fool the human eye. and that's just the characters - environmental effects often fool the eye as well.

so maybe he's right.
