Techno for example does not seem a good choice as it is too straight, not subtle enough
not true ime! techno is some of my favorite music to listen to after smoking a little
― marcos, Saturday, 17 June 2017 22:12 (six years ago) link
Agree with marcos - find that a slowed down pot mind can make it easier to enjoy faster music (Drukqs comes to mind). I don't always find this is the case with stimulants on the other hand

Should we define stoned
― calstars, Saturday, 17 June 2017 22:43 (six years ago) link
I don't think music with more than 100 bpm is enjoyable when stoned.
cannot cosign, a LOT of grind bands basically smoke as much pot as they can and then play as fast as they can and it's glorious. Brutal Truth while high is a fucking thrillride

Context. When they showed up *nothing* else sounded like them. They were being stupidly hailed as a "black jesus & Mary Chain" but, besides the judicioususe of guitar feedback, nothing could have been further from the truth. They were doing the layers of blissful guitars and swoony vocals some years before MBV and others took up the mantle.

But it's cool. I know plenty of folks who can't stand AR Kane and then there are those few, like me, who'll be forevah smitten.

A.R.Kane were grouped into a thing that was dubbed Oceanic Rock with some other bands who were pretty unique at the time.I think Hugo Largo, Saqqara Dogs and a few others. THink that was about 88 so before Loveless.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 15:07 (six years ago) link
That Oceanic Rock thing is a Simon Reynolds moniker. I *do* remember AR Kane being the first people I ever heard use the term "Dreampop" (describing themselves).

When I was a kid I checked Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man out of the library thinking it was the H.G. Wells sci-fi novel! Anyway, I read about a hundred pages, fully expecting the unnamed downtrodden African American narrator to eventually become a scientist, invent an invisibility potion and go nuts or something. Which he never does, obviously.
Regardless, the book's introductory first chapter smells strongly of sci-fi: Invisible Man lives anonymously in a hidden room in the sewers filled with thousands of light bulbs powered by stolen electricity. He describes how one time he tried to bum a cigarette and someone gave him a marijuana cigarette instead; how he got stoned and listened to Louis Armstrong and his perception of time changed profoundly and things like that. Twelve year old Liam was all like, "Whoa! Weed makes music better!?", a fact he never forgot and eventually found was perfectly true.
Anyway, I'll second Invisible Man and nominate Louis Armstrong's protostoner Hot 5's and 7's as basically peerless weed music. Even the lo-fi time-weathered nature of these records, and also the fact that they are artifacts from what is basically an alien culture at this remove, adds for me a kind of inimitable smoky/ghostly mystique to it all. The stuff has aged like the finest of weed-flavored wines.

If you're into Achim Reichel The Insides' Euphoria lp has a lot of echoplex sounding guitar. Lovely lp alongside a 20 something female singer's angst filled lyrics. Well worth checking out, not sure about getting stoned to.

honestly, this totally depends on my mood AND the type of weed. Mental high = probably cerebral music of some kind: modern classical, Philip Glass, arch avant prog, absract electronic music. OR just listening to whatever I'm into at that moment, and probably hearing new things. When the high wears off, something a lot less demanding of my attention, and probably something I'm really familiar with.
Body high = do I even want to listen to music, or just watch TV? Or talk. If music, then probably something that goes well in the background (and again, familiarity is key). I feel like when a lot of people talk about "music to get stoned to", this is the state they mean.
