When someone accidentally ends up in a turn-only lane when they want to go straight, and instead of putting a turn signal on, stopping and waiting for an opportunity to get into the proper lane, just keeps going forward parallel to another car, trying to outrace it. It feels crazy, since you're not expecting there to be a car right next to you after the lane ends.

I actually drafted mine! What's been postponed is the meeting between me, my team lead, and the program manager, where they actually give me feedback. When it comes to meetings in general, I'm more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, and the postponements are just ramping up the tension. I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!

However things work out, j.lu, your instincts are probably right that you can and should look for something new.

If your review goes well, it shows you're of value, and you deserve a workplace that doesn't make you this anxious. If it goes poorly, well, then, that's evidence that it's not a great fit and it's to everyone's benefit for you to find a greener pasture.

Another traffic thing which shits me is people who break a traffic rule supposedly out of courtesy, e.g. appearing to give way to you when they're not supposed to, but leave you wondering what they're going to do because they seem to regard traffic rules as a kind of guideline subject to personal waiver. e.g. letting you cross their lane while stopped at lights, but continuing to inch forward a bit so you're not sure if the gap will be there when you try to take up the offer. Argh I'm not expressing this properly, contributing to IA.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 21:57 (six years ago) link

I know what you mean. that drives me nuts too cos the 'charity' only winds up annoying the people behind that driver and contributing to a more dangerous situation since the person they're accommodating isn't expecting the gesture.

in other words - "just go"

i don't know if this is irrational anger or not, but the fact that streaming services have destroyed the dvd rental market at least in the area i live means my options are limited when it comes to tracking down a lot of movies. i've been buying more dvds lately, since some aren't available on the streaming services or at the library, and i won't do netflix by mail (i mean does that even still exist anymore, idk.) we had a really good dvd store near us, lots of deep selections, foreign films, etc, but they shut their doors a couple years ago.

when you slow or stop your car to let someone get across the street, and they always give you a courtesy wave and like .5 seconds of hustle, like they're launching themselves off the curb, but as soon as they step out into the road they just take their time.

yeah sorry, I'm gonna support this one. Cars have right of way and it annoys me when I courteously wait at a kerb and a car just stops and waves me on, and I'm like... "but you can just go, I'll wait". and we do this little dance then I give up and walk across. I'll take my time when I do so if you didn't wanna go first when you have the right to, not my problem! ;P

When turning at any intersection (except at a roundabout), you must give way to any pedestrians crossing the road you are entering.

what about pedestrians crossing the road you're leaving? this is unclear and stupid and now i'm irrationally angry

cosign Trayce, the driver is making a big show of saving you the 0.02 seconds it would have taken them to go past, and in return you're expected to express gratitude and leap across the road to reciprocate. Just drive buddy, I've been pedestrianing for 4 decades and I got this.

i got IA this morning at an intersection when i arrived at the same time as another driver and i waved them to go, and then they wouldn't go but instead did that thing where they waved for ME to go. i swear 80% of the time when i motion for the other driver to go first they refuse. it's not even them being polite, it's something else. someone waves for me to go, i just do it. idgi.

this happens with walking as well. i'm about to cross the street and a car is waiting to go, i motion them ahead and they'd apparently rather wait for me to cross the street in front of them. idk

Josefa, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 05:24 (six years ago) link

There's a busy two-lane one-way street that separates one building of my kids' daycare from another. The crossing guard is pretty good about getting out there to stop traffic, but on some days, Beeps and I are left on our own to fend the raging torrent.

Not a big deal. There's a light up the block and a light down the block, so the traffic comes in waves. However, like this morning, we'll get a straggler who decides to be such a Good Samaritan, coming to a dead stop and trying to wave us on. Meanwhile, another wave surges behind him.

Keep in mind this is a two-lane avenue, so even if traffic was to stop behind him, there's still the other lane to traverse. It's dangerous and for us to cross out of turn like that sets a really bad example to the Beepster holding my hand next to me. Meanwhile, the surge arrives and the driver gets all mad and peels out down the road because we didn't take advantage of his good intentions. Now I know how you broads must feel when you don't smile after a fella suggests that you do.

Oh, don't get me started. On pedestrian crossings where pedestrians have the right of way when I'm crossing and a car comes barreling along too quickly and aggressively before grudgingly coming to a stop, I slow riiiiiigght down to a crawl just to annoy them even more.

Yes but that's kinda crap because cars don't actually have to stop unless you're actually on the crossing, so those drivers (including a black cab driver!) are being polite and driving sensibly by slowing down to a stop and so, like everyone else on the planet, don't deserve to have the pish ripped out of them by that cunt, Dom Joly.

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 10:57 (six years ago) link

Looks like that thaffic thing is a standing problem and wi8ll continue to be until you can sitreverybody down together, all umpteen billion and make sure they're on the same page. & then there will be other drivers 2 years later who either didn't hear the first time or forgot about it.
But does seem to be something that is widespread and p-s off people all over the place and will continue to do so.

But locally wondering how long it takes to install a set of traffic lights after they've been up for something like 3 weeks, pointed in an odd direction and not plugged in. & initial pole was installed possibly 3 weeks before that.

Also drivers who park in such a way that pedestrians can't use the pavement. Went by a van that seemed to be parked in such a way that nobody could access the local shopping area from one of the residential sides. Especially if they had a pram, wheelchair or mobility vehicle. Up on the pavement in from the crash barrier that was erected a few months ago to prevent people being able to go straight onto the carpark. Never get why somebody would be so mindless about parking , but i don't drive and only see the effect of bad parking. Not the moments saved by parking more intelligently.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 11:12 (six years ago) link

I do like being let across if there's a stream of traffic with no big gaps, but it's awkward when a single driver with no queue waves me across: I have slow reactions and it seems like time stands still while I try to coordinate my movements while double-checking in all directions, and it's probably no quicker for either of us than if they just went past

the worst, though, is when a car slows right down without stopping or making it obvious that they're prepared for me to cross - I understand that it's good to be safe and make sure you can brake in time if need be, but great, way to slow us both down

(oh my god a whole extra 15 seconds until I can get to the shop! possibly 30 if there's more traffic behind them! so impatient, I know...)

cars don't actually have to stop unless you're actually on the crossing

I like it when they do, though, otherwise it's like, OK, I have to step out into the road to make traffic stop, but if I step out into the road and traffic doesn't stop, I might die. thanks, good choice!

(there's a crossing near me where traffic goes p. fast and doesn't generally stop if you just stand at the edge staring across the road, which you would never be stood next to if you didn't want to cross, there's nothing else there except a footpath crossing the road. it makes me nervous)

I was reading all about UK zebra crossings on wikipedia the other night. Took me awhile to figure out what it meant when it said that the little squiggly lines before the zebra show where a car is not permitted to stop. I thought, well how does a driver yield to pedestrians then?

pplains, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:41 (six years ago) link

So much OTM IA re automotive traffic.

I maintain that politeness has no place in any situation where cars are involved. You follow the rules and you go when it's your turn. Don't wave anyone on, patiently wait your turn regardless of how long it takes to get your turn. Them's the breaks, and if you don't like it you can grab your bindle and thumb a ride to work.

Of course, but drivers are supposed to slow when approaching a pedestrian crossing, and you literally only have to have one foot on the crossing, not really in the road as such, for them to have to stop. Unfortunately, London, in particular, is full of a lot of entitled cretins who can't drive.
