Incidentally I saw KD live a few weeks ago - I thought it was going to be a full band show, instead it was solo. I was a bit disappointed at first but he was great. I teared up in public like a good emo kid.

Also he mentioned we can expect another Bad Books record at...some point

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

yesssss

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 14:17 (six years ago) link

OH and imo the new Chastity Belt record counts as emo and it's *great*

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:21 (six years ago) link

lol i found that record extremely dull but chastity belt are not for me

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

I can definitely understand that, they're (purposely) not very dynamic, but they key into an emotional register that really works for me

http://www.spin.com/featured/best-emo-revival-albums-ranked/

list made me realize that even though i start this thread every year i don't like very many emo revival bands lol

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:01 (six years ago) link

mostly i think the best album on that list by a mile (hop along) is there under false pretenses

also that driver friendly's bury a dream is better than any album on there

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:10 (six years ago) link

missing some other obv choices some of which rated highly in our poll

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:12 (six years ago) link

i would like to go on record suggesting that modern baseball record is only half good

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:16 (six years ago) link

wait, modern baseball broke up?

rip, they were OK

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 23:19 (six years ago) link

I prefer the previous modern baseball record tbh

there's a bunch on there I haven't heard yet!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 June 2017 02:12 (six years ago) link

btw the SN show was bonkers good

Mordy, Thursday, 15 June 2017 03:05 (six years ago) link

Going through that list. Keep You is so much better than The Lack Long After, I have no idea why people prefer PBTT in screamo mode.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 June 2017 14:21 (six years ago) link

and i def don't think the albatross is better than dealer, or whenever, if ever (ugh so dull) is better than harmlessness

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 June 2017 14:56 (six years ago) link

so it's so weird during the obsessives set they kept bringing these guys up to sing the songs but they couldn't really carry a tune and they didn't really know the songs (they kept looking at their phones to sing/read the lyrics). is this something they normally do or what

Mordy, Thursday, 15 June 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link

I didn't hate that Spin list. Maybe 1 album per band would have helped a touch, especially when it's 30. Weird to exclude Waxahatchee but not Swearin.' Feel like that first Waxahatchee record is more suitably emo.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, 15 June 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

Is there a rolling punk thread this year?

I Hate Sex have some screamo qualities so I guess they're ok here.

I was just asking off-board about the "rolling punk/non-indie underground" threads, which seem to have stopped in 2015?

fuckit, I made one: Rolling punk/non-indie underground 2017

THERE'S AN I HATE SEX ALBUM?!??!?!?!?!

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:38 (six years ago) link

Dude I can't wait to hear the whole thing.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 17:44 (six years ago) link

the Tigers Jaw record is boringly pleasant yet pleasantly boring?

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

also *really* enjoying the Mystery Weekend record - full of fun little twists and turns crammed into 26 mins. I knew I recognized the singer, took me a minute to realize it was the Protest the Hero guy!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 20:11 (six years ago) link

tigers jaw are generally pleasantly boring. they almost get there every time. great musicians though

new manchester orchestra record might be my aoty? best rock band in the world right now especially since brand new are like never going to release another record

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 22 June 2017 19:13 (six years ago) link

yeah i like that song! kinda interested if it'll diverge from peripheral vision more than that

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 June 2017 20:14 (six years ago) link

I'm sort of obsessed with "Change Irreversible" and this sounds totally in that ballpark so I'm pleased

both manorch (love that shorthand) singles are really really nice

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 22 June 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

I'm not sure where to put this song--I get a Weakerthans vibe from the lyrics (emo?), and they're on SideOne Dummy (pop/punk?)--so I'm putting it here. Point is, I'm loving it.

They opened for Beach Slang a couple of years ago. I liked their 2015 album Imaginary Life quite a bit. "Plans" is great. If this is an indication of where they're going with their sound, I'm in.

worriers rule

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 26 June 2017 14:45 (six years ago) link

so Creeper's Eternity, In Your Arms is basically the UK response to The Black Parade huh

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 08:18 (six years ago) link

oh shit i finally got around to listening to that creeper record and imo this is the record that comes closest to collapsing the pop-punk/glam metal dichotomy, it's so ambitious and embarrassing. i LOVE it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 July 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link

hahaha I was hoping you'd be into it!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 July 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

their economy is really impressive!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 July 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

oh thank god i'm not the only person who likes that album i'm not totally crazy

Mordy, Thursday, 6 July 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

ilx album of the year, i'm calling it

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 July 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

lol

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 July 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

I'm listening to this again and at least 20 bands have sprung to mind over the first 5 tracks, it's really something

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 July 2017 21:06 (six years ago) link

sorta wish the record had mcr-quality sharpness in its production, it's real foggy sounding, but that's my only complaint so far

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 July 2017 21:21 (six years ago) link

has anyone heard this record from 2011? would've been a good fit in our emo poll tbh

this is nice, how did you find it?

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 7 July 2017 15:35 (six years ago) link

someone posted it in the manchester orchestra thread on chorus.fm

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 7 July 2017 15:55 (six years ago) link

the opening track on the Turtlenecked record really reminds me of Say Anything

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 8 July 2017 16:14 (six years ago) link

absolutely loving the Katie Ellen record (also x-posted to the twee thread)
