I request Alfred to buy one of these spots so we can all visit and stay for free.

I'm so obsessed with that fucking singing Na'vi shamen animatronic. It's horrifying and sexual and beautiful and sickening

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 9 June 2017 19:11 (six years ago) link

We need you to go to Florida and create the unauthorized sequel to Escape From Tomorrow, except, you know, good.

Tower of Terror was always a pretty lame ride, but the new GotG reboot of it is even worse.

i liked tower of terror, because we got on it with our 5 year old, not realizing what it was like, because there was no line, and then my wife and kid almost died from screaming while on it.

akm, Friday, 9 June 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

I rode it for the first time since '94 in January and it scared the shit out of me.

I liked ToT, sad to see it go.

Okay Alfred, if you could handle the booking

https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-star-wars-theme-park-in-florida-will-include-a-comp-1796952453

For example, you may see Chewbacca around talking to Hondo. They’re up to no good and could be recruiting a group of people to go on a mission. So then you’d go on the Millennium Falcon ride, one of two in the park. Based on how you and your crew does on that ride (the ride will allow each individual person to have their own job aboard the Falcon), you could get some extra republic credits afterward, or maybe a stern talking-to. If you’re really, really bad though, bounty hunters might hunt you throughout the park, like a new one named Harcos.

There will also be a Cantina—it was a hinted there may be booze there—and the music will be courtesy of a new DJ. It’s Rex, the former pilot of Star Tours.

That’s just one example of how things will work. However, another major announcement has to do specifically with Galaxy’s Edge in Walt Disney World in Orlando. There, it was announced, Disney is planning a 100 percent immersive Star Wars hotel. That means everyone there will act like they are in Star Wars. You become a citizen once you check in, and every minute of your experience will be Star Wars. You may even have the option to dress up as the character you want to be.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 July 2017 00:31 (six years ago) link

As someone asked:

Can I threaten a kid and get my arm cut off in the cantina?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 July 2017 00:32 (six years ago) link

Plus a slew of other Orlando things

My 50th birthday is in 2023. Might head for Orlando with a fistful of acid and start looking for droids.

pplains, Sunday, 16 July 2017 00:36 (six years ago) link

Maybe they'll let it cross over into that Avatar thing and bounty hunters can burn the place down.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 July 2017 00:38 (six years ago) link

Hmm. I return in November!

Huh to a lot of those things. Immersive experiences with cast in character reads a little Renn Faire.

currently plotting trip to Disneyland in February, kids are reaching ideal age-range

kinda dreading Star Wars land though. Do Stormtroopers walk around carrying guns cuz if so I am so not into that.

Star Wars stuff won't be open in February

the pirates have guns, though

right, but that's in the ride, which I'm less concerned about

it's the "armed guys walking around while we all have fun" dynamic that feels fundamentally un-Disneylike to me

I saw the stormtrooper parade at Hollywood Studios – it's pretty good! My nieces loved it.

you might still see stormtroopers. I would treat the whole park as a ride.

hey, so we're heading to disneyworld this march w/ the 2 kids (6&4) and baby (8m) for 3 and a half days. i feel like it's going to be a herculean task making sure everyone has fun and there's no meltdowns. any advice re what guide to get or anything like that?

Mordy, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:28 (six years ago) link

are there actually *any* 4yos that go 3 1/2 days w out meltdowns, asking for a friend

Οὖτις, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:29 (six years ago) link

Perfect age for the kids, really. Disney was not only built to steal your entire net worth, but to make your kids enjoy it. Your older ones are beyond full-blown meltdown age. Is your 8m old walking yet?

Randall Jarrell (dandydonweiner), Friday, 17 November 2017 17:30 (six years ago) link

well he's def not walking yet since he's only 4m atm.

Mordy, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:31 (six years ago) link

lol sorry for my misread.

The hardest part is that the rides you might want to ride have hellish lines and the only way around those lines is a second mortgage to pay for the privilege.

Things that surprised me about Disney:
- they generally make everything great for little kids, and lines for most stuff is tolerable
- there are a lot of rides for really little kids
- there are a lot of big people

Randall Jarrell (dandydonweiner), Friday, 17 November 2017 17:38 (six years ago) link

you have to pay extra for an easy pass whatever now?

Mordy, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:39 (six years ago) link

I'll be in WDW for Thanksgiving.

Mordy, The Unofficial Guide is acerbic and thorough.

Is the Avatar ride worth a 3 hour wait?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 10 March 2018 16:09 (six years ago) link

Was Avatar worth its 3 hour runtime?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 10 March 2018 16:10 (six years ago) link

Haha, we tried re-watching Avatar this past week to warm up for this trip and my son had never seen it. Made it half way through. Maybe I should wait in the line for an hour, then leave?

They could actually play the movie for people waiting in line because probably 90% of them don't recall what it was about. Of course, that may make the wait feel more like 6 hours.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 10 March 2018 16:25 (six years ago) link

We decided to go on the Avatar boat ride instead because the wait was only 1 1/2 hours. The ride was slow, but colorful with some cool visual effects. It lasted about 3 minutes overall. I'm glad I tried it, but wouldn't do it again unless the line was much shorter.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 10 March 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

It's unfortunate that Animal Kingdom doesn't have a fireworks show because I would recommend hitting the popular rides then. I didn't think I'd even get to go on the new Snow White thing last time I was there because of 90-minute wait times I didn't care to indulge, but once the fireworks started, the line cleared out completely and we rode it something like six times in a row.

Ape Wipes (Old Lunch), Saturday, 10 March 2018 17:29 (six years ago) link

I love the design details of Animal Kingdom. Food, too!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 10 March 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

We are in line for the main Avatar ride now. It appears to have shrunk considerably during lunch.

We were considering trying the line during tonight's light show, but then noticed that it had emptied out while we were eating.
