it is with a heavy heart i come to the realisation that there is almost certainly a furry-themed gangnam style parody video out there somewhere :(

this nightmarish discovery is going to fuck up my youtube recommendations for years to come isn't it

In the words of Boltair is incredible, i didn't skip a beat and assumed this had to be either a video game character (maybe a Transformer?) and/or an alt-right Pepe Twitter person, hero of the continuing Gamergate underground survivors, named after such a character

lol at suggesting they change the game for America, coming right on the heels of complaining about "the outright censorship of art through 'localization' policies"

i think what they really mean by that is that they can't buy hentai games at target

i just looked up the premise for the game and its not even nearly as outrage-baiting as i expected

ok fr it's way more likely one of these chuds would know it was "Voltaire" by sight but, never having heard it irl, thinks it's pronounced "VOL-tar-RAY" or something

the voltaire quote probably shows up on boltair's gamertag or something

'Dangerous' is a stretch. Unless you count the potential for retaliatory swatting.

In the words of Boltair (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 12:03 (six years ago) link

an alternative, some might say the correct, way to look at this is that gamers have proved to be such a vocal bunch of whining, entitled pissbabies that the parody petition was indistinguishable from any actually legit gamergate-aligned petition

pro tip, anybody who describes GamerGate as "the consumer-driven movement for ethics in games journalism" is vermin and can be safely ignored

one year passes...

The Guild Wars community (air quotes) just harassed a female developer (and a male developer who stood up for her) out of a job for being uppity enough to call out what she felt was a gender-related microaggression.

Here is the completely unremarkable exchange that sparked the shitstorm:

Today in being a female game dev:

"Allow me--a person who does not work with you--explain to you how you do your job." https://t.co/lmK0yJWqGB

— Jessica Price (@Delafina777) July 4, 2018

The gamers cried, a lot: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/8w3q4n/must_be_a_thrill_to_work_with_this_dev/?st=jj9bes2e&sh=7f012da4

The company that makes the game rolled over: https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/comment/586426#Comment_586426

I don't play this game, just noticed a link related to it. This kind of thing probably happens so often that it's become unremarkable.

Dan I., Friday, 6 July 2018 01:46 (five years ago) link

I play a lot of video games--too much, honestly, more than I want to--and I have since I was like 5 years old, and I think it is fucking creepy that "gamer" has become something that can form the core of a person's identity. Gamer culture, such as it is, is fucking fascistic.

Dan I., Friday, 6 July 2018 01:50 (five years ago) link

I dunno. Read through all that and it seems to me like the dev freaked out on him for seemingly no reason. He wasn't being an asshole to her in his reply. And while the shitstorm did bring out a few pretty unfortunate gamergate stereotypes, most replies were just criticizing her for being rude to him instead of engaging in conversation with his points like a normal person would.

how's life, Friday, 6 July 2018 12:19 (five years ago) link

Being rude to a customer should definitely get you and your friends fired, every time

Who the fuck still plays Guild Wars

El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 13:00 (five years ago) link

Fair enough, I guess. Just seems like the entire episode would have passed completely unremarked upon if it was a prickly dude who was the dev (think Linus). Instead, thousands of users immediately rallied around the very important cause of getting this woman fired

Dan I., Friday, 6 July 2018 14:24 (five years ago) link

I was being sarcastic

People who self-identify as “gamers” would appear to be the thinnest-skinned dipshits alive

I only follow army vets and lesbians on Twitch

El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 14:30 (five years ago) link

most replies were just criticizing her for being rude to him

The problem even with these replies is that the cumulative effect is basically a mob. I can understand someone's impulse on seeing that exchange to want to defend Deroir, but when thousands of people have that same impulse, you end up with a pile-on which is totally out of proportion to the original exchange. I also don't see many people on those threads arguing for the response to be scaled back from 'fire them now!'

jmm, Friday, 6 July 2018 14:43 (five years ago) link

I don’t understand the impulse to defend him at all. He’s a fucking overprivileged adult, he can handle himself. It’s all pathetic.

El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

Man, I just don't see where he's being over-privileged. He just made a normal-ass, inquisitive response to her (heretofore very thoughtful) run of tweets and for some reason she basically accuses him of mansplaining, subsequently calling him an asshat. He did nothing wrong. She started off wrong and then doubled down.

But I'll stay out of it. I'm not a gamer and I only saw this thread bc we can't choose what boards go on SNA on the mobile app lol.

I also don't see many people on those threads arguing for the response to be scaled back from 'fire them now!'

Didn't see any tweets of that nature, but there were definitely some in the message board thread.

how's life, Friday, 6 July 2018 15:16 (five years ago) link

I mean the guy seems like he doesn't have a lot to worry about

El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link

in a vacuum these sort of things might look overblown but in the context of the games industry since 2014 there's more to it

ciderpress, Friday, 6 July 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

The whole gamergate thing had an element of wanting to consider gaming to be an artform but then refusing to allow it to be critiqued, and campaigning against anyone (or any woman) who dared to do that. Seems like their criticism of her is basically the same, except this time a woman is on the other side of the equation, so they've switched sides too. Maybe that's all that matters.

https://kotaku.com/guild-wars-2-writers-fired-for-calling-out-fan-on-twitt-1827401422

“We can probably fire anyone on the GW2 dev team as long we make a big enough stink,” wrote GW2 subreddit member 5NightsAtUndert413 in a now-deleted post. “Nobody at Arenanet is safe from the hand of Reddit... The moment a dev steps out of line or try to talk back to a player, guess what, they’ll know we got their hands on their throat and we can squeeze any time we like.”

I feel comfortable assuming this ass hat represents the majority of GW2 players and that ArenaNet is totally OK with this

guessing these chuds have IRL never squeezed their hands around anything other than their own lonely cocks

jfc that reddit post is maybe the most embarrassing shit i’ve read on the internet

circa1916, Saturday, 7 July 2018 18:48 (five years ago) link

idgi people give creators shit whether they are female or not. framing it this specific way seems like a surefire way to bait the scum of the Earth into attacking you. i mean this is kind of bait:

"Allow me--a person who does not work with you--explain to you how you do your job."

i dont get why you would even use Twitter in a public way if you didn't want people you don't work with commenting on your job.

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

reading that thread, she was looking for a fight, it has nothing to do with her as a person and is entirely about game design, she responds with a condescending "thanks for trying to tell me what we do internally, my dude 9_9" and things go to shit as people fall all over each other trying to call out someone for politely contributing to a public conversation.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:24 (five years ago) link

Sometimes it's just not possible to reclaim a term. But yes, a good thread, probably getting hi lots of hate atm.

https://www.polygon.com/2018/7/13/17566068/banned-twitch-streamers-youtube-slurs-language

...others argued that terms like “gay” and “fag” evolved online. People claim that because the terms are used so often online, and supposedly without any malice, then our own understanding of how these words should be able to change. This argues kids who grow up on the internet, and see words like “gay” and “fag” slung around as casual supplements for words like stupid, frustrating, or annoying, wouldn’t think twice about using a slur because it’s not how the word was introduced into their vocabulary.

I wonder if these fucking idiots ever wonder about why society at large sees fit to ostracize them, besides the fact that we’re all normie chads or whatever
