i feel you on that but i think amber and felix have great chemistry when they're riffing like in this episode (and i say that as someone who usually finds felix kind of tiring).

yeah this was one of amber's best eps, she may have not been out of her gourd for once lol

I wish Amber's other podcast wasn't with Sam Kriss (who's pretty much unreadable and unlistenable to me) - usually feel like she's the most on the ball Chapo or at least less enamored with Twitter humor.

China Mieville interview didn't make me want to read his book on the Russian revolution any more (and I'm a fan); I can understand a leftist backlash to characterising that period as entirely evil and catastrophic but seeing Lenin as flawed but admirable is kinda where I draw the line. Lots of cool imagery though.

Loving the Newsroom episode.

as a relatively early pioneer of online sorkin hatred I have found these eps extremely saitsfying

Not as down on the West Wing as they are (the benefits of not watching it since it was on air) but I could only make it to the end of Jeff Daniels' stupid speech in the pilot. Sounds like it managed to get even worse, I almost want to hate watch it to see him cockblock himself repeatedly.

so felix's bio on wapo says he is a "mindset expert," is that dirtbag slang, a chapo in-joke, or like an actual popular culture/occupational role?https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2017/05/25/face-it-the-body-slammed-reporter-did-just-what-you-would-have-done/?utm_term=.c55f4459aef8#comments

so is felix gonna be a wapo contributor or is this a one off?

it is a chapo in-joke. mike cernovich calls himself "america's leading mindset expert"

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 25 May 2017 19:18 (six years ago) link

ha, i had googled it, and found cernovich near the top and figured it was in-joke tbh.

they're on a roll this week, bonus free episode yesterday about the UK election and a premium episode today about Texas congressional politics and pathologies.

flappy bird, Thursday, 8 June 2017 00:16 (six years ago) link

uk election episode was an okay primer apart from will's slightly jarring enthusiasm for the ira, which i imagine sounds distinctly different to listeners on this side of the atlantic

the previous free episode with the rankings of conservative publications was fun but i wish they'd structured it a bit differently than having will just read chunks of the author's own article back at him

Might skip this one, not sure I like the idea of Chapo taking UK politics seriously.

what happened with Cross? i received a first-hand interviewer account a few years ago that suggested he's a rather nutty person.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 8 June 2017 11:58 (six years ago) link

nothing really, their celeb interview/guest episodes are just consistently not that interesting

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 June 2017 11:59 (six years ago) link

The Cross episode was kind of fun because he objected to the premise of about 90% of their twitter boi jokes

I dug this:

Listening to Champagne Sharks (CS 004: Bill Maher and Civility Rights)

This week I discuss Bill Maher using the word nigger, the impotence of black public intellectuals, and the concept of Civility Rights.

Articles discussed include "What Are The Drums Saying, Booker?"
Book discussed briefly is The Image by Daniel Boorstin.

I've been enjoying Champagne Sharks though he could use an editor - the Hamilton one really didn't need to be a full 2 hrs

the concept of Civility Rights

thought this was really cool. the idea that branding oneself as polite/not rude being more important than the content of what you are saying/doing? he ties it into a lot of current things but is not super serious about it, just exploring different perspectives on these topics.

their post-uk-election euphoria on today's episode is fun

it's nice to hear them jubilant about...anything, really

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 15:45 (six years ago) link

mind you if i never hear them attempt an ulster accent ever again it'll be too soon

it's amazing to me that Matt can go off on these incredible & engaging monologues about leftism and existentialism, and then reverts to idiotic jokes about Tesco. it's just fucking 7/11 with a different name. whenever they do British accents or make fun of British stuff they sound like the typical and contemptible "LOL bacon" people that they love eviscerating themselves.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:53 (six years ago) link

also I've started listening to Cum Town way more religiously than Chapo. realizing they're just incredibly insufferable nerds ~40% of the time.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 16:54 (six years ago) link

tesco is not comparable to 7/11 mate

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

more like 9/11 amirite tesco shareholders

i mean, we could have a poll, Tesco vs. 7/11, but they're both just convenience stores. it was embarrassing hearing Matt ask Jonathan Shainin what Tesco was like, as if it were Oz or something. again, "LOL bacon" level humor.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 17:24 (six years ago) link

tesco is a supermarket chain that has smaller branches called tesco metros. theses are definitely much more in the grocery store vein than 7/11s which are really corner stores and are for carbonated drinks, taquitos, freezies, cigarettes and scratch cards rather than like fruit and vegetables, things to make a meal from

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 17:27 (six years ago) link

ok so it's analogous to Wawa or Sheetz here in the States. last time I went to a Tesco was in Dublin a few months ago and it was an express one iirc. self-checkout and all that

flappy bird, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 17:31 (six years ago) link

Ya when I was in a state of total despair at UK politics it was oddly comforting that these dudes just saw it as a half legendary faerie island inhabited by victorian Cockney elves. Could get grating in differeNT circs
