Personally, I think you people need to sit down and listen to Free Alterations by George Clinton.

Honestly, my Jill Jones pick would be Ryuchi Sakamoto's "You Do Me"

I was the only one to vote for "Mia Bocca"?! Don't you folks like Jill Jones?

I voted for Violet Blue.

This was a great poll. Thanks for all your hard work ArchCarrier.

Scanning from the bottom of the thread up, I thought that was someone's 911 song ballot!

Thanks again, ArchCarrier! This has been amazing. And OMG, I see now what you mean about the point difference between the two clear leaders and the rest of the pack!

Yes, and the voting stats of the rest of the top 10 are so close that they are practically tied. On any other day the order would have been slightly different.

The funny thing is that "Heartbeat" was sitting at number 1 until a day or two before the deadline. Only after the last five or six ballots came in it dropped to #5.

Happy with #1, though I can't lie: I prefer the '79 Prince version of the sing. It's his 2nd album's "When U Were Mine"

Heartbeat was the highest of anything from my ballot to place

So glad 'I Feel For You' won. It was one of the first singles I owned - I would have been five, saw it on Top of The Pops and had my dad get it for me. I haven't listened to it that much in the last 30 years, somehow, but finding it on shuffle when I was listening to the nominations here was such a revelation - it's just so full of perfect moments which just pile up on top of one another. I can think of quite a few perfect pieces of music, but none that are so full of stuff. And I kind of knew that it would be #1 somehow.

(The Prince original I heard for the first time, and afraid I found it a big let-down, just sounds like a very minor work, sorry)

Thanks to ArchCarrier for running this poll, and to the voters for introducing me to so much I hadn't heard before, and so much I found I had known for years without knowing its name.

one month passes...

nobody even nominated "Rocket 2 U," which i assume means everyone else, like me, completely forgot it existed when this poll was going on

This is driving me insane...do any of my 80s R&B headz recognize the interpolation at the chorus where he sings the title??

Several elements of the song sound like a de- and reconstruction of the Doobie Brothers' version of 'You Belong to Me':

If that's not quite it, it feels like the Doobies/Michael McDonald are a good first route of inquiry. That opening synth line is all them.

The chorus backing track sounds a bit like Wham "Everything She Wants" tbh.

I was going to say the backing track sounds like “yah mo be there”

One of his recent hits interpolated Eugene Wild

four years pass...

I'm a little late to the Alexander O'Neal party, because I only just discovered that 'Criticize' is the best song ever written.
