the part in the middle where everything drops away but the heartbeat gives me chills every time

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:38 (six years ago) link

The thing is, the idea of slowing down a disco tune to a heart beat sounds like obvious and easy, but it isn't. You can't just mechanically change your tempo, you gotta slow down your tone, your attitude, your whole sensibility. And no one has done it as perfectly as she and her backing here. It's too slow to dance, but it's too natural not to dance!

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:47 (six years ago) link

The bassline in Heartbeat is all-time.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

My #2. I only wish I could hear Heartbeat for the first time again.

Ρεμπετολογια, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

well now I've got "Buddy" stuck in my head

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:52 (six years ago) link

I cannot be mad at this at all, incredible song.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:53 (six years ago) link

Not thrilled, ILM.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:54 (six years ago) link

Perfect song.

kitchen person, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:54 (six years ago) link

Hey, all right!

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

But hey, I got to witness "Deeper and Deeper" land #3 on a Madonna poll. So my quota on poll happiness has been filled.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

Holy shit!!

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:56 (six years ago) link

oh wow nice :) a surprise toward the top

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:58 (six years ago) link

Okay, I have seven from my top 25 that still haven't placed, two are definitely going to show up, and roughly 3-4 of those remaining are just absolutely shameful omissions from the top 300. Shaaaaameful.

Sorry, accidentally posted that twice.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

wtf are you talking about, though

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

"Buffalo Stance" is a total surprise, wow! So "Smooth Criminal" didn't make it to the top 250 at all?! I was totally expecting it to be #4!

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:01 (six years ago) link

a) it is not too slow to dance to
b) you CAN just mechanically change your tempo, that's what tempo markings are for
c) the attitude and sensibility are driven by the overall content/intent of the song, not just the tempo

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

Yeah, my point was just that b without c wouldn't work at all, and here it works perfectly.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

I'm not going to be able to check in on the results until later on, I really hope Cameo win but really I can't complain about the three songs that are left. This whole top 10 has been fantastic. Excellent work everyone.

kitchen person, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

Can't remember where, but it was definitely in my top 10. What a track.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:06 (six years ago) link

i only voted for one of the top five so that's my guess for no. 1

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

Rooting for chaka obv

I did not expect any Bad tracks to show up in these results, and I was not disappointed by their absence.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:11 (six years ago) link

So Chaka, MJ, and Cameo in some order are pretty much a given at this point?

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

Gotta be

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:13 (six years ago) link

Ha sssucker!

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:14 (six years ago) link

the mj needs to be "wanna be startin' something'"

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

What else could it be?

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

I had a hunch WBSS would win this poll, and looks like it could happen. I wouldn't be disappointed with that, it is his best song, and he was the most emblematic R&B artist of the '80s. I Feel for You and Word Up! are both incredible performances, but as a pure song I think WBSS can't be beat, and it has an incredible performance too.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link

Yes. Wanna Be Starting Something is undeniable.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link

"word up" is great and iconic but i like "candy" better

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:24 (six years ago) link

otm

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:26 (six years ago) link

I voted Single Life but should've gone with Candy

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link

"Candy" > "Word Up"

that said, I rule karaoke with "Word Up"

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:28 (six years ago) link

I voted for 'Word Up' but it wasn't particularly high on my ballot.

Totes agree with Tuomas re: 'Wanna Be Startin' Something'. Nothing about the results of this poll has been at all predictable except which song would take the top spot.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link

i didn't expect "wanna be startin' somethin'" to even threaten for the top. i'm be delighted with it as a deserving and non-obvious winner :)

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link

Agreed, though its non-obviousness as a winner is fading fast (e.g. Pitchfork '80s #2, et al).

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:37 (six years ago) link

"Candy" > "Word Up"

Yup.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:37 (six years ago) link

The #1 and #2 were my #2 and #3, so I'm content.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:42 (six years ago) link

Shock-a Khan!!!!!

Something endearing about the idea of "Wanna Be Startin' Something'" as a perpetual second-best in every single runoff.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:47 (six years ago) link

hell yeah chaka!!

(unless it's not her in which case boo)

(altho that is def not happening lol)
