maze another victim of voters' tendency to overlook 'adult'/quiet stormish stuff that wasn't anita baker or sade (or "moments in love" lol)

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:47 (six years ago) link

xxpost Contrasted with her vocals on, say, 'Second Time Around', her solo stuff sounds so...muted? Restrained? Something.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:48 (six years ago) link

it is! that's part of the appeal imo

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link

Few songs have the same effect on my favorite old folks as "Before I Let Go."

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:50 (six years ago) link

i saw an entire field of ppl lose it to "before i let go" recently; i'm ashamed to admit that i *forgot* to vote for it, even though i placed "back in stride" really high in my ballot

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

I'm ashamed it only managed to get onto the lower unranked half of my ballot.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

FINALLY!

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:01 (six years ago) link

classic! but didn't have room for it on my ballot lol

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

My number 1 until a last minute swap out to George Benson because I always have this as number 1 when I make lists that it's eligible for.

I'll take number 6 I guess

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:04 (six years ago) link

should be no. 1

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

My number 1! Great to see it this high up.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link

So far nothing's gotten more than 1 #1 placement

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:13 (six years ago) link

I like this better than her version of "I Feel For You". I like "I Know You, I Live You" better than either, but that's not gonna place.

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:18 (six years ago) link

"I Know You" and "wha'cha Gonna Do" both deserved top 50 slots

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:20 (six years ago) link

This should have a couple really xxp

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

Quiet storm, apart from anything that crossed over to AC radio (or what my mom listened to on most car trips when I was a kid) is a huge blind spot for me. I don't typically love R&B ballads unless the chord changes are really rich - my dream is for someone to make me a playlist of 80s quiet storm stuff with lots of minor 7th and minor 9th chords.

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

xpost re: Chaka, That one is a pleasant surprise. It unfortunately dropped off the bottom of my ballot, but I'm glad y'all are here to make up for my unfortunate lapses in character.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

Aaaaand I don't think I know what the #5 best r&b song of the '80s even is.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

Well it's your lucky day then

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

Yay for Heartbeat! Never dreamed it would place this high, but what a beat, what a groove, what a time to be alive!

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:29 (six years ago) link

The high placement of this is probably my biggest surprise of the whole poll. It deserves to be here.

kitchen person, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link

yes!!

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:33 (six years ago) link

Now you know this don't make no kinda sense!

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

the part in the middle where everything drops away but the heartbeat gives me chills every time

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:38 (six years ago) link

The thing is, the idea of slowing down a disco tune to a heart beat sounds like obvious and easy, but it isn't. You can't just mechanically change your tempo, you gotta slow down your tone, your attitude, your whole sensibility. And no one has done it as perfectly as she and her backing here. It's too slow to dance, but it's too natural not to dance!

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:47 (six years ago) link

The bassline in Heartbeat is all-time.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

My #2. I only wish I could hear Heartbeat for the first time again.

Ρεμπετολογια, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

well now I've got "Buddy" stuck in my head

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:52 (six years ago) link

I cannot be mad at this at all, incredible song.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:53 (six years ago) link

Not thrilled, ILM.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:54 (six years ago) link

Perfect song.

kitchen person, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:54 (six years ago) link

Hey, all right!

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

But hey, I got to witness "Deeper and Deeper" land #3 on a Madonna poll. So my quota on poll happiness has been filled.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

Holy shit!!

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:56 (six years ago) link

oh wow nice :) a surprise toward the top

dyl, Thursday, 18 May 2017 18:58 (six years ago) link

Okay, I have seven from my top 25 that still haven't placed, two are definitely going to show up, and roughly 3-4 of those remaining are just absolutely shameful omissions from the top 300. Shaaaaameful.

Sorry, accidentally posted that twice.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

wtf are you talking about, though

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

"Buffalo Stance" is a total surprise, wow! So "Smooth Criminal" didn't make it to the top 250 at all?! I was totally expecting it to be #4!

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:01 (six years ago) link

a) it is not too slow to dance to
b) you CAN just mechanically change your tempo, that's what tempo markings are for
c) the attitude and sensibility are driven by the overall content/intent of the song, not just the tempo

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

Yeah, my point was just that b without c wouldn't work at all, and here it works perfectly.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

I'm not going to be able to check in on the results until later on, I really hope Cameo win but really I can't complain about the three songs that are left. This whole top 10 has been fantastic. Excellent work everyone.

kitchen person, Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

Can't remember where, but it was definitely in my top 10. What a track.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:06 (six years ago) link

i only voted for one of the top five so that's my guess for no. 1

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 May 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

Rooting for chaka obv

I did not expect any Bad tracks to show up in these results, and I was not disappointed by their absence.
