insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.) at 10:57 15 May 17Genuinely shocked by that placement. But not disappointed. Not disappointed either, "Purple Rain" is easily his worst single of the eighties. Boring, generic hair metal ballad thar goes on for too long. All of Prince's ballads up to and including this were bland, but he would get much better at writing them for the next two albums. "Condition of the Heart" is great, and "Sometimes it Snows in April" is sublime, one of his 10 best songs. "Purple Rain" is so meh compared to those.

And "Do Me, Baby" is the absolute opposite of bland.

"one more try" a masterpiece ofc
xxp:I've been roaming through the 80s Billboard R&B charts, and a lot of things that don't code as R&B to my ears are in there (Human League, New Order's "Confusion", Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free", etc.). "Borderline", however, is conspicuously missing.
― Sanpaku, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link
I'd bet 'Human' will definitely place, prime Jam & Lewis. Think we can relax about New Order and Sting appearing.
― Dan Worsley, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link
Purple Rain is an ordinary song with an inane lyric sold by a great vocal performance. I'm still annoyed that in death it's become his signature song.

"One More Try" and "I Can't Go For That" the only two white #1s on the '80s R&B chart.

Purple Rain is magnificent. You're all mental.
(It was my no.1; I couldn't vote for it and not have it no.1. I've never felt so JUDGED, though I am very glad it ended up so low.)

"human" and "all around the world" both scaled the r&b charts before the pop charts fyi (altho the former ended up peaking higher on the pop charts)

― meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:37 (six years ago) link
well, I didn't mention those because they came after "Purple Rain" and, according to Tuomas's timeline, Prince didn't figure out how to write a ballad until "Condition of the Heart"

Which, maybe I need to listen to that one again, but odds that it bests "The Beautiful Ones" are ... well, let's just say it doesn't best "The Beautiful Ones."

Voted Human and This is the Right Time and expect to see them still. Nasty Girl, Moments in Love and Music and Lights got my vote as well and are the only truly great songs placing today imo. One More Try, Purple Rain, 1999, Just the Two Of Us and PYT are sort of whatever at this point way more than Ghostbusters.
Random thought: I find the lyric and the delivery of "I'm asking you what you know about these things" on How Will I Know kind of haunting. Is that universal?
― gospodin simmel, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link
I don't really count "Beautiful Ones" as a ballad, but sure, I'll give you that, it's awesome, way better than "Purple Rain". "International Lover" and "Do Me Baby" tho are the dullest songs on their respective albums, and "Free" isn't much better. They're all very much paint-by-numbers when it comes to ballad songwriting, maybe elevated a bit by idiosyncrasies in Prince's performance, but still way less unique and sublime than the best ballads he wrote later.

1999 was the second highest rated Prince song on my ballot after Controversy. I love the three different voices in the verse coming together on the fourth line.
