Just need George Michael to appear next and we'll have the set of top 80s solo stars.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:04 (six years ago) link

lol well we already know he's the #76 :P

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link

A+ ... this is the kind of downtempo I'm 100 percent down with.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.) at 10:57 15 May 17

Genuinely shocked by that placement. But not disappointed.

Not disappointed either, "Purple Rain" is easily his worst single of the eighties. Boring, generic hair metal ballad thar goes on for too long. All of Prince's ballads up to and including this were bland, but he would get much better at writing them for the next two albums. "Condition of the Heart" is great, and "Sometimes it Snows in April" is sublime, one of his 10 best songs. "Purple Rain" is so meh compared to those.

Tuomas, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link

Hey now. That's not what I meant at all.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link

And "Do Me, Baby" is the absolute opposite of bland.

i'll say that "all around the world" is neither too low nor too high. solid #77

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link

"one more try" a masterpiece ofc

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link

xxp:
I've been roaming through the 80s Billboard R&B charts, and a lot of things that don't code as R&B to my ears are in there (Human League, New Order's "Confusion", Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free", etc.). "Borderline", however, is conspicuously missing.

Sanpaku, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:17 (six years ago) link

I'd bet 'Human' will definitely place, prime Jam & Lewis. Think we can relax about New Order and Sting appearing.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

Purple Rain is an ordinary song with an inane lyric sold by a great vocal performance. I'm still annoyed that in death it's become his signature song.

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

"One More Try" and "I Can't Go For That" the only two white #1s on the '80s R&B chart.

The Stansfield single I voted for is "This is the Right Time."

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

And both deserving of top 100 placings in this poll, imo

xp

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:23 (six years ago) link

"You Can't Deny It" I would've allowed.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:23 (six years ago) link

Purple Rain is magnificent. You're all mental.

(It was my no.1; I couldn't vote for it and not have it no.1. I've never felt so JUDGED, though I am very glad it ended up so low.)

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:23 (six years ago) link

xp and "Change."

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:23 (six years ago) link

"human" and "all around the world" both scaled the r&b charts before the pop charts fyi (altho the former ended up peaking higher on the pop charts)

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:25 (six years ago) link

One thing the world needed right now was for "Purple Rain" to be taken down a peg or two.

not to mention adore and um...the ballad of dorothy parker

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:37 (six years ago) link

well, I didn't mention those because they came after "Purple Rain" and, according to Tuomas's timeline, Prince didn't figure out how to write a ballad until "Condition of the Heart"

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

Which, maybe I need to listen to that one again, but odds that it bests "The Beautiful Ones" are ... well, let's just say it doesn't best "The Beautiful Ones."

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 15 May 2017 20:40 (six years ago) link

I mean, I do like "Condition of the Heart" a lot but a good chunk of what makes it good was stuff he'd already done... in "The Beautiful Ones"

ah yes, i missed that somehow, but the beautiful ones is spectacularly great so he's wrong

did anyone cobble together a spotify playlist of these results? I didn't vote because of lack of time/lack of era expertise, but i'd love to check out all the resutls.

Moodles, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link

Voted Human and This is the Right Time and expect to see them still. Nasty Girl, Moments in Love and Music and Lights got my vote as well and are the only truly great songs placing today imo. One More Try, Purple Rain, 1999, Just the Two Of Us and PYT are sort of whatever at this point way more than Ghostbusters.

Random thought: I find the lyric and the delivery of "I'm asking you what you know about these things" on How Will I Know kind of haunting. Is that universal?

gospodin simmel, Monday, 15 May 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

I don't really count "Beautiful Ones" as a ballad, but sure, I'll give you that, it's awesome, way better than "Purple Rain". "International Lover" and "Do Me Baby" tho are the dullest songs on their respective albums, and "Free" isn't much better. They're all very much paint-by-numbers when it comes to ballad songwriting, maybe elevated a bit by idiosyncrasies in Prince's performance, but still way less unique and sublime than the best ballads he wrote later.

it was only after he passed that it occurred to me how similar the verses of Radiohead's Let Down are to those of Purple Rain.

"1999" is definitely my pick for Most Overrated Prince Single but still, heresy

dyl, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link

1999 was the second highest rated Prince song on my ballot after Controversy. I love the three different voices in the verse coming together on the fourth line.

I'm so glad to see all the repping for "The Beautiful Ones". I was afraid it might not show up, but...of course it'll show up, duh.

I'm genuinely glad to see there's still stuff in the top 100 that I don't know.
