jesus god

yeah, the only thing wrong with snyder's watchmen was that it wasn't long enough

I rewatched Suicide Squad on hbo and it wasn't as bad as I remembered

Jared Leto's Joker is still horrible though

mh, Monday, 15 May 2017 15:14 (six years ago) link

it is with great regret i must announce that mh's most recent post itt has made me break the glass on the 'flag post' emergency button i keep on my desk

I think you misunderstand how bad I remember it being

mh, Monday, 15 May 2017 15:24 (six years ago) link

i can brook no praise, no matter how backhanded, for suicide squad

a man must have his principles

the snyderverse is anti-principles

mh, Monday, 15 May 2017 15:32 (six years ago) link

In Jack Kirby's Fourth World setting, the Snyderverse is a formula for total control over the minds of sentient beings, that is sought by Darkseid . . . The Snyderverse has been defined in different ways, but a common interpretation is that it is a mathematical proof of the futility of living.

I believe the Johnsverse is often employed in a similar fashion.

It's ironic (doncha think?) how Moore originally wanted to use the Charlton characters for "Watchmen," and DC was all, "No, please use analogues; we don't want you doing this crazy sh*t with our beloved third-tier acquired characters"... and now, 30 years later, they're jacking up the Watchmen crew in their cray-cray mainstream continuity.

(which is odd because he was a consultant on the Snyder film and Before Watchmen)

given his artfully-phrased slagging of Before Watchmen, and everything else about the Nelson era, it doesn't seem odd at all

Could give a rats ass for DC continuity these days but they're publishing the Young Animals line which is damn good. Also Tom King's Batman and Bane stories are as good as Batman's been in a while.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 01:48 (six years ago) link

The first issue of Bug (as done by the Allred clan) is pretty darn good... lots of Kirby genuflection and fun times. Brute and Glob!

Yeah, enjoyed Bug! a lot.

Batman, ASBatman, Superman, WW, Super Sons, Teen Titans (the Damian Wayne one) are all worth reading imo.

The Young Animal line is great apart from Mother Panic, which I can't get to grips with.

Flintstones still the best book on the DC roster, although all the Hanna Barbera/DC Annuals crossovers were surprisingly readable in either the main or backup feature.

I quite liked both Unfollow and Clean Room, and Sheriff of Babylon was great. In fact, I'm tempted to say the Vertigo output over the past year or two is as good as it's ever been.

Flintstones still the best book on the DC roster

sentences which are true but nonetheless you never thought you'd read

Cave Carson started really well, then... devolved. Worth checking out though.

FYI, there's a DC Super Hero Girls book titled "Finals Crisis" (*thumb's up emoji*)

Along the same lines -- one of those Lego Justice League DVD movies ("Attack of the Legion of Doom") has a joke involving a gov't alien research lab called "Area 52"... Someone says, "I thought it was 'Area 51'," and the reply is, "No, that was destroyed... this is the New 52."

(Friday afternoon ephemera, y'all)

In this week's GIANT EDITORIAL FUCKUPS:

Lois gets her leg cut off on Superman, and Supes cauterises the stump so she doesn't bleed to death even though they both know that rules out reattachment (in fact it's weirder than that, he breaks off from the fight after he cauterises her to take her to hospital. Dude, if you'd done that at super-speed before you burnt it...). It's actually quite well done, apart from the obvious Mahnke content. But what's that, Skippy? Action Comics explicitly takes place later in continuity than Superman and Lois is still bipedal?

Also DC have finally dealt with having two Dicks. As you might have expected, they've made a complete pig's ear of it. White Wally has turned up in Nightwang's own book in an adventure Nightwang describes as their first since White Wally came back. Which means either the Titans book doesn't exist, or takes place after this issue of Nightwang. And then in Teen Titans, the Black Wally/White Wally storyline gets advanced by the Dick there ignoring the events of Nightwang completely. And the introduction of a second Deathstroke, maybe.

The rumours of the Doomsday Clock 'real' villain give me the total fear. But are completely believable of GJ.

What are those rumours then? Who is it?

spoil away, aldo, i don't think any of us give enough of a fuck to worry about it

we can add one-legged lois to the ever-growing roster of dismembered dc comics characters, i guess

Superboy Prime, the universe puncher from Infinite Crisis.

Since nobody else has read the Flash/Batman 'Button' crossover, the final 2 pages of the last part are 1) a blue hand picks up the Rorschach badge while the "perception of time" speech between Laurie and Doc Manhattan is recited and 2) the badge resolves out to be part of the Superman shield. There appears to be fairly strong analysis of the design indicating exactly which Superman's it is, none of which are the Action/Superman/Trinity/JL Supes.

Other circumstantial hints are that the one "pulling the strings" has erased 10 years of continuity, with the Rebirth event marking 10 years since Superboy Punched The Universe, and that in Legion Of Three Worlds and Adventure Comics it's made clear that Superboy Prime is in his parent's basement on a paradoxical Earth Prime reading the comics that describe the rest of the DCU so he might be the only person in the DCU aware that Watchmen is a comic that co-exists with Superman comics (even the Psycho-Pirate doesn't).

It can't go well.

Oh, and the other news from Flash is that Hypertime is in continuity again.

Mud... Jam... Failure... (aldo), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 10:33 (six years ago) link

they're really taking the long way round to writing an in-continuity batman/rorschach teamup huh

🎵 it's grey pubic now, stoner blue 🎵 (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 10:34 (six years ago) link

Actually Hypertime goes a long way to explaining Why Superman, and also Why Titans and Why Green Arrow.

But not Why aldo? Nothing explains that.

Mud... Jam... Failure... (aldo), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 10:39 (six years ago) link

after exasperatedly bringing up the concept of hypertime so much in this thread i feel somehow guilty that this is what they're using it for

be careful what you wish for i guess

you're reading the way geoff johns is writing by the looks of it

sadly

Wait, who's the SECOND dick?

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

He's Dick as well. Nightwang is Dick and Titans Nightwing is Dick. They have different costumes and everything.

Mud... Jam... Failure... (aldo), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

Juggling multiple Dicks is hard.

human/hutt hybrid (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

Are they literally different dicks, or are they they same dick, but no one bothered checking with each other?

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:45 (six years ago) link

take it to tmi guys

I think they're supposed to be the same Dick but they're clearly not because they're dressed differently (eg one has a little cape). Dick looks different when he's older.

Mud... Jam... Failure... (aldo), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

I just want to make it clear that I'm clear on the distinction between discussing multiple instances of the character Dick Grayson and discussing male genitalia. Clearly, there's a vas deferens.

four weeks pass...

at an unprecedented moment of good will for the wonder woman character, the bigwigs at DC decide to cash in with a groundbreaking special sure to please new fans and win them over into becoming ongoing comic buyers
